its been 30 degrees here everyday. I cannot get our old boy to come in??? He’s either basking on the trampoline or under a bush in the garden. I’m worried he’s going to get poorly! Is this normal?? He hasn’t done this in hot weather before he just seems to prefer being outside.

My black cat is the same he just lays in the window cooking himself all day. I close the blinds and he wedges himself behind it..!

Noodleschicken · 25/06/2026 21:09

Just make sure he is hydrated - wet pouches instead of biscuits - pour extra water in the pouches food

Fiftyandnotsonifty · 25/06/2026 21:10

I’ve got indoor cats, one will enjoy the fan, the other will seek the hottest place to cook like the windowsill for example, I despair. Just make sure access to lots of bowls of water. I’ve also been getting the cat soups to make sure getting some fluids.

500mileslong · 25/06/2026 21:16

M boy is the same, he’s only just come inside and had some food and fussing. I figure he’s coolest in the bushes, I just make sure he has fresh water and food.

catslovehairties · 25/06/2026 21:25

Yeah, mine has been the same - he has no appetite either, silly bear.

Specialneedsnightmare · 25/06/2026 21:54

Mine has been out most of the day which isn't her normal. She was in the shade so I took a bowl of water out to her and left her to it.

Becuriousnotjudgemental1980 · 25/06/2026 22:38

Ok I feel better now! He’s got access to water inside and outside. He just seems to want to be outside! I can see him now he’s fast asleep on the trampoline! I kinda wish I could sleep outside to be fair!

We’re in Scotland so don’t get the same heat, but our last cat loved being out in hot weather and would just sprawl out asleep in the borders all day. You could tell the time of day by where she was, because she moved round the garden with the sun. She was pure white so needed sunscreen on her ears before going out - no SPF, no party.

Sunshineandrainbow · 26/06/2026 00:16

Oh yes he will be absolutely fine, my old cat loved the trampoline for sleeping on..
My cat is out all day and night. I have just put a cardboard box in the garden in case he does want a more comfortable sleep but he likes the chairs too.

PashaMinaMio · 26/06/2026 07:46

Historically cats are desert animals, as loved by the ancient Egyptians and found mummified in tombs.
That’s probably why they’re loving the heat. It’s in their genes.

Previous texts suggest everyone is keeping a watchful eye on their cats and would soon know if anything was wrong or out of character and needed intervention.

We’ve had a massive thunderstorm this morning so he’s hiding under my bed currently but I’m sure he’ll be back out later! Thank you everyone.

During last year's heatwave I curfewed my mostly black longhair because she was one and her adult brain hadn't fully installed. But she's much more sensible this year, keeping to the shade and confining zoomies to early morning, so I'm mostly letting her do her thing and just keeping an eye out.

Iheartmysmart · 26/06/2026 09:08

My indoor cat is refusing to sit anywhere near any of the fans that are on, despite them being near her usual favourite places. She also gave me a filthy look when I served up a frozen lick-e-lix. There's fresh water down and plenty of shade so I’m going to leave her to it.

iloveeverykindofcat · 26/06/2026 09:11

My senior is an Abyssinian cross, and when she was young, there was no temperature in this country too hot for her. She used to lie on radiators (despite my best attempts to stop her). Now she's close to 16 she's moderated herself though and avoids the hottest temperatures. I think once they get past adolescence they're quite good at self regulating.

AltitudeCheck · 26/06/2026 09:12

My boy gets a bit of frozen lick-e-lix (ice lolly for cats!) and flops on the tiled floors with a big sigh... he's not enjoying the heat.

Girl cat is a sun worshipper... she's been nicknamed Madge (from Benidorm) as she's a feisty older lady too!

Shedmistress · 26/06/2026 09:16

Its been 43°c here and about 28°c at night here for over a week, and I have 6 cats here, 2 of which usually spend time indoors but even they refuse to come inside.

They are getting the terrace hosed down several times a day, a little water mixed into their wet food, more wet food when they come to the door to ask for it, ice packs being left on their beds which they completely ignore.

If they are panting they get wet food and some wet hand strokes to cool their heads but what they really need is damp shade so I hose down shady areas so they can lie on the grass or cooler tiled terrace to cool down.

TheGriffle · 26/06/2026 09:50

My 3 year old cat has moved under the bushes permanently it seems. He only appears indoors a couple of times a day for a fuss. My 17 year old is in his usual spot on DD’s bed despite the heat (all her windows and blinds are closed though) and only occasionally wanders outside to sit on the front step and protest by loudly meowing that he is too hot.

catslovehairties · 26/06/2026 10:16

It’s still roasting here (31 degrees already) but mine ate this morning - one is currently flopped on the kitchen counters and the other has found a shady patch in the garden and is happily snoozing away.

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 26/06/2026 10:44

Just remember that a cat will never make its self uncomfortable. I feel very sorry for my friends cat today. She has a very thick coat and her groomer has cancelled because of the heat. (Friends house is a cool Victorian house)

Hm, not sure I agree with that - I know of several cats who have baked themselves to the point of heatstroke in the past.

Definitely keep a close eye on them. A couple of days ago when I went to check how my old man cat,19 next week had started panting. We flew into action damp towel. 2 fans ice blocks around him so the fans blew the cooler air on him luckily he was back to normal in a couple of minutes. It was such a worrying experience. Never happened before.

Mamma22cats · 26/06/2026 11:29

My Mango came home panting last night, she's really struggling, she's been checked over by the vet and she's medically fine but it's so stressful seeing her struggling for breath. I've been advised to keep her in today but it's stressing her out hopefully she'll settle down and go to sleep like her sister who's been flaked out the last few days.

Here they are in cooler days

Our Siamese has spent the last few days either in bed under a duvet or in the conservatory in her tent , she only bothers to go out in her catio in the evening . Mad animal .

Becuriousnotjudgemental1980 · 26/06/2026 12:16

He’s come out from under the bed and is now back under the wet bush! To be fair it’s boiling hot again and being under a wet bush is probably quite nice and cool.

My 17 year old boy has been trying to roast himself alive in my conservatory, which is at least where the temp in literally in the 40s. I've taken him out twice and he begs to go back after half an hour. I'm not letting him in there again, it can't be good for him!
