Hi I put some flea medication on my cat but she was squirming a lot so most of it went on her fur. Tonight I noticed a flea on her so don’t think I done it properly but according to google I can’t add anymore so what’s best to do now? Thanks

Go on Atlantic pets and order credelio, crush it into a lic a lix. In the meantime use a flea comb and get them out.

So I am allowed to use another flea treatment? Online is saying something about overdose but I’m not sure how much went on

Which flea treatment was it. Some are not very effective. Try the comb and get the pesky things out.

I defo find the crushed tablets very effective as cat used the hate the drops.

HelloKittyFan · 15/09/2025 10:58

I’m too squeamish to comb them out didn’t even realise people do this?! It was frontline

Sunshineandrainbow · 15/09/2025 11:22

Apparently fleas have become resistant to frontline.

I find it easy to comb out and shove them in a cup of water.

You need to do something quickly as they will multiple fast.

HelloKittyFan · 15/09/2025 11:38

Sorry if this is a silly question but if I comb them will they not just jump off somewhere? Combing them won’t kill them?

OP posts:
Chemenger · 15/09/2025 11:44

Comb them out with a flea comb. Swish the comb in a cup of water with a drop of washing up liquid in it when you get one. The washing up liquid reduces the surface tension so they will sink and drown. Or you can crush them with your fingernails.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 15/09/2025 12:31

Your cat needs to see the vet for appropriate treatment - just using a comb and OTC medication won’t help at this stage.

KoalaKoKo · 15/09/2025 12:50

Get stronger medication from the vets! My old cats got fleas while on frontline - in some areas they’ve grown immune. You will need to treat all soft furnishings and carpets with flea treatment too - indorex is very good - cat fleas are hard to get rid of!

HelloKittyFan · 15/09/2025 13:45

So over the counter products don’t kill fleas as they say they kill fleas in 24 hours?

The problem is that a lot of fleas have grown resistant to a lot of flea treatments, particularly the other the counter ones. The vet can give you something stronger. Fleas can also live on your furniture and carpets and the eggs can survive for a year or so in your carpets so once you have them you have to treat all the animals and the house.

Fleas become resistant to many OTC products - you need a vet to assess your cat and prescribe appropriate treatment for her.

HelloKittyFan · 05/10/2025 00:16

Just to say I bought advantage and it worked a treat, all fleas killed within 24 hours and none in the house, so much for OTC products not working! Saved myself a fortune.

I second Credilio, my cat acts like I'm murdering her with spot on treatments.

I put the tablet in tuna and mayo and she gobbles it up.

I've not seen a flea for over a year.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 05/10/2025 18:42

I was going to suggest a zapper comb. You comb the cat normally and then when you see a flea in between the bristles, you turn the comb on and zap the fleas. You're supposed to have the comb 'on' the whole time you're combing, but with my cats they hated the sound. The satisfaction of seeing/smelling the flea get zapped makes it fun. But then again I'm probably a bit of psychopath in that regard... and I've just noticed upthread you mention you're squeamish on sight of the fleas. So that suggestion is moot.

Just as an aside here, as a fairly new cat owner, I seem to be getting a lot of itchy bites and am worried it's from fleas when the cat sleeps on my bed, usually across my legs 😢 Do you all get bites too??

Yes I do sometimes.
. Have you treated the cat?

No over the counter products work. Advantage used to, but no longer does. Frontline hasn't worked for years. From a vet you need Nexgard, Bravecto, Felpreva or Credelio.

No. Have you flea combed the cat to check for fleas? You need to ask a vet to prescribe one of the products I mentioned in my post above.

It does 😊

What does? And remember, absence of fleas doesn't mean a treatment is working - it just means your cat hasn't picked up any fleas.

Itchy bites on your ankles/legs are likely to be from fleas in the carpets I'm afraid. The cat needs prescription flea treatment (Bravecto or similar) and you can kill the fleas in the home by steam cleaning everything or using Indorex spray (or both!).

HelloKittyFan · 06/10/2025 22:29

Advantage…She was crawling with fleas and so was the house, they all gone now and only cost £15. Vet wanted £60 just for an appointment (no treatment)

Advantage was only 6 quid on amazon this weekend. Although that maybe because mine's a small cat, I haven't tried it for different weights to check.
