How often do you change the tray?

Just wondering what others do. Obviously I remove any poo as soon as possible, but with wee I scoop out as much wet litter as possible and top up when necessary, then change entire tray around every 3 days. I use a cheap non clumping litter.

I'm trying to save money as well as hygiene and wondered what others do. My cat has two trays and tends to wee and poo separately, although not always.

Mine like wood pellets and are only in at night, they choose to be out all day. I have 2 enormous trays and 2 sibling cats who are happy sharing.

They rarely poo indoors but it is removed asap, then a complete change weekly. I don’t scoop the wees with pellets. If it has been very bad weather and they have been inside more then I change every 4-5 days. In the height of summer if it is hot they have been known to go fortnightly between changes as they don’t use the trays at all. But most of the year it is weekly and I get through 60l of pellets per month.

I'm surprised people still buy non-clumping litter for adult cats - it smells awful and seems pretty pointless to me, lol.

Ours doesn’t smell at all (wood pellets). My female cat won’t use anything else, she will
go on the bed rather than use any clay type litters.

Scoop daily. Full change monthly. (Good clumping litter)

I have a metal tray - filled deep with clumping anti bacterial litter

Whole tray is changed once a week

Poo removed as soon as it's done if I'm in or as soon as I'm home . Wee removed as soon as it's done if I'm in .

2 cats - one goes out , 2 trays

( I know they say 3 trays for 2 cats but outdoor doesn't use it)

Caused me a lot of issues being so meticulous as indoor cat HATED the fact they only cleaned the tray out apparently once a day at the cattery . Personally wasn't happy about that and will no longer take her there

We use cats best and have a really deep layer in our trays - it’s really easy to remove wee and poo in one clump and so we can get away with changing the entire tray every 3-4 weeks on average.

Do you just top it up ? I wonder if I'm mad changing out the full thing to weekly ??

Twice a day she’s a shitter .

Are you using a stainless steel tray? I have heard they are better but do not have one.

What litter do you use?

No - when we adopted this boy he came with a tray, so that’s the main one he uses although there are two others in the house. It’s a big plastic corner triangle one, very deep. We use Catsan litter, again because that’s what he had in foster care (he had been a stray kitten and came to us at one).

Our previous cat only used the tray once in a blue moon, so it was a surprise to have a cat that doesn’t like toileting outside once we started letting him out.

Do you do a full change of litter twice a day? I’d be bankrupt, and the whole scrubbing out business is so tiresome, I don’t think I could cope with that!

You clean out and change the litter twice a day? Why?!

2 indoor cats, 2 tray (did have 3 but they never used the third!).

Clumping litter. Scoop multiple times a day. Tray is fully emptied, cleaned with hot soapy water and fresh litter once a fortnight. Top up clumping litter as required- like others, make sure it’s deep enough so nothing hits the bottom.

I do too, it’s the best litter I’ve used - excellent clumping, flushable and with a well filled tray does not need a total clean very often.

Yes, you have to keep a very deep layer, as soon as the wee gets to the tray itself it quickly starts to smell and so then a full change and ready wash is needed.

We have pretty huge litter trays too, to help keep everything away from the edges as much as possible.

Ewwww...sadly my cat has died ages 22, I changed her tray daily, and she was an outdoor cat

that's just wasteful, if you’re using a good clumping litter you don’t need to
why would I throw away clean litter?

I’m sorry to be “that person” but you should never flush cat litter or cat poo down the toilet.

orangelion66 · 25/01/2026 08:19

Clumping litter, scoop wee and poo as soon as I see them, full change every 7-10 days. I might try a deeper layer as the wee is always sticking to the sides and bottom but not sure if that will work, she loves to wee right in the corner so it would stick to the sides anyway.

Yeah, mine seem to pick the same spot :/

PuppyMonkey · 25/01/2026 12:04

I’ve converted to VanCat, recommended previously on here. It’s clumping but you put a really thick layer of it in the tray and it means you never ever have to do a complete change of the litter as no wee or poo ever touches the bottom. Honestly, it’s brilliant.

DrCoconut · 25/01/2026 12:33

My cat is very fussy about litter. I was at my wits end with toilet accidents when I first got him. It was actually due to suggestions on here that we solved the problem. He likes the clumping litter from pets at home or the similar one from the range. Will tolerate Aldi non clumping if you immediately clear anything away before he needs to go again. Will not entertain wood type at all. I tend to do the trays out weekly as well as removing soiled litter as we go.

AnonSugar · 29/01/2026 21:44

I use Catsan non clumping litter and rarely change it. We have a cat flap so she typically goes outside to do the toilet. Can’t remember the last time I had to scoop a poo!

IwanttoWFH · 29/01/2026 21:59

We use wood pellets. I do a full change every other day (and scoop out poo and wee in between). I don’t fill it up too much and it takes only a few minutes to empty, clean down and refill.
I did use clumping litter once and found it an absolute nightmare to change, as the litter turned into cement and stuck to the tray!

Ijwwm · 01/02/2026 04:16

Cat’s Best clumping here - been using it for around 15 years now.

Large litter trays, deeply filled. Pee balls are scooped out easily, as are large (Maine Coon-sized poos). Nothing ever touches the bottom of the tray. I just check and clear out each tray every day. Can’t remember the last time I emptied a whole tray, there’s no need.

Dliplop · 01/02/2026 04:50

2 trays, 1 cat. Clumping pea husk litter, scoop daily and in summer change it every 6-8 weeks for his preferred box and the back up I do half as often. In the winter it’s both boxes every 3-4 weeks. I’m finding I need to do top ups this winter as well, which usually he doesn’t need, but he isn’t going out
