Picking up our kitten tomorrow!!! What do I need?

So far we have: 1 big bag (1.5kg) of dry food, 24 pouches of wet food.
Cat bed, cat carrier, a couple of toys. Litter tray.
Is there anything else I need to get before we get him?
I don’t have a food and water bowl yet so planning to use some old ones I have homw and then get some for him.
Anything I need to be aware of safety-wise (for him I mean)?

I'm assuming that you just forgot to add litter to put in the tray? And hopefully you've got the same food & litter he's on at present...

Kittens can vanish into the tiniest spaces that you wouldn't believe. You'll need to make sure he can't get under or behind anything, that you don't have an open chimney he can get up, and of course you need to keep doors & windows very carefully closed as he shouldn't be allowed out until a) fully vaccinated, b) neutered (usually 4 months) or c) big enough to cope (estimate 6 months). You'll need to watch out for him being underfoot so you don't kick him by mistake, be ultra careful if you have recliner seating, watch out if you move anything.

Hide anything delicate away from being knocked down, and remember that your soft furnishings e.g. curtains may well not survive a kitten!

Finally, remember to post pics here once he's home!

Get him a scratching pad or post, otherwise he might use the furniture or your legs. Talk to him and handle him gently. Get him used to a routine.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 04/05/2025 15:22

Placemarking for kitten pictures (hopefully)

Croissantsfordinner · 04/05/2025 15:23

Yes re the litter and food, got what he is used to now.
Yep need to pick up a scratching post. I think I need to cover my sofa with cheap blankets for the time being…

Cardboard boxes.
. How exciting

rosydreams · 04/05/2025 15:27

do you have the same food he is currently eating. They need to be slowly introduced to new food by adding small amounts of new food to old gradually increasing new food. Otherwise they get runny tummy

Tortielady · 04/05/2025 15:28

A soft toy for him to cuddle up to. He might miss his Mum and siblings the first night or two away from them and will need some time to get used to you as his new family.

Edited

good tactic get a soft fuzzy blanket and hug mum with it, Give her a good scratch with it .That way new kitten will have a blanket that smells of her

WaffleParty · 04/05/2025 15:32

How exciting!
We had a litter tray in upstairs bathroom as well as downstairs to start with.
Plenty of toys.
Hopefully he will come with a blanket or toy he is used to.

Definately. With a snuggly blanket inside and a hole cut in the side for easy access.

And don't forget to pay your Cat Tax 😻

If you buy them a bed they'll inevitably ignore it and sleep behind the bathtub in a tiny crawl space!
Deffo get a couple scratching posts.
When I get new kittens I put a feeding station with dry food and water on a tray thing, with a small litter tray nearby in one room at first, and something comfy. Let them get used to that room then after a few days let them explore the rest of the house.

MuddlingThroughLife · 04/05/2025 15:56

I would say you need:

Litter tray and litter
Poop scoop
Nappy sacks to put the poop in
Bed
Blankets
Toys (lots)
Scratch posts and pads
Cat tree
Cat brush
Nail clippers
More toys
Flea and worm treatments
Pet plan
Pet insurance
More toys 🤣

wizzbitt · 04/05/2025 15:57

Oh and don't buy plastic bowls, they can cause cat acne!

That's what we have, stainless steel tilted bowls.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/05/2025 20:51

Re dishes, we have a load of these for our cat’s wet food (lots of cute different designs!) as he didn’t seem to like the proper cat bowls we had from places like Pets at Home. He’d eat dry from anything but is fussy about wet.

I’d add a food mat to your list, something that goes under dishes and creates a designated “feeding space”. Useful for messy cats. We have water on there too but also another water dish in the living room which he generally prefers, but is shut in the kitchen overnight.

stormsandsunshine · 04/05/2025 21:48

Plan to keep him in one room at first so he doesn’t get too overwhelmed by being in a new space. Make sure he has safe hiding places in that room and keep his food, water; and litter tray in separate areas. Be led by him as to when he is ready to come out of that room.

Leave the carrier he arrives in out in the room and open too. He may feel safest hiding in that at first.

ChompandaGrazia · 04/05/2025 21:55

Lots of pictures.
Lots of patience.
somewhere to hide. We had a blanket over a chair.
Be prepared for the kitten to hide away for a while.

Auroraloves · 05/05/2025 00:42

Definitely a scratching post. Can’t wait to see pictures

rosydreams · 05/05/2025 10:49

spray scratching post with catnip to perk a interest in it
