What could be wrong with my boy??

Lovely, usually greedy, boy cat is super off his food. Has barely eaten for a couple of days. First day or so I thought he just didn't like the food as I'd got a new type. So went out and bought the usual and the little pate ones with the gloopy stuff on top as he likes these as a treat. He licked the gloopy stuff off and has eaten a few hard cat treats but won't eat his usual dry food. Doesn't seem in any pain, drinking fine, no sick or runny poos. Active as usual but seems a bit 'off'. Got him in at the vets first thing in the morning but don't know if I'm over reacting as he seems fine. Will get him checked anyway. But any ideas??? Picture of my most precious boy as a cat tax.

I would give him a good poke and prod disguised as cuddles. See if he has any injuries or sore patches. Mine normally does this if he has a fight injury.

Iknowdino · 10/12/2025 18:07

Yeah I have done. Everything seems totally fine. With the bad weather we've been having he has barely left the house either so don't think he is hurt. His belly feels soft and squishy and he didn't protest at me feeling it- not sure what I would be feeling for though! His teeth seem fine and he didn't seem in any pain when eating the hard treats either.

How old is he op? Does he go out? Is he using his litter tray and is he neutered?

Unforgettablefire · 10/12/2025 19:45

Ps He is gorgeous! 😍

Igmum · 10/12/2025 21:16

No advice but sending love to you and the gorgeous one 😻. Hope he is sorted soon

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 10/12/2025 21:22

He's gorgeous. He does look a bit off alright though. You could try worm treatment. See if that does any good. They have their little feelings too. My cat can be sad for a day or so over things, usually things like a neighbour not saying hello to him or shooing him away, lol

Iknowdino · 10/12/2025 22:37

Aww thanks he is stunning and such a cutie. I did wonder if he could just be sulking at the weather but he is usually such a little foodie!! Comes in yelling for his breakfast at 6 on the dot every morning. He has recently been wormed. Yes to neutered. Goes outside and uses the woods behind us as a litter tray so not sure on toileting unfortunately. He is currently attacking a ping pong ball so can't be all that ill...

OP how old is he? Asking in case he's still very young and wondered if he's developing new habits/sudden change in food preferences.

It sounds like he ate some of the new food? It could be he didn't take to it well and isn't feeling well without obvious signs of an upset stomach. Mine does this and then after a couple of days his normal appetite comes back.

Also, cats are sometimes just not that hungry and other times they eat heaps without obvious reasons. I tried to make sense of it many times but no idea what it depends on.

I would observe another day as long as he eats something and then see a vet just in case.

Iknowdino · 11/12/2025 09:12

He is 2 in March. We've had him since April this year. Yeah he was eating the new food so maybe made him feel off. He has had some more dry food this morning and was yelling for food and batting the food cupboard so seems hungry but wouldn't eat the wet food I offered. Very active though.
I think I'm just very on edge because we very unexpectedly lost our cat this year and I'm terrified of it happening again. I swore after loosing her that I'd never get another cat again cos I couldn't bare to lose one again but couldn't resist this little man. And I adore him.

Twatalert · 11/12/2025 09:48

It could be he's changed his mind about his normal food and you might have to do trial and error . I recognise this from one of mine. V hungry and keen but won't eat anything he doesn't like. They know they are not street cats and will be given something else haha.

Maybe take him to the vet just in case. It will be worth the peace of mind you might get.

Iknowdino · 11/12/2025 11:05

I've bought him every bloody kind of wet food I could get my hands on in Sainsbury's so hopefully there will be something he will like. He has currently just turned his nose up at stumbles. Thought one that's gentle on tummies could help but he won't touch it. He has had a bit of untamed chicken but refused the tuna one. He even turned down actual boiled chicken.

Oh, he looks like our beautiful girl who we lost last year! She was also very food motivated and had a tendency to be a wee chonk, except one day when she suddenly stopped eating. It turned out that despite being quite young at the time - I think she was three - she had significant dental problems and needed six teeth out and a scale and polish. After that she was #cleanplateclub right to the end, but we did always get the vet to give her teeth a thorough check at her annual boosters as they said she might be prone to it in future.

We have a little boy now who can be a fussy pest around cat food, but would swipe a sausage off your plate with lightening speed.

I'd definitely bring him in for a check up with the vet, but I am quite a Type A cat mum, as the TikTok girlies say.

Gettingbysomehow · 11/12/2025 11:29

My old ginger used to get the equivalent of a cold every year and be off for a few days. He was vaccinated. The vet said cats can get winter viruses just like us.

Iknowdino · 11/12/2025 11:31

Yeah I wondered about teeth but we do regularly brush them and he has royal canin teeth care dry food, were recently checked too and all was fine. I would have thought with food, he'd rather have the wet if it was issues with teeth/mouth??

Ill get him checked out as I'm driving myself crazy, had to drop the kids at school and on the way home I cried in the car thinking I'd get home to find him in some terrible state when I got home.

Judystilldreameofhorses your girl is beautiful and looks just like my boy!! Sorry for your loss.

Twatalert · 11/12/2025 11:37

Yes, get him checked. Hopefully it's nothing.

When you say you have tried all sorts of food - again, it could just be your cat being a cat. Mine doesn't like most food. He'd live off treats if I let him. He's usually just liking one food at a time. When he stops liking his current one I have no idea what I will do. I keep trying new foods but he does not want anything else regularly. My other cat is much easier, but has allergies, so he cannot actually have anything he likes.

Iknowdino · 11/12/2025 12:31

Yeah I wondered actually whether he is just sulking at the bad weather. I've just taken him out to play a bit of fetch and he seems to have cheered up and had a nibble of some more food.

VET ASAP VITAL
Probably a tummy upset
BUT
if a cat does not eat for a few days it can have a catastrophic effect on the organs
I do not understand why people ask for advice on here about their pets heath
It makes me so angry - this is not a joke
If you care about your pet GET TO A VET NOW
You pet relies on you to look after him - he needs to to look after him

My Tortie (11yrs) has had a couple of bouts of pancreatitis this year. She went off her food. Was a bit lethargic. No food really tempted her. She was just not herself really. Took her to the vets. Had blood tests to diagnose the issue. First time - They gave her an anti inflammatory and painkiller. Then she slowly began to eat again. This time last month - the same kind of thing except she had an infection and blood test showed her pancreas levels were up again, so painkiller, anti inflammatory and 8x days of anti biotics. Slowly she began to eat again. She’s fine now. So definitely worth getting checked out at the vet. Hope your kitty feels better soon. Is such a worry when they can’t tell you what’s wrong.

Iknowdino · 11/12/2025 15:50

So the vet has reported that he looks in good health and can't diagnose anything. He was very lively, exploring, even gave a purr. Said to bring him back if he doesn't improve and they will run bloods but think he is fine and nothing to worry about. Just cats being cats!

Thanks for the kind support whilst I had my panic. He has just wolfed down a can of untamed chicken and has given himself wind. I guess I just wasnt catering to his fancy tastes

I’m glad he’s doing better. Sometimes they just have a funny turn but you did the right thing by taking him in to the vet. Mine old boy once burned his tongue and I couldn’t see it because I didn’t know how to look in his mouth properly. The vet knew exactly how to angle his head, saw the red tongue, and gave him pain meds and antibiotics. All sorted. He’s a beautiful boy!

Summersongroses · 11/12/2025 21:11

Glad to hear he’s a bit better that’s good news. Fingers crossed it was just a blip, definitely good to go to the vet to be sure
