Has anyone put a cat flap in a bedroom door? What type did you use?

Our cat likes to decide to sleep in our teenage sons bed at 3 in the morning.
Our son likes to have his door closed so he has to get out of bed to open the door when the cat miaows but by this stage the whole house is woken.

I could put in one of those plastic ones that swing both ways and cover the plastic with some sort of film to protect my sons privacy.

I have also seen where people cut off the bottom corner of the door and then reattach it with a hinge and that acts as a cat flap.

Any thoughts, suggestions or advice appreciated?
TIA

I have seen one of those multi-paned glass doors with one on the lowest level removed to allow a cat free passage.
I would be interested to hear if anyone has done what you are thinking of, or you may start a trend!

I have a cabin hook on my bedroom door so it’s almost closed but cat can go in and out

the cabin hook keeps the door ajar a few inches but you can’t really tell

helpfulperson · 05/01/2026 18:27

I have a hook on my sitting room door so it is held open enough for a cat to get through.

LoserSnoozer · 05/01/2026 18:55

Unfortunately my son wants it fully closed.
The door is an ancient Victorian/Edwardian type panel door which matches all the others in the house.
It should be possible to put a small cat flap in it.
Just wondering if anyone had used any alternatives.

Have you got a cat flap already? They are pretty noisy plus your cat may not use it. I’d be driven mad by a cat flap in my bedroom door! Remove the cat from the bedroom before your son goes to sleep.

LoserSnoozer · 05/01/2026 19:10

Yes, we have two cat flaps which the cat has to go through to get outside so I think it would be easy to train the cat to use another one.

The cat normally potters about downstairs or outside during the evening or the early hours.
I've tried explaining to the cat how annoying they are being by waking us up at 2 or 3 in the morning but they refuse to compromise!

The noise issue is a fair point.
I have seen some online that don't have a door that swings, instead they have a vertical blind effect which should be silent. I might try one of those.

A plastic one that goes both ways would work, but i would be wary of cutting a hole in a panelled door that matches the rest of the house. Can you source an alternative door, not authentic, so that when the cat decides it no longer wants access or you move, you can restore the original?

We have the same issue with our cats . My son has put bog standard cat flaps in 2 doors . We bought the ones from pets at home . My son said it was easy but he is very handy . We have Edwardian doors with panels .

LoserSnoozer · 05/01/2026 19:15

It's not difficult to source the type of doors we have so not worried about that.

I’d do the cut corner approach.

No noisy cat flap and it can be closed when you want to.

TeenToTwenties · 05/01/2026 19:21

What is the wall made of? Could you put it in the wall somewhere instead of the door?

Bizarrely, there isn't any wall as it is adjacent to the bathroom.

I wouldn't fit a cat flap as they are noisy, I'd cut the corner of the door though.

NoIdontwatchbloodytraitors · 05/01/2026 19:30

Maybe just have the hole without the flap. Cats can get through a skinny hole easily

Iloveeverycat · 05/01/2026 19:31

What about this

Yeah but I don't think my son would want that, not to mention the draught.

We have a sureflap petdoor in our bedroom door, the door does need to be a certain thickness for it to fit.

LoserSnoozer · 05/01/2026 19:45

Actually I think the corner door looks trickier than I thought especially as I'd want it to open both ways.
There is a thing called Kitty corner door which you can buy online but it only opens one way.
I'm sure it's possible to find a hinge and have it open both ways but it might look like a dogs dinner as you'd need to remove an angle from each side to allow it to swing both ways.

We have a 'clear' cat flap which swings both ways in the door to our downstairs loo, which is "the cat's room" overnight but we still need to keep accessible to her in the day for litter tray use.

It's not actually see-through other than if the light it on or off on the other side, the flap is clouded like a bathroom window. It has a 'switch' you can turn to lock it in either or both directions which puts a little red strip across the corner to block the swing, we use this to keep the cat contained overnight.

Ponderingwindow · 05/01/2026 20:06

We bought a different door so that we were not damaging the door that matched all the others. We put the matching door in the storage room.

we used a microchip cat door. That way only one of the cats could get in and it would be easy for dc to lock the cat door for various reasons.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 05/01/2026 20:22

I am surprised that the cat hasn't overcome the staff's reluctance to serve their needs by learning to use the door handles, so that they can access their entire kingdom at will...

One family member had to have upside-down handles for 18 years until the cat died.

Another has given up trying to bar the cats from anywhere in the house.

I have doorknobs (albeit, for my dogs. I was not amused by chewed carpets, trashing the utility room and unexpected foam parties during puppyhood)...

joeninetey · 05/01/2026 20:27

It's a cat flap, and you've been caught.

crazeekat · 05/01/2026 20:37

I have this exact issue. I like my door closed but all my 5 cats like to come and go as they like and if I shut the door I would get zero sleep and have no carpet left as they just scrape and dig til
i get up and unlatch. I don’t need it complete closed but I like it almost closed, as in door and frame touching.
but lol
of course every cat totally headband charges in and throws it wide open, I’m a really light sleeper. If I turn and open my eyes and the door is wide open I need to get up and close it. Once dawn comes the hall window shines right on me. It’s so maddening. Also, as soon as u turn upstairs u can see only me. Sleeping. All the other doors are on the other wall so any serial
killer will spot me first when there is 3 other rooms he can chose first. So not fair when it’s the cats that are leaving it opened, not me. Anyways point is I’m gonna do the cutting the corner of the door thing.

Persephonegoddess · 05/01/2026 20:40

We have these, in our internal doors.

I think piano hinges allow for a swing both ways. You could just cut a section of door and use that as the movable panel. I did this in an under stairs cupboard once.
