The handhold I never wanted to need

Lost my beautiful ginger menace. Can't find him anywhere. 12h gone now, he followed me out the house when I went to work. Nobody has seen him and he hasn't been on the door camera all day.

Crying my eyes out. He's only 18m old.

Handhold please?

Handhold incoming. Don't give up hope - go out, walk around shaking a Dreamies bag. Put his litter tray out overnight, and if I remember correctly, something with his (or your) scent on it. Most of all - dont give up hope.

GoodVibesHere · 21/01/2025 19:52

Awww I'm keeping everything crossed that he comes back very soon. It's awful when they go on a big wander. I guess you've tried the usual calling his name, rattling a bag of dreamies etc. Have you been up and down the street?

Climbinghigher · 21/01/2025 19:55

Don’t give up. My elderly cat was missing for 7 days recently. In storms and really cold weather. I honestly thought she was gone. We spoke to neighbours, put out a Facebook advert on local missing cat pages & she turned up in someone’s kitchen. Their neighbour knew from our neighbour that our cat was missing and they were able to get in contact with us.

Put used litter or bedding outside - the smell can help apparently.

Talk to neighbours & use Facebook.

You can also mark his chip as missing.

Hope he turns up soon.

Been out for last 2 hours walking streets and shouting. No sign of him. Vet hasn't got him. I'm terrified he's been catnapped.

Is he a Maine Coon? Does he normally go out?
If he's not used to going out he may well be very close and just too scared to emerge. In which case you might have more luck in the early hrs when it's very quiet 🤞🏻

LittleGreenDragons · 21/01/2025 20:12

Don't panic yet.

He followed you out as you went to work so there is a good possibility he wandered around until he found another open door as a neighbour went to work. Now he's hiding under their bed or behind the sofa thinking this house smells funny. When he's brave enough to come out of hiding they will either let him out the door or take him for a vet chip check. I hope he comes home soon Flowers

Motherrr · 21/01/2025 20:13

Aww I'm sorry. Its worse than knowing something bad has happened, the not knowing :( BUT 12 hours is a relatively short time - lots of kitties go missing for a bit and return. Hoping he will be back soon xxx

Heronatemygoldfish · 21/01/2025 20:55

Yes maine coon. Much wanted kitten but impossible to keep indoors as have 2 moggies. I don't know what to do now. Wait for morning and hope.

Do you have a catflap he can come in if he returns during the night? Does he know how to use the catflap?

He won't have gone far, I'm sure. It's horrible, the waiting.

GustyGertie · 21/01/2025 21:31

My cat was missing for 4 days and he was accidentally locked in a neighbours garage 4 doors away. I walked the streets night after night calling him and put out posters and flyers. One day he heard me and called back! I had thought the worst and was hugely relieved.

Try popping round to all the neighbours to ask them to keep an eye out for him. More eyes looking x Hope he's home soon

Peanutssuck · 21/01/2025 23:41

What a beautiful cat. Please keep us updated

Scutterbug · 21/01/2025 23:45

One of my cats went missing for a year. He turned up again a few weeks ago, ate a massive meal and then buggered off again. Little shite. Clearly has another home!

Babycatsmummy · 22/01/2025 00:24

Did he return?! I always fear this with my raggie!! Xx

Heronatemygoldfish · 22/01/2025 07:05

He's back! Came running in for breakfast. Little terror. I am so relieved. I need to sleep now... thank you for hand holding. It's been an awful night.

I'm so glad he's home. What a beautiful cat 💕 I saw your post just now on active, and skipped straight to the end, hoping for a happy update. So relieved for you!

Els1e · 22/01/2025 07:11

Yay! So pleased for you. What stress these wonderfully annoying pals put us through. 🐾

iloveeverykindofcat · 22/01/2025 07:14

OP look into Tractive GPS collars. Not cheap but 1000% worth it. They are light and small, my petite girl has no problem wearing one.

This is the best news. I'm so relieved for you. We had a cat return from a 3 day absence and I think that was the purest joy and elation I've felt in my adult life.
I have Maine coons that are outside cats and I do put tractive trackers on them. They are such big cats they seem to be able to deal with the bulk of them. I worry about the collar aspect of course, but I take them off when they come in at tea time so the release catches are checked daily. This might be something to consider for your lovely boy.

Wheniwas · 22/01/2025 07:36

Wonderful news! I saw this in the early hours and just checked back with my fingers still crossed!

Heronatemygoldfish · 22/01/2025 11:13

He is so grounded!

Awesome news OP!

Definitely ground him. And offer lots of toys and dreamies so he knows where the best place eva! is.

iloveeverykindofcat · 22/01/2025 11:53

@Galliano
Mine have quick release collars for their trackers. To be honest senior girl doesn't need a tracker, she only ever goes around the neighbours, but she's worn one for years and its just for my peace of mind really. I like the health data even though its probably fake. Little crazy one triggered her quick release several times and lost several trackers before I realised that in my care to make sure it wasn't too tight, it was actually too loose, because she is 80% fur 20% body. As long as collars are fitted correctly, I think the risk is less than the risk of not wearing them. She hasn't triggered the catch for a few months now.

Heronatemygoldfish · 22/01/2025 11:55

I'm definitely getting a tracker. I'm getting too old for my blood pressure to cope with losing my cats!
