Stopping DCat massacring bees

Last year we spent a lot of dosh creating a wildlife-friendly garden. Now the flowers are out, DKitten is having a whale of a time chasing and eating the bees. He has a bell collar to help birds, but what can I do for the bees? He's eaten at least 5 this morning and I rescued another shell-shocked bumblebee from the doormat this morning. Help!

Sorry I don't have any advice, but hopefully it's only a matter of time before he gets stung (sorry I know that sounds harsh!) and he decides he doesn't want to do that again.

My cat disturbed a wasps nest once and got stung on her nose. She didn't bother wasps or bees after that.

HelpMeGetThrough · 21/03/2025 14:16

The only way the little bugger is going to stop, is if he gets stung I reckon.

Cats are like naughty kids, never do what their told!! 🤣

I do love a cat.

NotDarkGothicMama · 21/03/2025 17:39

Alright, so smother the cat in honey and wait for a yowl 😂

At the moment I think bees are likely to still be quite sleepy and slow. If you wanted you could put out a bowl of sugar water to help them get going a bit faster. (as long as the kitten won't drink it. Give it a few weeks and i think they'll be much harder to catch.

NotDarkGothicMama · 21/03/2025 17:52

That's a good shout, I can mix up some nectar for them. The kitten's not neutered yet so is on a lead and closely supervised outside so I can keep him away from it.

Ooh what type of cat do you have? Looks well cute!

NotDarkGothicMama · 21/03/2025 22:10

He's a Siberian cat and a very handsome fellow.

Nice anemones too! (sp?)

We need a better picture

Thankyou! They've been blooming over the winter but really come out nicely in the past week or so.

Better picture of the hunter cat.

What a gorgeous boy.!

NotDarkGothicMama · 25/03/2025 17:01

Thankyou! He was neutered today so the bees are safe for the next 10 days while he has to stay inside. He's not pleased with the cone!

He's adorable, even if he is a serial killer :)

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 27/03/2025 22:11

Not rain on your parade but I have a 10-year-old Siberian and she's still obsessed with hunting buzzy flying creatures...

bringonyourwreckingball · 27/03/2025 22:13

My little ginger puss is a menace for the bees and moths. I think it is partly the light at this time of year, it should get better.

Treadlightlyonmysoul · 27/03/2025 22:18

Our ginger cat used to love eating bluebottles. He’d hold them in his mouth, I think they were his version of fizzy sweets.

NotDarkGothicMama · 28/03/2025 07:34

Bluebottles would be more helpful. I pointed him at a large spider the other day and he couldn't have been less bothered.

@JohnLapsleyParlabane has your Sib ever been stung?

OP posts:
JohnLapsleyParlabane · 28/03/2025 07:40

@NotDarkGothicMama luckily no. She's indoor/catio only where bees sort of pass through. I think if she ever went in the flowerbed she'd probably end up at the vet with a giant swollen face

Facecream24 · 28/03/2025 07:52

One of mine has brought in two bees but alive! Carried in dangling by one of their legs and yowling for attention in a look what I’ve got sort of way😂. No idea why they haven’t stung him. Managed to rescue one of them. Sorry doesn’t answer your question but you’re not alone with the bee catcher.

Spicy sky raisins!

NotDarkGothicMama · 28/03/2025 08:20

He escaped from both types of cone stocked by the vet so I got him a bee version from Amazon. No escapes so far!

My cat patted a big bumble bee in the garden the other day and ended the day with a big fat front paw which looked very funny but I didn’t take a photo of it. She wasn’t limping and it was normal size in the morning. She was back out patting the bees today, so no lessons learned here.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 28/03/2025 18:30

He's a gorgeous fellow 😍
I also have a bee-catcher who is nearly seven but is fascinated with all buzzy creatures.

NotDarkGothicMama · 29/03/2025 07:31

Back to his old tricks. The bees are speeding up though: I just watched one escape after he'd caught it. He ate a fly last night too, so hopefully his tastes are expanding.
