Can anyone recommend anything that’ll allow my French doors to open, but not allow the cats out?

We have indoor cats and I miss being able to have the patio doors open in the warmer weather. All the devices I can find are designed to keep dogs in and let cats out which is not what I’m after!

I have the dog version of that catg8 (actually bought to keep the chickens out) and it is brilliant- really easy to use and to take off and store in the winter

Would it stop humans just walking in

not determined burglars, just young teen chancers?

Maybe train your cats to come back in if they do go out? My cats only go in the garden and come in as soon as I shake the dreamies tub!!

A Blind fitting company in my area, have fly screens. They install them at your door or windows and then you can open the door to let the air in and flies etc out. Presumably your cats too!

HotRootsAndNaughtyToots · 06/03/2026 11:33

How determined are they? Because if not very then a magnetic fly screen is probably the cheapest option

They’re always jumping up at the glass trying to swat at flies that are outside, it’d take them about 10 seconds to find out they can get through a magnetic one. They don’t let the ordinary curtains get in their way at all either, even when they’re tucked right being the radiator. Oh and one of them has thumbs so he’s extra dexterous.

One of them will come running if he hears the Dreamies, the other one will take them or leave them. I’d really rather not risk them going out. We have trees and one of them is right next to the fence. And a couple of houses away is the top of our street, then a busy road. I actually rescued a cat off that road the other day, she kept darting across and very nearly got smooshed so I scooped her up and took her back to her home that was a good half a mile from where I found her! There’s no hearing the Dreamies from that distance.

Wow that is incredible

Catio? A bit more expensive but probably less stressful long term. It's something I'm thinking about doing in my next house.

I’d love one but the patio that the french doors open out on to is our barbecue/outdoor dining area and there’s trees and loads of plants, there’s not really a good way of enclosing it without either destroying all our hard work or making a tiny catio that may as well just be a gate over the door.
