Kitten attacking feet

Hi. What age did your kitten stop attacking feet under the duvet or do they never grow out of this? I’d love to get my kitten out the bathroom where he has to sleep at night but really hate having my feet attacked and also my duvet shredded.

He's just being a cat learning how to hunt. If you are able to have one, I'd get a 2nd kitten. One of my cats was doing the feet under a duvet attack throughout her life - thats a long time to get stuck in a bathroom!

A question asked politely.... have you not had a cat before? This playfulness is a natural progression for a born hunter. I would honestly get a playmate for him to bond with so they can "cat" together.

Photo of the beast is mandatory!

I’ve only had one cat that did this and I’ve had 8 cats over the years. He doesn’t do it anymore. Lasted about 4 months

EmpressaurusKitty · 26/06/2026 08:29

My 7-year-old still goes for my feet in bed occasionally. I got her 2 years ago as a rescue.

I sleep in socks most of the time but she does do it much less nowadays.

Yes I had a cat when I was a child but he would have been a few years old when I was born, he was very attached to me and slept at the end my bed every night and never once bit my feet. I have not had a kitten before though so I’m hoping he chills out a little. I’m not going to risk getting another one in case they don’t get along and we end up having twice the destruction.

One of mine is almost 3 years old and still hides behind my curtains every night to ambush me. She actually just roused herself from melting on the floor to attack my feet as I walked past just now, but it was half hearted

Purpleandping · 26/06/2026 08:50

The first time I stayed with DP he warned me the cat would go for my feet in the morning, which is why he wears socks in bed 🤣 The cat is 13yo

We have a 15 year old cat who sleeps on the bed and is very bitey in the morning of anything exposed 😲 ...
So to answer your question OP - never

Elbowpatch · 26/06/2026 08:59

About 22, if I remember correctly.

BillieWiper · 26/06/2026 09:00

Not all kittens do it, some never grow out of it!

My little one still adores feet, and loves licking them and rubbing them on his face, but not 'attacking'. He stopped that at about 9 months I think. He's now 6.

Oh dear, we may be in for the long run then, unless he figures out that he’ll only get out the bathroom if he quits the biting .I wouldn’t mind so much if it was just in the morning that he did the biting but it’s all
night long - like I need to sleep 😆

Why the bathroom though? Can he not have the living room or even the hallway?

MrTiddlesTheCat · 26/06/2026 09:08

This is what water pistols were invented for.

Not really at the moment due to our house layout and that I have to keep my toddlers door open. The bathroom is fairly large. We are looking at options for a gate for the living area but it’s just trying to find one that will work and that he can’t get over.

I'm not sure a cat proof gate exists?

No your right, might have to be an actual door.

One of mine is 13 and still attacks my feet under the duvet. He also likes to "help" to make the bed by burrowing then rolling the duvet into a big ball.

Luckily the rest gave up that sort of behaviour at around a couple of years old!

lordbaddingham · 26/06/2026 18:45

My 14 year old cat still does this

BatsInHibernation · 26/06/2026 22:07

I can't go in my garden without my tortoise sneaking up on me and biting me heels or my toes. When he successfully gets me it is shocking and painful in equal measure. I know this is not helpful, just sharing in solidarity 😸🐢
He is nearly 60

Bitzee · 26/06/2026 22:10

Don’t stick just your feet out of the covers. Mine don’t go for toes when they can clearly see that they’re attached to a person, nor when they’re fully under the covers. It’s seeing a random foot that in their eyes doesn’t look like it’s connected to anything because the duvet is covering the rest of the leg that gets them thinking it’s a prey that must be killed.

GlobalTravellerbutespeciallyBognor · 26/06/2026 22:14

We were advised to get two young cats on the basis that they would learn by playing. The idea was that biffing each other would show them that it was a bad idea to do it to anyone, including their owners.

Sorry but did I get that correctly - you are hunted down by your tortoise??

Yes. He will be free ranging in the garden , hiding in the bushes etc. I will go out and do a bit of pottering. Next thing, aaarrrggghhhhhh bloody tortoise is there at my feet about to chomp.
He bit my heel the other day and I jumped out of my skin.

Oh my godfathers, sorry as it sounds painful but being chased around by a geriatric tortoise really needs to be a question on ‘Would I lie to you?’

ohreallyIsee · 26/06/2026 23:34

Ours is eight and will chase dd2 up the stairs batting at her feet, he gets a devil look in his eyes and stalks her slowly out of the sitting room waiting for to go up the stairs😁

Bambalama · 26/06/2026 23:41

DCat is an old guy now, but a seasoned attacker. He attacked us from all angles until he was 3, when he finally calmed down, but he still attacks our feet if we let him in the bedroom when we are in bed. So we keep him downstairs (or outside if he wants) at night!! Wee shite😆
