Struggling tonight after our cat was killed by a speeding driver

My cat was run over today by a woman driving too fast in a 20mph zone. He was so beautiful and so loved and I am just brokenhearted. My little boy is inconsolable and our gorgeous furry boy left behind his little brother who will miss him terribly. I don't really know why I'm posting... I was able to hold it together for my son but now he's in bed I just can't stop crying.

So sorry for your loss. For such little creatures they have such huge impacts on our lives. To be taken that way is so cruel as well.

I'm sorry OP, how awful. I cried all day when our little cat was killed and it took about a week before I stopped crying several times a day. Let yourself cry 💔

Thank you all so much, I just can't believe it happened. I was so eerily calm when everyone stopped at the roadside to see what had happened and I've just dissolved this evening.

He was a 4 year old little adventurer, the most beautiful ginger tabby who looked after his little brother and ran upstairs to lick my toes every morning when the kitchen door was opened... and his purr was so noisy it sounded like a jet engine.

His brother came to see his body and started trying to groom him and I felt as if I might break in two. When I told my son he cried harder than I've ever seen before and I couldn't fix it. It makes me wonder why we have pets but he made us all so happy.

He sounds like a really really special cat. It’s clear he was much loved and had a wonderful life with you. Four is far too young to lose them isn’t it. One day you will remember him and smile. For now be gentle on yourself. It’s so hard. We lost a 5 year old dog last year very suddenly. Someone said to me that grief is the price we pay for love. But my goodness it hurts.

I'm so very sorry. It's absolutely heartbreaking to lose a beloved pet, no matter how it happens it's always so so sad. Be kind to yourself, allow the tears to flow.

It sounds like you gave your kitty a life full of happiness and love.

I am so sorry, and for him to be taken so young is really sad. Every pet brings love into our life, and as long as you remember him that love is still with you.

Oh OP, I'm so sorry. (I remember when my little girl cat was killed on the road - at one point when driving in the days after, I had to pull into a layby and just howl.) RTCs are such a violent and shocking death for our loved animals. Your boy sounds like he was adorable, and adored. Hold onto that - it will get easier.

Your other cat may well be OK, having been able to see and sniff his brother's body.

So sorry @thesadcatladyit is devastating when they go and to lose him like that must be doubly shocking. I don’t know how old your DS is but if he’s young there’s a Mog book for children on dealing with grief. I can’t recall the title but I’m sure that a wise Mumsnetter will be able to help.

That’s so sad :( How horrible for you all. I hope the driver stopped, it’s our worst nightmare for our gorgeous sibling pair. You gave your boy a lovely life with love and kindness xxx

I am so so sorry. My cat passed away a few years ago (very quick illness so a massive shock) and I was truly devastated. The grief was so difficult especially as she was my only pet so the house felt empty.

the only quote that helped me was the “how lucky am I to have had something that makes saying goodbye so hard”. May or may not help you but was a comfort to me.

Only time will help heal but sending solidarity at this difficult time.
