So i have a 8 mth old kitten that has been going out for the past couple of months. I cannot for the life of me get on top of the fleas though. Ive tried the tablets, the spot ons the sprays, the shampoos - all different brands. I have spent over 100 pounds on it which I can ill afford and I cannot get them to go. They go for a couple of days then they are back. Id make him an inside cat if I could but when i try he just howls at the door - so much so my neighbour called me when at work worried about him.

What do I do??? Anyone been through this and have any recommends?

Have you been to the vet and got a treatment from them? Over the counter treatments arent always effective
Indorex for the house
Vet treatment for the cat

Homesweethome21 · 29/08/2025 15:56

Have you used something on the cat the kills the fleas? And then something that repels them?

chailatte8 · 29/08/2025 15:59

Have you tried bravecto prescribed by the vet?

Meem321 · 29/08/2025 16:07

Hoover.
Indorex spray.
Hoover.
Imdorex.
Hoover.
Flea lamp in every room where fleas are or where cat frequents.

Repeat.

Good luck. And see the vet. Over counter stuff is notoriously shite

Bookkeepermum · 29/08/2025 17:38

Don't waste money on shop flea treatments. Go to your vet for a prescription for Bravecto (expensive but lasts 3 months and has a guarantee) & Indorex spray. Unfortunately, you'll have to wait for any treatments already applied to "wear off" before applying anymore, otherwise you'll overdose the cat and then that will be an extremely expensive stay in the vets on a drip. Vacuum & change bedding daily until it's under control. You can use a flea comb while you're waiting to apply a treatment.
If Bravecto is too expensive for you, ask for Frontline spray but only the spray! The drops are not as effective. Best of luck.

Florin · 29/08/2025 17:43

You are wasting your money buying anything that isn’t from the vet. We tried them all only the vet stuff works.

Solocatmum · 29/08/2025 17:44

Its not a passive job.

indorex (multiple cans) on every soft surface especially round the edges. Wash everything on hot that can be washed. Hoover everyday for at least a month (and hoover soft furnishing)

i think I used a variety of room bombs too.

Try different spot on. Think about a flea collar.

Loramora · 29/08/2025 17:47

I had to get an exterminator in when my house had one. I was bitten to buggery. Cost me about £90 and I had to leave the house for 3 hours after he'd sprayed everywhere. But they were finally gone.

I wwas going to say the same ,
You need to be ridiculously through when vac'ing and spraying .
Pull all the furniture out , flip all the mattress, move all the beds pull the cooker fridge and washer out and vacuum slowly and methodically .
Wash as much as the soft furnishings ( don't forget the curtains) as you can.
If you have fish or reptiles if you can move them out of the house , if not cover their tanks with clingfilm/ bin bags and tape down well.
Make sure everyone is ready to leave the house including any other pets

Starting at the top of the house in the furthest bedroom spray throughly every surface and all the nooks and crannies.
Working your way to the front door spray each room .
Leave the house , ( its a hardh chemical uou dont want to be breathing it in ) take the cat to the vets for proper treatment.
Stay out of the house for as long as possible ( at least 1hr pref 2 or 3 )
Then repeat the vac'ing.

Then repat the whole thing again a week , then 2 weeks later.

It's time consuming, annoying, expensive but if done properly it will work
About once every 3/4 months go round with a lighter spraying of indore.

ButFirst · 29/08/2025 18:03

We had this too, rehomed a cat and she was riddled, spent a fortune on different treatments and shampoos. The one thing that has really worked for us and ended the fleas is the monthly treatment from Pets at Home. I'd highly recommend it if you haven't already tried it

Theweecatsmum · 29/08/2025 18:31

You need credulio monthly tablet (fleas) and milpro tablet 3 months (for worms). It’s expensive but its part of the expense of a pet.

Namenotimportant85 · 29/08/2025 18:39

We have had the same problem in the past. It takes a minimum of 3 months to get rid of a flee infestation properly. You need indorex spray for the home which you need to use every other day and hovering. The spot on stuff you buy over the counter isn’t very good anymore as the flees have become immune to it. You need to get a prescription from the vets. We use bravecto or advocate!
good luck!!

amylou8 · 29/08/2025 18:53

I use the Johnson4fleas tablets. Crush them in a pill crusher and mix them in something tasty. They kill the fleas on the cat within a few minutes. Once they start scratching again about a week later repeat. They're cheap and it keeps on top of them.

ninjahamster · 29/08/2025 18:55

I agree with vet treatments. My pets have them and have never had fleas.

Pepperedpickles · 29/08/2025 18:58

You need prescribed vet flea treatment if you haven’t done this. The over the counter ones don’t work - or don’t work as well. Many vets offer a healthy pet plan scheme for about £20 a month which includes flea and worming treatments and money off consultations. We pay £20 a month for this and £40 a month for the top insurance through pet plan. If you haven’t already got pet insurance make sure you do as if you can’t afford £100 for flea treatments you really don’t want to be stuck with a massive vets bill…!

DeanStockwelll · 29/08/2025 19:05

@ButFirst oooh you were going to get a earful of me then , I misread your 1st line and thought it meant you'd rehomed your cat because of fleas !

Ahh hmm , as you were. 😳

OneSharpFinch · 29/08/2025 19:07

all of the above plus flea comb a couple of times a day - I also think its good to change whatever treatment you use every year or two as I'm sure the fleas get resistant to it.

DangerousAlchemy · 29/08/2025 21:07

Treatments like Frontline and Advantage no longer work as fleas have become resistant to them. I foster cats & have my own too and I use Bravecto or Selapro spot on. flea comb too plus treat the house and wash all bedding and vacuum regularly. keep using the flea comb.

Sunshineandrainbow · 29/08/2025 23:41

Look on Atlantic pets for Credelio it's so good and effective.

magictits · 30/08/2025 09:20

Yikes. I had no idea all the crap Ive been using is pointless. I need to get to the vet then. Sounds like its gonna cost big bucks. Hes still riddled no matter what I do. They are gone for a day then back with a vengence. Its super grossing me out. And I feel so sorry for him. They really shouldn't sell stuff over the counter if it doesn't work hey.

Off to the vets we go.....

OP posts:
Sunshineandrainbow · 30/08/2025 09:37

You are right @magictits frustrating the stuff they sell is useless.

Atlantic pets sell prescription only stuff but take 7 days ISH to arrive. Maybe look at that once you have some stuff if you can't wait.

A flea comb is really good too.

They probably aren't gone it will be new eggs hatching out in his coat so the cycle starts again. combing with a proper flea comb should also help but yes deffo get the stronger stuff from the vets and definitely treat the house too (but you have to move cats/pets/fish out of the room while you're treating it and for a number of hours after so do check instructions really carefully

Flea eggs live in the environment ( normally carpets) not on the cat. But I agree it is new fleas hatching. You need to treat the environment as well as the cat.

Meem321 · 31/08/2025 11:25

Forgot to say- washing soft furnishing doesn't kill the eggs... Tumble dry everything you can on HOT. That kills the buggers.
