Should I get a kitten?

Fear I may have a captive audience but… shall I? Lost my elderly girl 18 months ago and said no more (always had cats for decades).

Friend of a friend has had four accidental kittens. Three of which are gingers and I’ve had every other colour but always fancied a ginger boy.

Head says no. Talk me into it…?

Why the question! A big fat ginger boy will be your best friend! Cats are just such great company! We did a quick turnaround when our family cat passed away, the house felt so empty!
kindof wish I got a pair tbh, just such funny creatures!

Cally62 · 14/05/2026 19:36

Oh wow....Just go for it.

I second @nzeire and would urge you to get two.

Much more fun and company for each other.

I have 2 indoor cats.

"Should I get a kitten?'

No.. get two 😍 .... and post plenty of pictures here so we can coo over them!

What colour/ sexes are they all? We'll help you pick!

Ginger boys are the BEST! Mine is huge, shouty, in love with DH and completely daft! He has to be the centre of attention at all times, except when he falls
off things (often) when we must all pretend we didn’t notice instead of fall about laughing! He is a BIG character and we love him!

unsevered67 · 14/05/2026 19:42

I lost my 2 around 2 years ago and decided for various reasons ( mainly about being retired and wanting to be able to be very spontaneous about travelling) to not get another one. But I wouldn’t be able to resist a ginger boy in these circumstances. They seem like amazing cats

Bluehels · 14/05/2026 19:50

Yes! I said no more. And now ive ended up with 4 more😂😂

Rozendantz · 14/05/2026 19:50

My ginger boy is lying on my legs while I'm typing. He's the sweetest, soppiest, most manipulative thing I've ever encountered, who clings to me like a limpet and follows me everywhere.

Definitely get one. Or two. Possibly three...

Twoshoesnewshoes · 14/05/2026 19:54

Yes of course
it’s not even a question

Fleetheart · 14/05/2026 19:55

Why on earth wouldn’t you? Or if you’re worried about the work get an older kitty. We got two from Cats Protection and were delighted with them for around 15 years

lottlecat · 14/05/2026 20:01

Yes! Kittens are great fun, watching them learn and grow is amazing too!

Onlythesaneones · 14/05/2026 20:02

I have an old girl and always said she'd be my last. BUT I've always hankered after a ginger boy. I work with cats and ginger boys are special 😻
You know you want to OP

Get 2 😸

isthisshit · 14/05/2026 20:39

I’ve had rescues and a couple of accidental kittens over the years. Had to have my last girl pts at 17 about 18 months ago. Have been casually looking at rescues near me but I have a (13 yr old) dog and haven’t seen anything suitable or without significant health/vet demands (which my dog has so not sure would proactively chose that at the moment in a cat am afraid).

Main concerns are:
My dog is 13, was fine with my last cat (had always been with her and cat was the boss of course) but he doesn’t “like” cats outside… I think I can manage introductions/ keep separate/ slow etc as have had to do it with previous dogs that didn’t like “non resident” cats and it always worked out in the end. But it could be really stressful and take some time?

Other doubt is that I am away every other weekend for a night or two at the moment. I have two older teens (19 and 16) who I am about to start to trust in the house (the dog wouldn’t be there with them without me)… so am sure between them they can feed, clean etc. Also have a pal that’s just said she’d help out so…

Funny a few mentioned getting two. I would love that. Have had two cats often throughout life. That would be fun but could drive the dog to despair?!

They don’t know the sex yet. My friend is having the one non ginger (tabby). I’m assuming the three gingers are more likely (but not 100%) boys. Have had white, black, tortie, tabby, black and white cats over the years. One was ginger and white, but always loved a big soppy ginger boy!

There is another thread here at the moment about someone with one kitten who is struggling to keep it entertained.
Your risk is that a single kitten will torment your elderly dog.
My advice is just to get all three. 🐈🐈🐈. Endless entertainment for each other and for you.
Random kitten picture of our last two as kittens (they are now 8yo).

Should I get a kitten?
MyGhastIsFlabbered · 15/05/2026 07:02

Is this even a dilemma? You definitely should get 2. What could be more lovely? I imagine 2 would interact more with each other than your dog.

JeremiaBoogle · 15/05/2026 07:32

Just want to say that ginger boys tend to grown into huge cats who are idiots. So clearly the answer to your question is you have to get one.

Plus under the 2026 amendments to the Cat Distribution System Act 2022, accidental kittens of a friend of a friend are now part of the CDS. So you must accept this isn't even a decision, it's already happened.

hehe… that sounds like a more reasonable law than most to be fair. Sigh.

No, you absolutely should not get a kitten.

You need at least two kittens!😻

Awww. Three could be pushing it! I did wonder about two being better for the dog. Would they defo stay pals throughout life if two boys (would obvs get them, ahem, sorted). Never had siblings together only random waifs, strays and accidentals who themselves had had varying relationships with each other (to be diplomatic!)

We've always got pairs of kittens (except the one time we did get three 😁).

Occasionally they end up being properly bonded as adults - but even when not they've always ended up rubbing along happily.
