Struggling tonight after our cat was killed by a speeding driver

My cat was run over today by a woman driving too fast in a 20mph zone. He was so beautiful and so loved and I am just brokenhearted. My little boy is inconsolable and our gorgeous furry boy left behind his little brother who will miss him terribly. I don't really know why I'm posting... I was able to hold it together for my son but now he's in bed I just can't stop crying.

I’m so sorry OP, what a terrible shock. A pet getting killed is really traumatic. I had a lovely cat run over years ago and it was very distressing to lose him in such a brutal way.

Sorry to hear that, it happened to us last year, had her 11 Years, it’s devastating.

purpleme12 · 27/04/2026 22:46

I am so sorry 😓😓😓😓😓

You must be so sad

So sorry @thesadcatladyit is devastating when they go and to lose him like that must be doubly shocking. I don’t know how old your DS is but if he’s young there’s a Mog book for children on dealing with grief. I can’t recall the title but I’m sure that a wise Mumsnetter will be able to help.

Sending love to you all ❤️🫂

It's called Goodbye Mog.

Pudmyboy · 27/04/2026 23:18

So sorry, @thesadcatlady your grief is palpable, it is so obvious you love him. What a terrible, sad day. Sending hugs and a handhold. Please share anything about him that you want to, we would love to see him in his prime if you want to share a picture. 💐💐💐

thesadcatlady · 28/04/2026 05:54

Thank you all so much for your kindness, it has helped more than you know. Most people around here love dogs but struggle to understand the absolute love for a cat.
I've managed a few hours sleep cuddling my other little cat, but up early to try and pull myself together before my DS wakes up. Here is my beautiful beautiful boy, he was just glorious. Looking at his little face has set me off again, but he was just so brilliant. 💔

What a handsome boy, and what a lovely expression, I reckon he loved you back too💐

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/04/2026 11:03

What a handsome cat - I am so sorry for your loss, @thesadcatlady. They wind their paws round our hearts, don’t they.

I am sending you, your son and your lovely cat’s brother a massive hug.

Introvertedbuthappy · 28/04/2026 11:37

What a beautiful boy. I’m so so sorry for your loss. He was clearly so loved. I’m so sorry 😔

HatStickBoots · 28/04/2026 19:59

So dreadfully sorry for your loss 💔😞 I fully sympathise with you and your family. It’s devastating. He truly was a beautiful little cat. Heartbreaking. It’s so nice to know how much he was loved and how he loved you too. {{{handhold}}}

JaceLancs · 28/04/2026 22:42

I’m so sorry to hear this - it’s devastating when we lose a much loved pet
My comfort is in knowing we gave them a fabulous life and loving home and the freedom to cat about even though it brings risks
I hope in time it will feel less raw and you will welcome another Dcat into your life

He is a beautiful boy. I lost my beautiful tabby boy who was 1 year and nearly 10 months old. He too was run over and left on the road. Another driver found him and took him to their vets, who also happened to be mine. They rang me and it floored me. I am angry, devastated and heart broken. this was yesterday 30 April he was killed between 10.30-10.50 am not long after leaving the house.
He has a brother so trying not to cry in front of him. As he is already looking and calling his brother.
i wish I wish I had done this and that. Making them a house cat only, or with a catio type safe garden.
they seem to be less common in the UK.
i actually feeling like I don't want to live, but I have to as I have his brother who I also deeply love. He is more of a homely cat and does not venture more than a garden or two. Just hangs in ours or inside next to me as I WFH.
I feel your loss and was crying reading your post. I have had a dog and cats over the last 35 years and each time it takes a piece of me. But this horror show was avoidable.
I can confirm time will make it easier but you never forget. I hope I too get there.
We went to the vets as soon as they rang so we could kiss him and hold him for the very last time. Why did I not just make him a house cat. He was the most adventure cat I ever had. He was castrated but still liked to go round and visit all his cat friends. He stayed in at night. As I thought it was safer for them

Mylifeofcats101 · 01/05/2026 12:40

Also sorry for your loss from one cat mother to another, sending virtual hugs.

I am so very sorry for your loss too. The crying seems endless and your post has broken my heart. I am so very sorry. I am spending my days alternating between rage and wishing that had I done things differently. They are so loved and so precious and there seems to be nowhere for this grief to go, but I am trying to just go a day at a time.
All of these comments have helped me so much, because people in real life seem to already think I should have moved on already and I just feel so lost.

Thank you all so much, and virtual hugs to all who have lost precious cats.
