Adopted a cat!

Adopted a cat today. She’s already quite confident, jumping on sofa, exploring, interacting with us, rolling over and purring. She seems very friendly. Still hiding at times which I expected also but she’s mainly coming out to see us. Any tips of how to help her settle please and I’ve shown her where the litter tray. Any tips to help her go there?

She's lovely! Love her whiskers. The white smudge on her nose! Gorgeous.

What's her name?
She'll find her way to her tray just leave the doors open.

Thank you! She is called Storm. She had a sister called Skye but she had already been rehomed. She seems to love fusses

Hello Storm! I love the little bits of ginger/ tortie in her coat. Is she coming on to your sofa or chair for cuddles?
Mine loves a fleece blanket.

She is yes! She was out the carrier and exploring straight away. Hiding in between but mainly sitting with us or looking around.

Aww beautiful ❤️

Great that she’s already out & confident!

If she only arrived today, and she knows where the litter tray is, I wouldn’t worry too much yet. Although one of my fosters decided to live behind my bedside table for 2 days, and I ended up covering the carpet in newspaper & putting the litter tray and her food & water bowls in there too. Once she felt ready to come out, they gradually moved to their proper places.

Most cats love cardboard boxes to play in & rub against, & I recommend leaving her carrier out somewhere permanently & giving her treats in there every so often. It makes life far easier when you need to take her to the vet.

Mine found a little cloth bag and carried around when we weren't around, maybe like a comfort blanket, so maybe a few soft things (don't have to be bought!).

glassof · 25/01/2025 17:34

Sounds like she is doing amazing. She is beautiful

Chillis888 · 25/01/2025 17:38

I rescued my gorgeous car 6 years ago. Did her Foster mum tell you if she's litter trained as that will help you know how much work she'll need figuring out her toilet. For mine, the advice was every time she starts to go to the toilet pick her up and put her in the litter tray so she learns the association. Didn't take long at all. Just have to be vigilant and keep an eye in first few days.

Hi everyone soone so she’s currently on top of the kitchen cupboards! Is this normal? This is the first time I’ve owned a cat!

My main advice is to use Cats Best Original Clumping Litter - it's like little woodchips/sawdust and it's the best I've used. Doesn't stink, masks the smell of wee and poo, and lasts a long time as easy to scoop out the clumps.

Enjoy your new cat friend!

AlisonDonut · 25/01/2025 18:16

I'd get her a cardboard box, and just let her find her way round the house.

Completely normal. You'll find she perches in lots of high places - they like to survey their domain from on high!

CharBart · 25/01/2025 18:20

We rehomed our cat just over a week ago. We were advised by the rescue to give her a private space as a base, so we put her in the spare room and let her into the rest of the house after a couple of days when she was ready to explore. Their leaflet said they will seek out quiet corners including high up so I think that is normal!

Hazel665 · 25/01/2025 18:23

Yes normal, they're basically mini leopards, and leopards love to sleep in trees!

She's gorgeous.

murraymcgill · 25/01/2025 18:23

@Sunflower889 sounds like she's done that herself and she's so cute

Well there's you first mistake - you don't "own" a cat, the cat owns you as you've signed up for a life of voluntary slavery.

EmpressaurusKitty · 25/01/2025 20:06

Kitty was only meant to stay until she got adopted.

I’m never going to know for sure which of us decided she’d moved in permanently.

So, she loves rolling over for tummy rubs, she has used the litter tray! She seems to love her food.. she seems quite content and relaxed already. She's back on top of the kitchen cupboard sleeping

She's doing really well - obviously she's a confident cat and trusting of you, which is brilliant. Some cats don't come out of hiding for a week or more, for context.

RainingCatsandFoxes · 25/01/2025 22:17

If she's happy on the cupboard I would leave her there. Shes happy that is amazing so early on. That's a good thing. Maybe try a feliway plug in that produces cat happy hormones. Otherwise carry on what you are doing. The cat definitely owns you, no mistake....
