Ridiculous things we do for our cats

We adopted our two girls from a local rescue last April. They are very loved - and very spoiled.
Example:

Every morning I make my bed as soon as I wake up, and spread a special purple blanket at the foot (not too close to the end though as our calico girl doesn't always have the best spatial awareness and has rolled off a couple of times.)

I then open the window blinds and draw the curtains back so that there is a small gap of about 1 foot (the width of a cat who 'could easily become tubby' - Vet).

At this point, I usually hear scratching at the door and loud meowing, and I have to let the Empress of Floof into the room. She first spends about 20 minutes chattering at the pigeons in a large oak tree from her special position on the window sill behind the curtain. Note that if the curtains are opened too wide she refuses to jump up and cries until they are adjusted to her required width.

After threatening the pigeons she then jumps onto the bed, makes biscuits on the purple blanket, or rolls around showing off her fluffy belly for me to admire, and eventually settles down for the first of her naps.

She does this every day. On days when I leave early for work, I have to leave the room prepared for her (or she cries according to my adult DD who works from home).

My DH seems to think that this is all ridiculous and that I am indulging her. I think I am merely ensuring that the Empress's needs are met.

But actually he's right and the bloody cat rules the household. While all this is going on, her sister just scampers in and out of the catio chattering at the birds. She is very low maintenance.

Please tell me I am not alone in doing daft things for the family cats?

We made the mistake of thinking the Lakeland heated airer was for clothes, turns out it's for warm cat naps and lazing on whilst she watches the squirrels and wood pigeons from the utility room.

I can’t believe you were that stupid not to know that!
For goodness sake it’s not a clothes dryer how stupid can you be.

I have a 4yo and 6 month old kitten.

On my office day I get up at 6am 'to spend time with the cats' before I leave at 9.30.

I haven't got it in me to close the bedroom door at night so I hear all nightly play. The kitten is very vocal and there is constant chirping and chatter during the night. It is as though he is talking to himself and commenting on every move he makes. When I get up for a wee under no circumstances must I make eye contact or it is game over.

I do prepare my bed a certain way the older cat likes. My kitchen table is a giant cat bed with a fleece blanket on top. Older cat likes to spread out there.

I respond to requests to open this or that cupboard all day long.

The only boundary I have is that I clean the litter boxes as soon as I get up, before serving breakfast, as I hate when they start doing their biz and I have to wait for it to clump. Everything else is on their terms.

I know, I know, we are foolish and simple slaves, thank you for the kind and restrained admonishing.fortunately our girl was similarly kind and forgiving, especially when we offered my favourite pashmina for extra padded comfort.

My big fluffy rescue has her own pillow. Paces up and down till I make the bed and put her extra fluffy blanket on for her. The other one will yell outside the closed toilet door until you open it then she will cuddle you 😳 I have four mad moggies and they all have their little quirks..... but I wouldn't be without them. We spent a frantic hour looking for one earlier..... my sons were looking around the house for him. Checked in the wardrobes, airing cupboard, rattling treat packs. Normally he comes running at the sound....no sign anywhere. Sons were getting very worried..... *** Cat was on a dining chair fast asleep!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Literally the last place we looked 🤣🤣 all hail the furry overlord 🤣

We also have one who hides on dining chairs!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/02/2025 23:48

I went out with shit hair the other day because our cat was sleeping on our bed, and he doesn’t like the noise of the hairdryer.

Every night after dinner, we “do Brush”. Brush started as a bid to get him to trust me when we adopted him last April. Now he wants Brush as soon as he hears the dishwasher being stacked. Regardless of what else I need to do, it has to wait until after Brush, or he shouts at me. After Brush he gets two Dreamies, so maybe it’s actually those he wants, but I am the Brush Lady and will be forever.

My new boy (I will always think of him as new boy!) is quite laid back. He must have belly rubs when he asks which is most of the day. And I have to lift up the duvet so he can sleep underneath it, wedged against me

Old boy on the other hand...
refused to eat all dry food
Must be offered all dairy products, and allowed to eat jacket potato with beans and cheese. Also to mug you for pork scratchings
Insisted the neighbours water feature was his personal drinking fountain to the point they worried he was dehydrated when it broke and came to tell me they had ordered a new one next day delivery
Had to be towel dried when he came in from the rain
Had to be given endless head kisses and head bumps and gazed at me all day long

My cat won't eat unless she sees me preparing her food. So if she is already out then comes in, I have to go through the rigmarole of pretend mashing her food with a fork before presenting it to her. If it's already down she just won't eat it. Also she needs to say thank you by head butting my hand which is always very cute ❤️

This. And also I have a bowl in the bath because that's the only place he will drink his water from. The water bowl next to his food bowl in the kitchen is totally ignored.

