Can anyone recommend anything that’ll allow my French doors to open, but not allow the cats out?

We have indoor cats and I miss being able to have the patio doors open in the warmer weather. All the devices I can find are designed to keep dogs in and let cats out which is not what I’m after!

Some sort of netting? But cats are master escapologists when they want to be, so it's going to need to be robust.

Custom sized Flat Cats might do the job? I have them on all my upstairs windows, have been going strong for 10+ years and I have two chonky (5.5 and 6kg) fluff balls who do have outside access from downstairs but would love nothing more than to bounce out of the window onto conservatory roof given half a chance 🤣 it's velcro and netting but made by a guy who couldn't find any commercially available materials which actually kept his cats in and was strong enough to withstand their claws.

Edit for typos!

MushMonster · 01/03/2026 13:13

Shutters like these?
Or netting. But cats could start climbing all over the netting and eventually break it

Put then in another room whole the doors are open? Just a thought.

RandomMess · 01/03/2026 13:14

I too can recommend Flatcats. Indestructible when in place. However when folded up stored away one of the fluffs nibbled a corner!! Bastweed Cat.

Too tricky, I like the doors open all day and they’re fast and slippery little bastards when they REALLY want to be through a door, you only have to crack it and they’re shoving their way in at the speed of a cat needing to be somewhere they aren’t wanted 🤣

Cats will climb netting.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 01/03/2026 13:22

I thought of Flatcats but it’d be absolutely massive and I’m not sure it’d work if I only have one door open. I’d love shutters but they’re very pricey.

We fashioned a wooden frame with wire netting (covered plastic wire) that fits into the door frame when we have one door open. We’re always in the room when we do this just in case our cats try and climb it.

RandomMess · 01/03/2026 13:30

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain yes the cats climb up the flat cats but they still don’t budge.

A dpuppy? Our dcats won't pass by ours.. Even to go out!

My cats were raised in a home with a VERY rambunctious terrier. They absolutely ADORE my elderly BT and she refuses to acknowledge their existence 🤣 they’d probably be over the moon with a puppy, especially if it played with them!

I love the way they've included a picture of a cat walking away from the gate with an expression on its face as if to say, "Well I'm buggered if I can get through that."

Edit: Oops, quoted the wrong message. Was supposed to be the one with the picture (obvs).

Toddlerteaplease · 01/03/2026 15:23

Another recommendation for flat cats. You can have them
custom made. They are excellent.

Easterbunnygettingawrapping · 01/03/2026 15:37

Can I send ours your way?.. Send her back when fully trained please..

This is what we do- we can shut our large hallway and other rooms off from open plan where our French doors are, our cat is usually asleep in that end of the house anyway 😅

Determinedly denying his entire existence 😆 poor boy worships her but his love is unrequited.

We've got the front door version of this - so half height. It's very robust and well made. Not sure it would keep Marvin in if he was determined but it would slow him down - hopefully enough for us to grab him!

Puppylucky · 06/03/2026 10:33

Actually looking at the photos of the cat gate you can see the design flaw - which is you can't actually open or close the door when the gate is in place! Ours is attached to the front door so concertinas with the movement of the door.

CMOTDibbler · 06/03/2026 10:49

I have the dog version of that catg8 (actually bought to keep the chickens out) and it is brilliant- really easy to use and to take off and store in the winter

Hi just wondering if you have a link to where you got yours from?
