Cats do have different body shapes, don't they??

In the same way that some of us (including me, tbh) put on weight easily and others don't, I'm assuming the same is true with cats? Or is one of my cats finding another food source? I've got two and both of them are fed half a sachet of wet food a day, and then I leave down a bowl of dry food for them both to eat - I've not noticed one eating more than the other. The only treat food I do is dreamies - but I'd say that is only 2 or 3 times a week and the same amount to both. Cat one is quite big, has long legs and is the sort of cat who leaps gracefully onto high places. Cat two is quite small, has short legs and quite a chunky body and a really pronounced primordial pouch which swings a bit when she runs. She does not leap gracefully onto high places, but she can get wherever she wants to go! Both have free access to outside and Cat two probably goes out more than Cat one. I'm fairly sure that if I took Cat two to the vet they'd tell me to put her on a diet...

I was told the late Magic was obese. I’m not convinced that she was. She had a large body on little stumpy legs. Persians have ‘Cobby’ bodies that make them look fatter than they actually are.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/03/2025 15:00

She weighed 4.8kg. Compared to Penelope who’s a tiny 2.8kg

Shubbypubby · 23/03/2025 15:01

Some breeds, such as Maine Coons & Ragdolls are bigger framed and more muscular than others. My Ragdoll is a big boy but very lean under his fur.

Shubbypubby · 23/03/2025 15:02

To add- my is almost 12lbs but definitely not overweight.

5.5kg so not that big for a Ragdoll. My deceased Boycat was 5.5kg with a Siamese type build and not overweight at all.

@marmaladeandpeanutbutter very much depends on how tall/long/general build he is. As I said above, Tobias is the same weight roughly as Girlcat but he's much shorter in both height & length (especially his short little legs). Though I do admit he's definitely a bit fat, he's also a much chunkier build than her.

I thought my cat was pretty chunky and he’s only 4.7kg.

This is my 7.5kg boy stood next to a “normal” size cat Grin
you can see how much taller he is

I had two litter sisters and food was freely available 24/7. Throughout their long lives, one was a slim cat and the other was considerably heavier (a little bit chubby.)

I have two litter brothers. Fed the same.

they look very similar, but one weighs loads more than the other. One is very small. Personality’s are completely different too.

Don't forget that cats are one of those animal who can have different fathers to kittens in the same litter!

Shubbypubby · 23/03/2025 22:56

@Allergictoironing no I know, some Ragdoll males are huge!

Jux · 23/03/2025 23:00

We have neutered brothers, about atwo years old now. They get the amount of food but one is sleek and one is fat (dh insists he's big boned). The fat one is much more laid back and easy going. They are both really stupid (for cats) but lovely! Very different animals both physically and psychologically.

totallyfedup · 23/03/2025 23:06

I have 4 cats, two siblings utter chonks, always hungry, Boy cat1 is a typical ginger, big and soppy at his largest he was 7.6kg. Girl cat is a tortie chonk she was 6kg. Both are on diets and I have bought microchip feeders to stop them stealing the thin cats food.

Boy cat 3 is the supermodel of cats a mini black panther with fur of black silk, he doesn’t have a spare ounce on him, he must eat exactly what he needs, he’s 6kg but long and lean. Boy cat 4 is 5kg but an ideal weight too but more compact than Boy cat 3. Both aren’t that interested in food unlike the first two who act like they haven’t been fed in a week. Even if DH has just given them breakfast ginge will try and scam me into feeding him another one.

Zofloramummy · 23/03/2025 23:10

I have two sisters (litter mates) one is long haired, short but broad boned and chubby she weighs 5kg, her sister is tiny, short haired and thin boned, she weighs under 3kg. She is also a brilliant hunter whereas she sister only ‘catches’ feathers and elastic bands!

My male cat (not related) is massive, he is twice the height of tiny cat and very long. He weighs 6kg. The vets wanted him to go on a diet but he gets cystitis if he doesn’t eat wet food, and it is hard to limit access to dry when you have three cats! He doesn’t really have a fat tummy and I can feel all his ribs so I’m ignoring the advice.

totallyfedup · 23/03/2025 23:22

@Zofloramummy Boycat1 aka fat ginge gets cystitis too he gets two tins of untamed a day and the rest Royal Canin Urinary Dry (Moderate Calorie weighed out) it’s a nightmare when you have multiple cats trying to get them on diets but the microchip feeders have been great, they are expensive at over £100 each but the skinny cats eat from them fine. Fat ginge is always trying to find a way to break into them too 😀 just as well he is the most gorgeous loving cat ever, he’s cost me a fortune.

RobinEllacotStrike · 24/03/2025 05:45

@Allergictoironingi never knew that about cats! 🐈‍⬛ 🐈‍⬛

Allergictoironing · 24/03/2025 08:01

@totallyfedup Your Boy cat 3 sounds just like my Boycat was - tall, long, lean, silky short hair. I've attached my favorite pic of him, please note that he is lying on his left legs, the 3rd appendage to the left of the picture is his tail which would touch the ground with him standing up if it wasn't held up!

Exactly the same as my cats but when you pick them up, slim cat one [male] is really heavy and round cat two [female] is really light which isn't what you'd expect.

OK you want a pic of Girlcat's new companion Tobias, the opposite build to her and Boycat RIP?

He has very short little legs, short little nose, short tail, and very chonky!

Below one of the only photos of the four together think I’m missing a tabby or a calico???

To be fair, you do have a silver tabby. Which means you need a brown tabby, ideally with white for contrast. But that also means that as the cat furthest to the right in your pic is a tabby, you also need a blue.

And where's the Tuxedo???

totallyfedup · 25/03/2025 07:45

@Allergictoironing yes definitely need one with some white/brown tabby in there and a calico to add to my crazy cat lady collection 🤣 they are all rescues having had rough starts in life the black one was born outside in a garden, someone very kindly dumped the ginger/tortie ones in labour mum on a farm! All from the same rescue I support so maybe another wee sob story will need rescuing soon (fingers crossed)