Semiramide · 09/02/2025 00:49

I've put off hoovering and changing the bed because the cat was asleep near by or on it

I am horrified astounded that any cat owner servant would even consider creating such noise or inconvenience when them who need to be obeyed are resting!! 🙀

I'm still in the doghouse due to roofing work at our apartment building as SWNTBO won't accept that I have no control over this...

2025willbemytime · 09/02/2025 07:54

Mine shouted at me at 7.15 for breakfast again so I think this is my forever waking up time now. I'm so tired. No slow waking and reading in bed for a bit while my very good dog lies next to me until I'm ready anymore.

Bjorkdidit · 09/02/2025 08:06

I work flexible hours but we have core time until 4 pm so when I WFH I make them wait until this time for food. They know what the time is and if it goes a minute past 4, even I am in the middle of something, they start pestering me, making it impossible to continue working until I've fed them.

We've thought about buying a heated clothes airer and have seen one in Costco that has 3 racks divided by a central bit.

Each time we see it we discuss whether it is sturdy enough to take the weight of all 6 of them. We haven't bought it because we think not and, as well as not being any use as a heated airer with a load of cats all over the washing, it's our one act of rebellion against our feline overlords.

The cats are calling the RSPCA as we speak..

Toddlerteaplease · 09/02/2025 09:02

Only one of mine has ever acted like a diva. Maia used to like the duvet folded back in a particular way, or she wouldn't get on the bed. All the others have been pretty easy going!

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 09/02/2025 09:18

I recently bought a lovely blanket for my old boy for my bed. I havnt been able to change my bed though since it arrived because he is asleep on it all the time.
To be fair though we have form for pandering to animals in this household. My partner cuts up chicken for the old fox who is missing most of her teeth. She has been visiting us for years, she is very gentle and lovely and well fed.

Cats don’t like their water next to their food, you always need to keep them separately.

I LOVE how you and your partner care for an
old fox, bless you. Wish more people had that level of compassion for foxes…

Ironfloor269 · 09/02/2025 10:37

My cat has to be fed yoghurt from a spoon. If you puts some on to a saucer, he refuses to eat it. It MUST be spoon fed. He waits patiently when I make my morning coffee, for a bit of milk. He will stands near the fridge but as soon as I open the door, the mewing starts. Until I pour a bit of milk onto a saucer and feeds it to him. Again, I have hold to saucer up to him, there’s no placing it on the floor.

I don't suppose you are able to pay any fox tax?

What a lovely thing to do.

Full marks to your neighbours. Made me quite emotional. 🥹

@2025willbemytime she knocked on and said "is Ollie home?"
Me "yes..."
Her "ok well can you tell him the new water feature is coming tomorrow? And I'm sorry it broke"
Me Confused "I can... he does have water here!"
Her "yes but he likes paddling in it"
Ollie "suckers"

I made these for our car as she got too old / lazy to jump on the bed.

Ridiculous things we do for our cats
Bjorkdidit · 09/02/2025 11:59

I'm sitting here with my 17 YO tortie white on my lap and I've just turned the screen away from her because if she sees that, she'll be telling me that @weathervane1's cat has bed stairs and now she wants them too and it's sooooo unfair if she doesn't get them.

Even though she's the sprightliest 17 YO cat in existence, chases after the youngsters and even the vet says that if he hadn't seen her every year since she was a kitten he'd put her at close to a decade younger.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 09/02/2025 12:12

@Ironfloor269
We are aggressively pro fox in this household. My partner though is next level. She has a very "big" job in real life but I always say she is wasted doing it because she can literally recognise all the foxes and tell them apart. Even fox researchers struggle with this,(I read fox research to stay informed.)
She could really add to our knowledge of urban fox behaviour. Maybe when she retires she can do some proper work!

Catandsquirrel · 09/02/2025 12:24

When they complain I am taking my essential meds first in a morning rather than putting out their food or opening the door, I find myself explaining Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to them, again.

One has his own drinking glass, the other permanent use of the yoga mat. The Lakeland heated airer comfortably takes our two big lads

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 09/02/2025 12:53

I won't vacuum a room if my cat is sleeping in it.
