My 5 month old kitten has run off on his leash while my husband was outside with him. Near to home but he's not been out of the garden before and we can't find him anywhere :( We've only had him since January and are totally in love with him. Have we lost him :(

Was the lead still attached to him? It could be tangled around something like a tree. You need to knock on all neighbours doors and ask them to check their gardens etc. Call loudly his name and listen for miaw replies.

If he was off lead hopefully he'll show up or someone will find him.

Post on your local Facebook pages. Put his litter tray and a worn piece of clothing so he can smell his way back home.

Good luck, hope you find him.

Put the litter box outside so he can smell it

My husband said he has the leash attached to him and he has been searching our area for 2 hours, he has a bag of dreamies and is shouting but he's not finding him. He has put some of his litter tray in the back and front garden.

I'm at work and could cry x

He has put some of his used litter tray in the back and front garden. I think I'll ring him and tell him to put the whole box out.

Definitely get him to knock on neighbours of the area. More eyes are better than one etc

i hope the kitten turns up.

Your husband (and you) need to be very clear about what to do when out with the kitten/cat on a leash. And that is: constantly to have hold of it. It is irresponsible not to.

faerietales · 13/05/2025 16:49

Oh dear - I’m afraid you’ve not been very responsible. Entire males can (and do) roam for miles in search of a female - you may want to extend your search much further than you think.

Strudie · 13/05/2025 16:57

Some of the comments on here are neither kind nor helpful. I’m so sorry OP, I really hope he turns up. There’s some good advice here: www.cats.org.uk/help-and-advice/lost-found-and-feral-cats/lost-a-cat

Esgaroth · 13/05/2025 17:01

If he's young and never been free before he might be very close to where he ran off but freaked out and hiding. I'd try focusing on that exact spot but look carefully into bushes etc?

Sorry, it must be a huge worry especially with the potential for the lead to get tangled in something. Can he get himself out of the collar/harness if he tries?

Itsallovernow23 · 13/05/2025 17:01

My kitten is neutered so it might be different but she was hiding under a shelf in our garden for a whole day. Can you leave a door open for him? He's likely to come back but might not for a day or so

dogcatkitten · 13/05/2025 17:18

How far from home was he? I would hope he could find his way back, the leash worries me more as it could get tangled on something. Hope he turns up soon.

January is a while so he will want to come home, is he a house cat normally or does he have outdoor space? If a house cat he may be more frightened by being outside. We inherited a house cat that took a while to be comfortable going out in the garden, loved it eventually.

He's a kitten!

AliceM456 · 13/05/2025 17:24

You don't have anything to worry about neuter-wise for months and months yet. Don't let others scare you. He will be back 👍

TossieFleacake · 13/05/2025 17:25

He's more likely to be around when it gets dark, take a torch out with you if you are still looking later, it reflects off cats eyes.
Empty your hoover bag into the garden so the smell of home reaches out.
My 9 month old kitten ran off a couple of months ago, he was gone for 6 hours but came back close to the house at night.
Good luck.

He's 5 months old! He should be getting neutered before being let out.

He's only five months old

He's a kitten!

So? He's old enough to produce kittens.

Elliania · 13/05/2025 17:36

Morningsleepin · 13/05/2025 17:34

He's only five months old

Male cats reach sexual maturity between 5-7 months old. So he's old enough to be interested in finding a female for sure.

faerietales · 13/05/2025 17:37

Morningsleepin · 13/05/2025 17:34

He's only five months old

A five month old entire male is capable of having sex and potentially reproducing. Cats reach sexual maturity very early.

Nobody should be letting entire male cats of any age outside. It's incredibly irresponsible.

faerietales · 13/05/2025 17:38

AliceM456 · 13/05/2025 17:24

She absolutely does. Female cats can become pregnant from four months of age. Males can reach sexual maturity as early as five months of age.

She has an entire male cat loose outside - he will absolutely be off to roam and breed if he gets the chance.

ChompandaGrazia · 13/05/2025 17:43

Oh you poor thing. It’s so dreadful when something like this happens and you aren’t there. You had him on a lead, there was nothing wrong with him being outside on a lead.
