He’s begging to be in my bed every night

My cat is 3 and until the last few weeks has been (reasonably) well behaved. He wants breakfast at 5am so he has an automatic feeder so I don’t have to get up. He would sleep in his basket from 10pm until breakfast at 5 and then quietly do his own thing until I get up later.

Until now.

He’s been meowing at clawing at the door at any time from midnight to 4am. I give in and open the door. Sometimes he curls up on the bed, sometimes he is ultra annoying jumping on headboard and pushing whatever he can on the floor. I wake up at 7am and he’s snoozing on the bed, after having eaten.

i can’t leave the door open for him when I go to sleep as I don’t live alone and I’ll be disturbed by noise and lights. Cat isn’t bothered about having company with anyone else.

i can’t shut him in downstairs as he tears the carpet up and meows the house down. I feel like I have a young baby waking me at all hours. HELP

Could you leave your door open just a few inches? you could put a door stopper in?

Overtheatlantic · 30/03/2025 21:04

Why can’t he sleep with you at night?

AllTheOtherCats · 30/03/2025 21:34

What a wonderful little kitty wanting to sleep with you. You’re his place of love and safety. Treasure this x

If you do need to have your bedroom door closed, you can buy little cat arches that fit in the bottom of your door so your kitty can enter and exit as they wish. They could work well for you and your cat 🐈‍⬛

Like this one for example x

My dcat we found by the bins sleeps with me every night for the 8 years he was with me before he died. Unless there is.a good reason to not let him in the room at night I would just let him. Chances are he won't stay there all night but he wants to fall asleep with you and that is very special.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 30/03/2025 21:43

Leave the door open, keep some dreamies next to your bed and chuck a handful in his direction.

Maybe he just wants to be near you.

I'm trying to imagine what would happen to me if I tried to shut a door on my cat. She'd go crazy. I can't even go to the bloody loo. It's like having a toddler again. 🤣

BIWI · 30/03/2025 21:45

Put food down for him when you go to bed.

Then when you go to bed, you leave your bedroom door open.

No problem! He’s fed, he has access to the person we loves most in the world <3

pilates · 30/03/2025 21:48

I would put him in your bedroom when you go to sleep and see if he settles through the night. My cat used to sleep on my back - I loved it.😻

I saw the title and thought it was your partner begging to be your bed every night!

Ah - it’s in the Litter tray forum…

Such a misleading title 😂

OP, this is so cute!!! Pls let kitty sleep with you - it’s such a treasure in life 🤍

I leave my door open a crack and wear an eye mask. Usually two of them sleep on my bed especially if the electric blanket is on! The dry food-is on a timer and when they hear it at6am they go and eat have a wee and get back to my bed. I love it.

Why can’t he sleep with you at night?

I can’t have the door open all night (and he wants breakfast at 5am)

I fail to understand. Our 11 year old dog has slept with me and DH since she was 9 weeks old. In these 11 years DS9 and DD5 have been born, and whilst ddog fucked off downstairs for 6 months each when whining newborns slept in our room she’s never not slept with us. Our privilege that we get to sleep with our beautiful, lovely pet.

Why can’t you?

ParsnipPuree · 30/03/2025 22:28

My cats would love to sleep with me. I turf them out every night though. I have real problem sleeping as it is and if they’re in our room they use me as a springboard at 5am, and I’m like a zombie all day. Apart from this they have an idyllic life with me and dh home all day spoiling them. I just couldn’t do it.

SassySusie · 30/03/2025 22:29

My cats want to sleep with me too, but then typically wake very early and want to wake me too. I don’t want to wake at 5 so the door is shut all night to give me a good night sleep. I would love for them to sleep with me, but haven’t been able to negotiate for them not to wake me at 5…

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/03/2025 22:35

We must be terrible because we shut our boy in the kitchen overnight, otherwise he’s a total pest at 5am looking for his breakfast. Occasionally if DP is working away I let him sleep with me, and it’s all fun and games until he’s pulling my hair and dancing at the bedside.

TheGentleOpalMember · 31/03/2025 02:41

If he meows, just let him in and shut the door.

We leave kibble out for ours, just top the bowl up regularly, so she can graze whenever she wants. No need to wake up or feed her. I am surprised at people who need to feed their cat at set times instead of just keeping the bowl full so the cat can eat whenever it wants. Just top her bowl up before you go to sleep. Then she can eat at 5am or 4am or 6am or 11am.

Tradersinsnow · 31/03/2025 02:49

I have a cat flap in my bedroom door so the cats can come and go. Otherwise they were demanding to be let in and out all night.

sashh · 31/03/2025 05:15

Could you put a cat flap in?

BTW where is the kitty tax?

Oh and really it is his bed he allows you to use when he is not.

C080889 · 31/03/2025 05:47

Had my rescue 12 years. I am a total mug. Wakes me regular between 4-5am to be fed. I feed her. Sometimes I get up for work at 5.30am. I think over the years my body has adjusted to it somewhat.

I love her so much she can do no wrong! Its worth it for the bed snuggles.

I pee at least twice a night and each time she escorts me to the bathroom. Its give and take in this house.

God I love the tiring little bleep

Toddlerteaplease · 31/03/2025 05:55

All of mine have slept with me. Cheddar was a pain, as she would wake me for cuddles. But it’s so lovely having them with me, I didn’t mind. I leave my door open a few inches.

Missey85 · 31/03/2025 06:00

I sleep with my cat every night she's a furry hot water bottle 😊❤️

Jasmine222 · 31/03/2025 06:02

Is he allowed out? He's probably bored if not, because cats are most active at night and our cat is the same if it's bucketing down with rain and he doesn't want to be outside. He has a cat flap to go into the garden (we live in a quiet neighbourhood with no busy roads). If you don't plan to let him out, getting another cat to keep him company might help. You can also get some cat toys like a cat marble slope or various things he can chase around the kitchen.. our cat loves those. Something to stop boredom.

Think yourself lucky you only have one.
Our fouth cat was on the other side of the bed...

Our cat (and our previous girl so he can’t be that unusual) would wolf the lot in five minutes flat. He’s not fussed on wet food but hoovers up biscuits in seconds, so he gets small amounts regularly. Our previous girl was so greedy for dry food she had to have it in a puzzle feeder to slow her down.
