Cat litter boxes. Where do you put them.

Whatsnewcatpoo · 06/02/2026 14:45

I have 3 cats adopted in the last year. They have become accustomed to their indoor litter boxes but this was never the plan. Currently have 1 in the bathroom and 1 in the hallway outside the bathroom. I had a third for a while but there was no space left. Currently trying to figure out where to put them as it's awkward for guests. I live in a ground floor 2 bed flat. It is a long hallway and I have very little other rooms to put them in.
Any ideas please, or do I take the decision to make them go outside?

I have put both litter trays by the patio doors out of the way, one either side! it’s a pain having to find a place for them! I didn’t want to put mine in the bathroom as the litter is scattered all over the floor by midday and didn’t want to get it all over my feet! I’ve seen lots put them under the stairs but that’s where my boiler is and I didn’t want heat next to dirty litter. Have you got an under the stairs space?

Favouritefruits · 06/02/2026 14:52

I’ve been looking at those pieces of furniture with cat litter spaces hidden which seems like a great idea but the ones I’ve seen aren’t really to my taste but you could have a look see if you like them?

One in the kitchen under the breakfast bar. Literally nowhere else to put it.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 06/02/2026 14:53

I have a one bedroom flat and the only place is in the hallway towards the front door. Luckily the hall is quite spacious.

Not helpful as we’re in a house , I put a cat flap on the cupboard door under the stairs and popped the litter tray in there.

Thank you, the understairs is a great idea if only I get rid of all the junk in there first.
I suppose they will require a cat flap.
Googling this now, it seems some people really go all out on this. Who knew it was a thing!

Oh poor you. That really isn't ideal!

No, I’d rather have it in the bathroom but there is no space!

Great, it seems this will be a solution. I have an understairs cupboard which is very spacious. I just need to get the junk out!
How did your cat(s) react to this? Were they willing to go in?

My house cat took to pooing on the floor in the spare room, so I moved the litter tray in there. Its still there. Its now his room 🙄

What a great idea. I have been contemplating this as we are getting 2 kittens next week. At the moment I am planning to remove the dryer from the utility room as I never use it but this might be a good alternative.

CanadianJohn2 · 06/02/2026 15:55

Next to the kitchen I have a large closet I use for recycling boxes. The cat's litter is in there. Rather than put in a cat door, I made a long hook-and-eye latch which keeps the door open 6"

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/02/2026 16:13

We have three - one in the kitchen, one in the utility, and one in the hall. He’s shut in the kitchen overnight (as otherwise he’s a total pain at 5am) so no choice but to have one in there. It’s a big room and we have those spongy mats underneath to try and limit tracking.

I'd avoid the utility room if it has noisy equipment in (washers; dryers) as this will freak out the kittens and they may well refuse to use the tray in there. Also bear in mind the 'rule' - one tray per cat plus one. (This is ideal, but you certainly should have at least two trays.)

DH rebuilt the under stairs cupboard, one side has shoe racks and a small clothes rail and the other which is the low end of the stairs so not high but cats are little so it’s fine is the cats en-suite with a cat flap in the little door. The full door opens wide so has room for her litter tray to come in and out and the bag of new cat litter, plus cleaning stuff for the tray.

I’ve got a robot litter and it’s brilliant it scoops and sieves as soon as the cat leaves the machine and collects all of it in a carrier bag in a drum.

How much did it cost?

purser25 · 06/02/2026 18:11

I bet no one keeps there litter tray where we keep ours ….. under my Mums commode there was the one occasion Mother using commode cat using litter tray at the same time. Both on Lino so easy to clean

Flooph · 06/02/2026 18:16

We have tried everything! We used to have those robot cleaning cat litters as well but I felt it was expensive and still got smelly. We have now moved and the only space is one in the kitchen but in one of the hidden furniture units at the end of the central island. My old
house had the cat litter and that was ideal!

This sounds amazing!

I only have a single door going into the understairs, the rest is wall. I guess as a "cats cloakroom", this will more than suffice.

At least that's a very efficient use of space! Bless your mum sharing her commode space with the litter tray.

in the downstairs toilet.

Krakinou · 06/02/2026 20:25

If you have access to a patio or garden, why not there? Can you put a cat flap in the door?

maddiemookins16mum · 06/02/2026 20:31

We have downstairs in the Conservatory and one in the bathroom (in the bath). The bathroom one is because our rescue tortie is quite nervous and feels safe using it. By the way, we don’t use the bath, we use our ensuite shower. DH even refers to it as ‘Cat’s Bathroom’. Oure aren’t going out much at present, but come the good weather they’ll rarely use the indoor trays.
