Ridiculous things we do for our cats

We adopted our two girls from a local rescue last April. They are very loved - and very spoiled.
Example:

Every morning I make my bed as soon as I wake up, and spread a special purple blanket at the foot (not too close to the end though as our calico girl doesn't always have the best spatial awareness and has rolled off a couple of times.)

I then open the window blinds and draw the curtains back so that there is a small gap of about 1 foot (the width of a cat who 'could easily become tubby' - Vet).

At this point, I usually hear scratching at the door and loud meowing, and I have to let the Empress of Floof into the room. She first spends about 20 minutes chattering at the pigeons in a large oak tree from her special position on the window sill behind the curtain. Note that if the curtains are opened too wide she refuses to jump up and cries until they are adjusted to her required width.

After threatening the pigeons she then jumps onto the bed, makes biscuits on the purple blanket, or rolls around showing off her fluffy belly for me to admire, and eventually settles down for the first of her naps.

She does this every day. On days when I leave early for work, I have to leave the room prepared for her (or she cries according to my adult DD who works from home).

My DH seems to think that this is all ridiculous and that I am indulging her. I think I am merely ensuring that the Empress's needs are met.

But actually he's right and the bloody cat rules the household. While all this is going on, her sister just scampers in and out of the catio chattering at the birds. She is very low maintenance.

Please tell me I am not alone in doing daft things for the family cats?

I would love to get rid of the drawers next to the window in the sitting room but they're the same height as the sill, his basket fits on them perfectly and he loves lying there looking out of the window

I was ridiculous with DBoycat1. I'd be thinking what to make for dinner and then think what he'd have. He loved roast meats, fish and chippy tea. Often he ate better than I. Even though you are not supposed to as he became sick he'd have a little milk because I thought it would soothe him. I bought him a variety of treats, some he liked, some he refused to even try.

I bought lots of toys and blankets and he never once played with or used them. He loved a fresh bed and he'd wait for it to climb on and sometimes goose me into doing it faster. Despite having a cat flap he'd bang on the front door to walk through so we'd open the back door rather than walk around.

We loved him so.

Best thing about this thread is you all make me feel normal. Thank you! 😁😁😁😁😁

Just went up to shut the blinds and curtains in my bedroom. The blind is now only half down, only one curtain is closed. My cat is on the windowsill looking out...

No,you are not daft for doing these things! My cat won't eat her food unless she sees me preparing it. She has to be sitting there waiting for me to put the plate down to actually eat it. I can't put it down if she's in another room because for some reason, she then won't eat it!

Diningtableornot · 18/02/2025 17:50

Who is suggesting that there's a problem here? Seems reasonable that the cat should expect her curtains to be set a certain width apart. Failing to adjust them properly would be like me refusing to fetch a kitchen chair to work on when the cat is asleep on my typing chair.

I love reading these 😁
I have 2 sister cats. Realistically my life revolves around them!

My living room is half a living room, half cats play room with the tree, various cat toys, play tunnels, a decorated cardboard box i bought especially, as i was not having any old amazon box lying around forever!

I'm not allowed to shut any doors ever. Especially the bathroom door. I don't really like showers so have a bath most days and at least one will jump onto the edge of the bath while I'm in there.

They actually never meow for food but will meow for attention constantly. They also have this habit of sitting on my lap, then they'll hear adult DS coming down the stairs and jump off, run to him meowing as if they're the most neglected cats in the world! So devious. But i wouldn't have them any other way!

My boys only drink water from a dedicated teacup on the sidetable beside my chair. Divos. Or is that divi?

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 18/02/2025 18:57

I have to pull up my living room, bedroom and French door blinds every morning so her view, wherever she chooses is unimpeded by slats. 🙄

We were pretty happy with two old girls but were investigating getting a boy 'to look after them' (really???? really really really that was why?? huh) and somehow ended up with two brothers, with whom the girls don't get on - especially with one of them - but it's a long story.

We will spend ages arranging a box on a chair 'just so' for the really stupid boy to play in (yes he'll fall off and we will laugh) but he enjoys it so much we have to keep his special box and each time it gets destroyed travel anywhere and everywhere to try to find another of similar dimensions. I will even buy stuff online I don't need because it comes in the right sized box. That is phenomenallys tupid of me but has to be done or he cries.

One of hte girls dores dh and if he goes out too long she will becomes so unhappy and agitated that I have felt forced to text him, and he has actually come home earlier just for her.

The other girl is my most beautiful ever void. I will sit on the floor with her for ages which is hard for me due to disability and difficulty in getting up from there. Will do it getting colder and colder and in more and more pain because she's so soft and purry and happy.

Just remembered how one of my cats long since gone used to only eat if we kept him company.
He wasn't remotely nervous or anxious, just loved us and believed mealtimes were social occasions...all those hours I must have spent standing in the kitchen while he ate 😄
He used to keep me company while I ate too though 🥰

My girl likes me to watch her eat too. If I get up from my chair she immediately runs towards her dish and looks over at me to make sure I’m following. Then she purrs as she eats while looking up to see if I’m still there. Funny little thing.

We used to eat with DBoycat1 as well! He used to come running at mealtimes so he could be first.

With both our boys we've never had privacy. I've gone from my DC interrupting me having a wee to cats doing it. I may never have a wee on peace ...

I've just spent some time today discussing with DBoycat2 whether or not we should add to his name because he looks like a teddy bear.

2025willbemytime · 20/02/2025 16:14

My cat shouts at me not only if I don't wee fast enough but if I even go for one..

QueenSmartypants · 23/02/2025 23:57

It's midnight and I'm lying on an unmade bed, fresh sheets next to me, with damp hair because I'm waiting for Treasured Cat to wake up from her evening snuggle next to me.

I'd really like to go to sleep but can't bring myself to disturb her 😳

Strawbsss · 24/02/2025 00:26

I put the electric blanket on for the cat 🥴

Gotback · 24/02/2025 00:35

The Empress of our house will tap on the catflap (it's just a door knocker isn't it?) until we open the door. She will wait about 10 seconds until she taps again. I once tried to stop my husband answering the door, to see how many times she would knock, but he caved after 5 saying I was an awful catmum.
