This is new, but been going on for a few weeks now. Weight wise and health all fine.

He is 12-13.

An hour after breakfast some days he's shouting for more food. He's trying to tell me now it is teatime. It's not until 4.30 but he's been asking for over an hour. I've been trying ti get him to go to five o'clock but no chance.

Thyroid issues maybe?

What are the symptoms please? I did ask at the vet the other day if an issue and I weighed him but his weight is fine, so he's not losing any.

Mine has started asking for more food - I wonder if it's the weather, as she has suddenly started going outside and doing some exercise.

JeanGenieJean · 24/03/2025 16:26

My cat was like this around the same age and he was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. I could also feel that he had a fast, pounding heart. He had to have a tablet every day (that was fun!).

2025willbemytime · 24/03/2025 16:40

I fed him then minutes later I've caught him trying to get to my crab salad which was high up. I said hey and he ran off but came back really quickly when I called him and gave him his sister's left bit of dinner.

I am worried but as his weight is fine I'm not sure if I need to be.

Check the weight of the food if you're feeding pouches. There's a few makes out there (notably Felix) who went from 100g pouches to 85g without telling anyone about the change.

SallyWD · 24/03/2025 18:05

What a beautiful boy! Has he been wormed recently?

I think they all did tbf. Hard to found a pouch bigger than 85g.
whiskers did it before felix.

When mine did this, it turned out she was pregnant. Could it be that she has been self-identifying as a male all this time?

Could happen.

We just don't know how a cat's mind works...

He has always been on a rotation of four brands and always had a sachet each at breakfast and tea and a few bedtime biscuits. I have noticed that Felix is smaller than another brand. Some brands say 3-4 a day. He'd be huge!

Thank you.

Yes. He's up to date with flea and worming treatments and his vaccinations.

Mine are always like this! Thought this was just cats 😅

2025willbemytime · 24/03/2025 19:23

It's the fact it's new that has me concerned @Elisabeth3468 .

Leave a bowl of dry food out at all times for him. If he's genuinely hungry he will graze throughout the day on biscuits.

I was pleased to see that my cat had lost weight, turned out it’s the thyroid. She’s already on medication for something else, fun days ahead…
Perhaps you could see what happens if you give the cat more food for a few weeks?

I can't do that as I have a dog who would eat them. Plus I don't want him getting fat.

Occasionally he gets a bigger meal. It's a balance between keeping him happy and not letting him get huge. I need to see how he goes tomorrow. He's sleeping now. He won't appear until 9 when he'll sit with me until bedtime. Aka biscuit time.

Give him some scrambled egg in the morning to increase his protein if you can't let him graze.

2025willbemytime · 24/03/2025 19:52

I'm not sure what he'd make of scrambled eggs!

Changes of behaviour are always worth noting.
Does he stop complaining if you offer a snack? (I know it's a bad habit 😁)
Is he really hungry or just bored/greedy?
Touch of dementia maybe?
I'd keep an eye on this and maybe contact the vets if it persists/gains or loses weight

wiffin · 24/03/2025 20:00

You need easypill cat putty. If your cat needs pills. It's not cheap, but a packet does a lot of pills. Its a brown sort of squidgy stuff. I wrap a pill in the putty and my cat begs for it.
