Having all teeth removed

The vet has suggested that Miss Penelope has all her teeth out, as long as it doesn’t cause trauma to the jaw. Has anyone else’s cat had this and could they still eat dry food?

They can! But they may prefer not to. They generally do very well after and appreciate being pain-free.

AnonKat · 07/11/2025 16:25

My cat has only the tiny teeth at the front left. She stills eats dry food, although its an elderly softer one. She still prefers that to wet. She will probably have the rest out soon, as she has FOPS.

My boy has FIV (cat AIDS) which causes lots of gum problems. He had all his teeth out three years ago & is absolutely fine. He still eats hard, dry biscuits. I started off soaking them in water but he prefers them crunchy.

Our cat had most of his teeth out or cut off last year. He was much happier after and must have been in pain. We were very cautious about hard biscuits after but he had other ideas and manages fine.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/11/2025 17:21

Thanks for that. She’s only five and had 6 teeth out when she was only 3. I think it’s best for her and my bank account for them to Get them all out.

She’s been looking very smug since the stage one dental last week. So I do wonder if they are causing her pain she’s masking.

Meet Reggie. Living proof that it's possible for a cat with no teeth to inhale eat biscuits!

Reggie has no teeth but we've got another one and they left his tiny front ones due to the risk of damage to the jaw.

Allergictoironing · 07/11/2025 17:37

Didn't Ollie have all his teeth bar one fang out?

FuzzyWolf · 07/11/2025 17:38

I hope all goes well for Miss Penelope (love the name). I’ve had cats have all of their teeth removed and they have always bounced back and eaten without any notable difficulty.

Houndymumma · 07/11/2025 17:52

My poor feline floof is just about to have a few teeth out. He’s only 6 so seems young. My previous cats did very well until old age with their teeth. When my last boy was a bit toothless I use to buy him Gourmet Pate as he simply licked it. But from this thread it seems many cats are fine with dry food so hoping my boy will be the same.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/11/2025 18:59

@Houndymummashe’s only five. 😰

She likes thrive fish flavours. So
that's a bonus. My previous Persians who had jaw issues would t touch wet food.

My previous Persians who had jaw issues

I was thinking about that - possibly something to do with the inbreeding and those exceptionally flat faces? Of course it could equally be the way showing and breeding Persian queens are cared for as well...

Houndymumma · 07/11/2025 19:06

@Toddlerteaplease yes seems young, I wondered if the bad teeth were just genetic with my boy. I’m worried about my boy going through it at the end of this month but at least other posters here seem to have a positive outcome and their cats are still managing ok. I did have a dog who lost a good few teeth in old age and she still ate everything in sight so fingers crossed.

Noverium · 07/11/2025 19:09

Our 2 year old went in to have them all out after suffering with extreme gum issues. When the vet rang she said she had left the two front fangs as they were so firmly in and she was worried about breaking his jaw. She said if he had problems she would go in again in a couple of years.
We were given medication to give him to try to clear up the remaining gingervitis. It didn’t work and we kept trying different medications. Then we went on holiday and our cat sitter couldn’t get the tablets down. After two weeks with no meds the cats mouth looked better than we had ever seen it. I think the stress of daily tablets was making things worse.
He is now doing very well and only eats dry food. He was a little overweight before surgery and gained weight after so is now on a strict diet.

pointythings · 07/11/2025 19:29

My orange one has no teeth and has only just turned 4 - he was a street cat in Egypt and had them out before turning 2 due to major infection. He also has gingivostomatitis and is CKD stage 2, but his gum disease is currently in complete remission, he eats dry food very happily (Lily's Kitchen chicken is his favourite) and is in better health a year post diagnosis. They can do very well as gummi bears.

Houndymumma · 07/11/2025 19:51

Yes my boy is a ginger boy too, just a short haired tabby from the RSPCA. We’ve had him from a kitten though as he was found as a baby on an industrial estate.

KeenGreen · 07/11/2025 20:38

Our cat had all his teeth out and managed fine!

He was 8 years old and the day we brought him back from the appointment he ran straight to other cats bowl and started eating dry food 🥴

once healed though he was fine!

He lived for a good long time! And managed to eat dry food all the time. Was about 16 when he died.

fivebyfivefaith · 07/11/2025 20:45

Ollie chomped through a raw chicken wing the day after having his out. Never hindered him, the gums harden up

Just an observation that whenever I've stepped in cat sick from my two who still have most of their teeth, the vomited up kibbles look little different from when they went in. I don't think they chew them much if at all. The periodic vomiting only precipitates the ejection of hairballs, so it isn't that they are being sick because they've swallowed them whole.

Puppylucky · 07/11/2025 21:26

@pointythings so glad to hear your Egyptian boy is still thriving !

I remember you!
He's doing ridiculously well. He wasn't great earlier in the year - stopped eating his renal diet food and was being really stubborn about wet food. He was losing weight and so in desperation I started giving him poached chicken and poached fish (alongside high quality dry food) and he turned it round - he's put on 600g since April and is at perfect weight, his coat is shiny, his energy levels are perfect and his gum disease is in remission. Vet thinks he's a miracle cat and we could have longer than usual with him.

That is a very good point, when she was sick the other week, it was still the same as when it went in!

My cat had all his back teeth out aged 5, he lived until age 15 eating anything and everything.
