Siamese cats - what is the breed like?

I'm considering getting a cat of the breed in the near future.

Has anyone got any experiences pro or con that they would like to share before we decide?

The absolute best characters ever!! An addiction- once you have Siamese, you will never want to be without!

AndyAnderson · 04/02/2025 23:13

Noisy buggers. Gorgeous though. Friendly.

sorechalfonts · 04/02/2025 23:14

I grew up with them, they’re quite an unusual breed to have these days at least I don’t know anyone with them. They’re so NOISY but so adorable and a bit bonkers from what I remember, very affectionate and once your their ‘person’,that’s it, very light and slender and lithe and love hanging round your neck like a scarf….and snuggling up in bed under the covers, and also very beautiful, I remember all ours growing up, my mum loved them, and so I have fond memories. ❤️ ours always seemed intelligent as well

ChristmasRager · 04/02/2025 23:15

Gorgeous! Such personalities - the very best xx

Everyone sounds quite positive so far :). I'm sorry I can't see your photo :(

Does anyone know if they are a dog friendly breed? Dog is cat friendly and used to cats.

Sorry yes it’s not attached …..it’s such an old pic but I remember him so well . I can’t say anything about dogs as we never had a dog ever. Strictly cat people 🐱

QuackersQuestion · 04/02/2025 23:33

We have always had dogs when we had Meezers, and had no problems, they would even snuggle together.

Meezers are the absolute best. I hope to have them again in the future, just life events in the way right now. Once you have loved one, you will never want to be without. They have something extra compared to other cats. But they do have a way of letting you know how they feel about things! And they are definitely loud and chatty.

sorechalfonts · 04/02/2025 23:36

Maybe works this time ❤️

howrudeforme · 04/02/2025 23:36

my childhood cat was half Siamese. She has the Siamese shape and voice. Slender but powerful.

super intelligent. Very loud (very). Outdoors was hugely territorial (took on an Alsatian) hated vets (was banned from one) but loved our family. If a door was open would jump on it and settle.

my father left us. A few years later she went to live with him but peed in his shoe as revenge.

I want one again now.

so characterful.

JaceLancs · 04/02/2025 23:47

Very noisy I flat shared with BF who had a Siamese - I had a tabby moggy - they were the best of friends!
I couldn’t cope with the yowling and general chattiness! I don’t mind needy kitties just not noisy ones lol

itstrue · 04/02/2025 23:56

I have a Siamese and an oriental. Same cat just different coat colours.

One loves our dog and spends hours playing with her the other one hates her with a passion!

They are the most fun cats I've ever had and I'll never have another breed of cat. I love the talking - they are very loud!

They are really smart and get bored easily. And yes once a Siamese loves you you are in no doubt that they do!

socialdilemmawhattodo · 05/02/2025 00:08

Grew up with them, so of course, after divorce, the only type of cat I could have was a glorious Siamese. I chose to rescue, so 1st came to me at 3. Fully house trained, gorgeous with humans and children, but it took me a long time to realise just how much he hated other cats! He had lost an eye as a kitten from another cat. He ruled the neighbourhood tightly. Only after he sadly died from cancer did I find out that all of my neighbours had cats that were too terrified to leave their own gardens!

No.s 2 & 3 are indoor only rescues. Not ideal, really. I would never do that again. We have a ramshackle catio, but it changes the household dynamic. Not related, adopted at different times, and totally different in personalities. The older a soft boy until we adopted his almost similar age sister, who had been food starved. They are so different. Both about 6. He seems like an old man, whereas she is playful and lively. He shouts at us about anything and is very stressed about leaving us, eg to go to the vets. She squeaks at us and hassles for food/ steals food all day.

Tumbleweed101 · 05/02/2025 00:10

It is sounding great. We are planning on getting a kitten and my daughter (16) has been asking if we can consider a Siamese so I’ve been researching the last couple days to make sure it will fit our family. It’s lovely hearing so many positive stories. I already have a ‘chatty’ dog so a chatty cat wouldn’t be out of place lol. This is likely to be my last cat (assuming full life span) due to my age so it would be nice to have a change from a moggy. It sounds like the are people focused which is good and I’ve read they don’t shed too much when compared to rag dolls and similar.

Our son has brother and sister Siamese and they are fabulous characters and love everybody .

taleforthetimebeing · 05/02/2025 00:59

We had a Siamese called Nicholas when I was a child. He was a wonderful cat. I have 2 dogs now but would definitely welcome a Siamese into my home. Also he wasn’t noisy but was very affectionate. He was beautiful.

BeaAndBen · 05/02/2025 01:04

So loud! They talk all the time. I really liked the neighbours’ Siamese but I could hear him through brick walls.

He could also open doors by launching himself at the handle and worked out the trick to the “baby-proof” kitchen cupboard lock that was supposed to stop him stealing treats. Very smart cat.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 05/02/2025 03:40

They are the most fabulous cats. I’ve had five over 45 years. They were without exception loving, smart and just generally gorgeous. They are such characters. Mine lived with three German Shepherds and loved to snuggle with them.

RamsestheDamned · 05/02/2025 04:15

Mine is half Siamese and so very different to my other moggies! She very much needs me, as in needs to be "on" me at every given opportunity and if I’m busy around the house for too long she'll cry for me to sit down and cuddle her, I'm her person. It's so nice to be needed! She does tricks we haven't even had to teach her. Very clever but also needs ongoing training to stop her destroying wallpaper etc, had her from 12 weeks old and still not quite a year old. The sheer amount of affection is bloody lovely.

TanginaBarrons · 05/02/2025 04:27

We have a tonkinese (half Siamese and half Burmese) and he is the love of our family's life. He is total velcro, devoted to everyone, noisy and unbelievably affectionate - like a goofy, silky teddybear. He tolerates any amount of cuddling/holding/mauling from my young daughter and is passionate about my mum's dog.

Tonkinese will bond with anyone - he jumps on visitor's laps the minute they sit down (which can be problematic if they are not sure about cats) whereas siamese are more one person cats.

He has that oriental cat yowl which annoys my husband and manages to be greedy and fussy at the same time. Steals food. Highly recommend!

Admin have suspended posting pictures temporarily or i would bore you with photos 😉

LunaTheCat · 05/02/2025 04:51

I absolutely adore them.. beautiful creatures.. they live cuddles, they have “their” person. I love the way they talk.
i have an elderly Burmese.. lively but just not quite the same.

MissHollysDolly · 05/02/2025 05:12

When the kids were little ours would go into their rooms when they were napping and yowl - completely impersonating the baby's cry, so I'd hear on the baby alarm and rush up. He just wanted a cuddle and it got me every time. Clever, affectionate, alpha male.
The (large) dog was terrified of him.

onceuponatimelived · 05/02/2025 05:26

Watch the Disney move the lady and the tramp! 🤣

SabrinaThwaite · 05/02/2025 06:44

Mine is currently lying on me, as she’s got older she’s become even more of a Velcro cat (which I didn’t think was possible - wave goodbye to ever going to the loo on your own again). She’s loud, affectionate and ridiculously clumsy, loves all the family and has a range of quirks - likes playing fetch and is obsessed with stealing things and hiding them under rugs.

Once you’ve had a Siamese it’s very hard to be without one.

NoraLuka · 05/02/2025 06:55

Our neighbour has one who sits outside making a weird noise until our cat comes out. Then they sit face to face with the Siamese howling (don’t know if that’s the right word? It’s not meowing anyway!) and our cat tries to do the same thing but can’t. The Siamese is super elegant and our cat is a chunky ginger moggy so they make a strange pair but they do seem to be best buddies!
