Do you think of yourself as your cat’s mum?

YourNimbleOchrePoster · 14/01/2025 18:49

I do and I used a surrogate to give birth to my biological cat.
Or do we have some cat mum’s here who actually gave birth to their cats (babies)?

So it sounds like a mix of cats and owners and cats and mums with the owners slightly in the lead.

Yes we are my cat’s mum and dad. I don’t tend to speak about myself in third person but for example would say ‘daddy’s staying home with you today’ and DP would do the same.
It may be cringey but who cares! We love our little boy 😁

SemperIdem · 14/01/2025 19:50

No. Occasionally I wonder if she thinks I am her servant though.

No, but I once had a dream a gave birth to a bald hedgehog.

Yeah, well. We've all had that dream.🙄

MrsDeltaB · 14/01/2025 19:53

I call mine "my boys" purely because I'm a mum of girls (human!) and my cats see me as a tall tin opener! (Read that earlier)

torreli · 14/01/2025 19:53

People on this forum need to lighten up.

They're our lil baby fur baby cutie pie heads.

Simplepink · 14/01/2025 19:58

I’m completely in love with my kitten and definitely call myself and DH mummy and daddy.
we also have an actual human child 🤣

dogwlllwalk · 14/01/2025 20:02

Interesting!
I guess I play the mother role as I feed, supply medical treatment, cuddle , carry around and deal with litter tray.
But cat appears to not be well parented and insists on sleeping in my bad, doesn't respond to being told off and quite honestly can be a brat. so definitely not any biological cat of mine.
He is adopted and adored. I blame his bad behaviour on his birth genetics and early kittenhood experience. His birth mother I believe may have been a snooty disobedient feline also!

Perhaps boss is a better description.

101Kittens · 14/01/2025 20:19

Many years of hand rearing newborn kittens makes me at least a foster mum. No biological cats though they are adopted.
One most likely thinks I am her mum (hand raised from a week old and still suckles for comfort).

They are all freeloaders who treat me like staff and will never move out. Just like the kids, except they may at least possibly leave one day.

Some people insist on their children calling them by their names, others are mummy and daddy to every living dependent.

Rather know a bunch of pet mummies and daddies than the ones who think it's "just" an animal. Guess which ones are the abusers?

MoonKiss · 14/01/2025 20:45

Yes I am his mummy. He usually prefers dad as he’s in the kitchen more and is therefore chief bowl topper upper, but comes to me for eye bogeys and ear scritches and he wouldn’t leave my side when he was poorly recently, so I am clearly main nurse and motherer.

He is absolutely our favourite child.

I know some people call themselves dogmom and catmom which I think is cringe. They normally haven't experienced actual motherhood. I don't view myself as my cats mum, one had a whole litter and is a mum in her own right. I just see myself as their guardian. Mother is dished out lightly, there is nothing like being an actual real mother to an actual child. This is not to negate from others feelings for their pets but its not to negate from actual motherhood which is far more complex. However much you love your pets, you aren't their mother and it doesn't even come close.

Yep I'm a cat mum - haven't got any human kids of my own! Having known my cat's actual mother, I am certainly not like her and didn't push him away 9 weeks after having him! I'll still be there for him if he lives to 20! Joking aside though, of course it's not the same as having a human child, even not having had one, I know that.

But I'm still a cat mum! 😅

Juliagreeneyes · 14/01/2025 21:09

Good grief no, she’s a pet cat!

Not a motherly relationship at all! I love the cat dearly, but she isn’t a substitute child.

No, but I once had a dream a gave birth to a bald hedgehog.

I had that dream when I was pregnant with my first child! Only I could see it was a hedgehog and all the midwives kept complimenting me on a beautiful baby boy and I was freaking out.

Gettingbysomehow · 14/01/2025 23:58

Well I have my two adopted cat daughters and then my biological son also has cats and they are my grandcats. It's complicated.
Inter species relationships are something that can't really be explained.

I have three furbabies and three human ones.

I once dreamed that I breastfed a cat, if that helps, @YourNimbleOchrePoster .
I didn't actually do it...

My mum has a cat. I refer to her as my cat sister.
My mother in law used to have a cat. I called her my cat in law.

hereismydog · 15/01/2025 00:42

I have a newborn human child, three cat children and a dog child. DP and I are ‘Mummy and Daddy’ to all five of them 😂 our vet refers to owners as Mums/Dads, too.

Oh, and my Mum’s cat is my brother. Our sister agrees.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 15/01/2025 02:49

If CatOfHate was remotely comparable to a child, I would be cat-free as well as child-free.

I am his human and he is my cat. Legally, I own him, but in practice, he owns himself.

My Mum used to tell people she had a grandson called Harry if she was ever asked about grandchildren. She just didn't bother mentioning he was a bit furry and had a tail. It all started because some interfering old bag told her how selfish I was not to have children and deprive her of grandchildren. Unfortunately I wasn't there when it was said...

I always referred to her as Nanny Puss after that.

idril · 16/01/2025 15:24

I thought everyone thought of themselves as their cat's mum or dad!

I mean not in the literal sense obviously but and hopefully I don't have to point out that it's a very different relationship than with a real child 😂 but he is definitely my adopted "child". I love him, care for him, worry about him etc.

He is also my children's sibling but to complicate matters, my daughter also likes to think of herself as his mummy. But I am the OG mummy for sure.
