How often do you change the tray?

Just wondering what others do. Obviously I remove any poo as soon as possible, but with wee I scoop out as much wet litter as possible and top up when necessary, then change entire tray around every 3 days. I use a cheap non clumping litter.

I'm trying to save money as well as hygiene and wondered what others do. My cat has two trays and tends to wee and poo separately, although not always.

Weekly, and i do the same as you re scooping as soon as I see it.

MsSquiz · 24/01/2026 12:41

We have 2 cats, 2 litter trays. They get emptied of poo as soon as we notice it’s there, and have a full clean out weekly

vanillaskin · 24/01/2026 12:45

I use clumping, scoop as soon as I see it
very rarely do a full clean out, I use a LOT of clumping litter so wee never touches the bottom
2 big stainless steel trays

PixeyandDixey · 24/01/2026 14:21

I use clumping as it's easy to take out the wet bits twice a day. Avoids smells, which was a problem with the non clumping, as you can't be sure of picking all the wet bits out.

It's changed once a week.

jamandcustard · 24/01/2026 14:23

Almost never. We use clumping litter and properly fill the trays.

Poo gets scooped as soon as it happens, pee gets scooped 2-3 times a day, and I top up most mornings (we have three cats who are kept in overnight).

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 24/01/2026 15:00

Thanks everyone. I might try clumping, use more and see if it lasts longer.

I use non-clumping, scoop poo out straightaway & change it weekly too.

jamandcustard · 24/01/2026 15:02

I'm surprised people still buy non-clumping litter for adult cats - it smells awful and seems pretty pointless to me, lol.

The paper litter doesnt smell awful at all.

I do my utility one out about twice a week as one of my cats basically lives in there and doesnt go out. I do the others once a week.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/01/2026 15:09

We use Catsan non-clumping. Per others, scoop poo straight away, and deep clean/full litter change weekly. (In summer if it's very hot may deep clean twice a week but cat is more inclined to toilet outside if it's not lashing rain and freezing like it is now!)

Why lol?

I’ve been using Catsan wood comfort for years & it’s been fine.

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 24/01/2026 15:12

We use cats best and have a really deep layer in our trays - it’s really easy to remove wee and poo in one clump and so we can get away with changing the entire tray every 3-4 weeks on average.

Stuckstuckstuckfuck · 24/01/2026 15:14

Clean out the poo as soon as we are aware of it.
Complete change of litter everyday. It's not deep though iyswim.
She us happy with it.

Indoor cat.
We use wood pellets. She is prone to UTIs and the gravel stuff seems to make her have more. Maybe it's the dust.

Just a figure of speech.

It just doesn't appeal - and whenever I've cared for cats for homes that use non-clumping, it smells awful to me.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 24/01/2026 15:14

Weekly, with poo scooped daily when noticed. I use catsan non-clumping clay litter so do give the tray a shake when I scoop the poo as then the drier/ clean litter goes to the top. Have tried the clumping litter but couldn’t be bothered with it, much easier to do a full change once a week than scoop multiple times a day and if you don’t remove the clumps daily I found they smelt worse than the non-clumping stuff.

Actually I “dig over” the tray any time the cat does a wee (you always know because he kicks litter everywhere) so same idea in terms of freshening it up.

I dontnknow how people do it so little, or maybe I am smell sensitive. 4 days I do a full change and thorough clean of the trays. I use clumping litter from amazon but ive tried them all and they all stink to me

If you use enough litter, the wee shouldn't reach the tray, so it really shouldn't smell. We use Amazon own brand too and haven't changed the trays once this year.

FunkyMonks · 24/01/2026 19:14

Poop cleaned out as soon as they’ve been I work from home so they think I’m some crazy lady that has a thing for their poop 🤣.
Litter trays are cleaned out completely and fresh weekly it’s so that it’s kept as fresh for them as possible not to ever have them decide that it’s no longer clean and start pooing and peeing outside the litter as well as to keep the house from smelling.

HarpieDuJour · 24/01/2026 19:19

I've recently changed to a new litter that's made from dried seaweed, and I'm finding that I don't need to change it for about 10 days. I scoop every day, and there is no smell. Although I do live very near the sea, so the smell of seaweed is there all the time anyway.

Favouritefruits · 24/01/2026 19:24

I use Sanicat 7 day freshness so I do a full change once a week, obviously I scoop when needed.

I have a nose like a bloodhound - I’m super short sighted so I think it over compensates - and I swear there is no smell here. I made DP get up in the night between Christmas and new year and chuck strong cheese which I could smell in our bedroom, despite being in the fridge, wrapped in tinfoil, in the kitchen. I am certain I’d be aware of a litter tray smell!

Our boy tends to wee in the tray twice a day, poo once, although possibly also goes outside.

Rituelec · 24/01/2026 21:33

Are you using a stainless steel tray? I have heard they are better but do not have one.

What litter do you use?

Ewwww...sadly my cat has died ages 22, I changed her tray daily, and she was an outdoor cat
