Upset the cat. How to get love back!

My big old ginger and white ball of fluff usually loves me. Cuddles in bed in the mornings etc.
Basically indoor cat with small, enclosed patio area. Terrified of vet so myself and ds decided to do flea treatment as despite not knowing how possibly could have got them suspected fleas. We messed it up and really stressed him out.
He is blaming me most. Looking at me from a distance and skitting away if I go near. Still eating food I put down. No cuddles this morning just accusing looks. I feel like a monster!!
Anything apart from time to help him forgive me?!

Oh why I love my dog so much.

No grudges, just unconditional love

Have you resorted to bribery? Tuna in spring water or even dreamies does wonders when I have offended mine..

P.s. We've had fleas with mostly indoor only pets before too, the vet said they can come in on your shoes/clothing, or a passing cat could have left them in the garden. A nightmare, but you've done the right thing if you suspected fleas.

WonderingWanda · 23/09/2025 06:46

Dreamies seem to be very popular with my cat. What kind of flea treatment did you use? The little tubes of treatment you put on their necks take seconds to administer. Although you do need a check up with the vet once a year for them to be prescribed (well the ones that work at least).

EmeraldJeanie · 23/09/2025 06:48

Bribery has happened this morning! He took dreamies from me...then stalked off flapping his tail...
Found old box for him which he is in now..Still looking at me with hurt eyes!
Will see what he is like when get back from work!

He’ll be back when he’s decided you have paid enough, and not before. Go and sit in the corner and think about what you have done, bad human. And buy more Dreamies.

EmeraldJeanie · 23/09/2025 06:49

Used neck one.
I think he smells it!

He is very Dreamie led. Hating me but Dreamie urge stronger!

One of mine (also ginger and white!) needs daily medication squirted into his mouth which sometimes he decides is the worst thing in the world! He is generously rewarded with cheesy dreamies and gets over it after an hour or two!

EmeraldJeanie · 23/09/2025 07:08

Cheesy Dreamies here as well!

What did you do. Flea treatments are so easy now. I hope you didn't try giving him a bath!!!!

LemonTwix · 23/09/2025 07:30

Sheesh, the things we do. I was literally down on my knees apologising to my cat last night as I’d accidentally dropped something on her while she was on my lap. She eventually deigned to return to my lap after several minutes of being poised to run upstairs if I didn’t keep grovelling.

sashh · 23/09/2025 07:33

Mine gets a slice of ham and that brings her round.

Wkanznjs · 23/09/2025 07:41

Those neck flea things smell absolutely horrible. I would try to replace that with a pill next time. Hopefully the cat will feel better as the smell diminishes.

EmeraldJeanie · 23/09/2025 07:41

Literally, the on neck thing sends him wild! Also, myself and ds managed to scare him. Not intentional of course...

lol I have the same issue after accidentally stepping on ours (she always sneaks up behind us in the kitchen) - 2 months on still sulking. What a drama queen!!

KrupBrie · 23/09/2025 07:58

I find cat annoyance never lasts more than 24h!

UnmarketableTomato · 23/09/2025 08:06

I've got one who runs away sideways once that stuff hits his neck. One Lick E Lix later and all is forgiven, particularly the cat nip ones. The new lick e lollipops are also very well received.

FionnulaTheCooler · 23/09/2025 08:06

Mine is in the huff with me too. She had a vet visit yesterday. It took both me and DH and about 15 minutes of yowling and growling and wrestling to get the dose of gabapentin down her beforehand, she gets majorly stressed going in the car and it's meant to help her calm down. I needed a bloody gabapentin after that palaver. Then the indignity of being prodded and poked by the vet, injected with her vaccine, and scolded for being overweight. I'm not surprised she's not speaking to me. She's a stubborn tortie with attitude at the best of times so she'll probably keep it going all week.

Happyjoe · 23/09/2025 14:10

I read once that cats hang on to negativity! Certainly true with ours! Just give it time, that and a few treats and if plays, lots of offers of play time.

EmeraldJeanie · 23/09/2025 16:23

Well...a welcome at the door as usual when I got home. Tolerated being picked up and cuddled as a precursor to Dreamies!
All rather food related but not been glared at yet!

Spoke too soon...just skidaddled away from me... now full of Dreamies...not yet fully forgiven!

Oh wow he’s gorgeous 😻 have you offered a sincere apology, along with the Dreamies? I’ve never known a cat who wouldn’t graciously accept a grovelling apology.

Pixiedust1234 · 23/09/2025 20:34

None of our cats have tolerated the spot on flea treatments so we now use the tablet (Credilio?). Put it on the floor with 3 dreamies and it magically disappears!

I love that last photo 😂

EmeraldJeanie · 23/09/2025 20:37

I shall grovel more...
He does brief forgiveness for Dreamies!
However, we do need to watch his weight though he would say he is big boned and it is mostly fluff!
