Husband or cat

Any help or advice urgently needed please! We rescued our cats a couple of years ago from a guy who hadn’t spayed his cats and was overwhelmed by kittens. They came unable to use the litter tray. We had a newborn baby and a three year old and, in hindsight, it was a really silly decision to take them on. However, the guy was struggling to even give them away for free and we’d just lost our much loved cat and had a free, large house. I was on maternity leave so thought I could tackle it.

The last 2 years have been a struggle in terms of using the litter tray but they mostly seemed to be getting it right- until this summer. We went away for 10 days and had a cat sitter visit each day. When we got back we realised that the cats had started urinating on the bathroom floor. One cat in particular is weeing outside of the tray and then I think occasionally the other is following suit. This has now sporadically continued. Every week or so I now have to mop up wee, disinfect and steam the floor. my husband began shutting the bathroom door in an attempt to stop this, which at first seemed to work. However, we realised last week that he had weed on the carpet outside of the door.

In the last couple of weeks, this now seems to have ramped up and he is weeing in completely random places. He does seem to be choosing tiled/laminated places for the most part- for example, he weed on the lid of a plastic box in my daughters room and in several of the fireplaces- on the tiles. However, previously he has also weed on our children’s bed sheets, towels and my eldest ds’ book bag.

They have 3 trays at the very end of our double garage- our house is large so we are very far away from them in general. We do try to clean them every other day but if I’m being honest- with 2 very young kids- it can sometimes go a bit longer. However, he has weed in inappropriate places even when the trays are clean. It’s very cold in the garage in winter and they are far away from the rest of the house so I do also wonder if he is just being lazy!

I’ve just come home today and he has weed in the main fireplace. My husband is literally at his wits end. He didn’t really want them in the first place as he was still very much grieving the loss of our first cat. He is very seriously talking about rehoming them if something doesn’t change. I just can’t live with the idea of our cats being in a cage in some shelter somewhere, abandoned. I couldn’t live with myself. The boy who is weeing everywhere is surely unlikely to find a home if they know he isn’t litter trained? He is such a cuddly, lovely cat and amazing with the kids otherwise.

Please any advice would be so appreciated. This is causing so much division in my marriage and is honestly coming between me and my husband. I’ve just booked a vet appointment for tomorrow afternoon- but in the meantime has anyone got any advice? I’ve just cleaned and put out 4 trays for them. We did use felliway plug ins while we were away (when they started weeing on the bathroom floor!)

Also if he's a big cat, are his litter trays big enough for him. My boy cat is a monster and we actually use 2 under bed storage boxes for their litter trays and it means he can actually can in, get comfy and then a good scrabble with the litter once he's done. Girl can is tiny so would fit in anything!

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 14/12/2024 16:59

I’ve also bought a cat litter tray deodoriser for the tray in the bathroom (my husband/family think it’s seriously gross having a tray in the bathroom!) but I’m worried this might throw them off- anyone have any experiences with this?

Thank you @Plump82 I’ll gradually introduce the clumping litter and see if they take to it. That’s also a really good point about the size of the trays! He is really big so maybe not too happy with some of the trays- we have 2 small, one large. I’ve never really noticed if he uses a specific one or not. The one currently in the bathroom isn’t a particularly large one.

How about getting 2 large ones and see how that goes. My old cat was huge as well and it just never occured me to get her a bigger tray and she had real toilet issues which probably could have been helped with a bigger tray.

RandomMess · 14/12/2024 18:06

Sadly cats prefer uncovered litter trays, I haven't had to resort to this yet thankfully but as soon as I take a lid off they line up to use them!!

This one is huge and easy to clean for clumping, nice and deep.

If he is happy with wood pellets there is also the Brit-Pet or similar system where the disintegrated pellets filter into a holding tray underneath.

I found it good but my cats aren't keen on the pellets and it does smell more than the VanCat odour control clumping.

RandomMess · 14/12/2024 18:08

I have tried all the top brands for clumping Cats Best, Worlds Bests, Crystals. Definitely VanCat for odour control - I have a very sensitive sense of smell unfortunately 🙈

Ask your family if it's disgusting they 💩/pee in the bathroom... if it's good enough for them why not the cat? Would they rather have litter trays up in the bedroom!

LizzieBennetsSister · 14/12/2024 18:13

I haven't had a cat for years so maybe out of touch about this, but why on earth have litter trays at all? Cats I have lived with were all trained to go outside. The idea of having a cat lavatory lying around in the house is repulsive imo. What's wrong with training them to go into the great outdoors, using a catflap if you are not at home? People with no outside space should not be keeping cats anyway, as they need to roam.

phoenixbiscuits · 14/12/2024 18:20

After several years I finally managed to convince my cats that the great outdoors was the place to go! I moved the litter trays near the cat flap and put less litter in each time. For the first time in a very long time I've not been exposed to a random 💩 on the floor. It's such a relief tbh. I'd be tempted to find an outdoor litter tray solution personally.

I still have a puppy pad in a litter tray just inside the house that occasionally gets used but I like the balance.

trivialMorning · 14/12/2024 18:26

we have used a urine destroyer solution to clean areas

Absolutely needed every time.

We have two of these Big Box Cat Litter Tray and a smaller tray - and clumping litter is much better - and making sure there is a lot of litter - still need doing at least once a day.

Large Cat Litter Trays - quite a few options for larger cats and multiple cat households.

Personally I was happier with trays in bathrooms - but cats have decide they prefer them in other areas so they always have access - which in toilet areas with closed door didn't all the time - constant whining to open door when you in bath or on toilet was annoying. Flooring we have in toilets/bathrooms are moppable and regularly cleaned.

@selffellatingouroborosofhate so, rather than cleaning every other day, scooping is the way to go? Again, I’m just not sure how to keep on top of this as I’m out of the house for a large chunk of the day. Or do I need to bribe/motivate/nag the husband to do it during the day?

I’ve just put a tray in the bathroom they’ve been using. I’m going to get some feliway collars tomorrow. They are happy and welcome in the house. They love the kids and seek them out.

Catofhate would sooner stab himself in the eye than use the indoor litter tray, so it's hard for me to comment on how to manage a well-used tray. When catofhate has a tummy upset and I end up with a deposit, scooping it out promptly whilst leaving the untouched litter behind seems to keep him happy.

The advice I keep seeing is something like "one tray per cat, plus one". Certainly, extra trays in different rooms will give the cats extra options if DH doesn't feel like getting the rubber gloves on.

Scoop if obvious smell - otherwise scoop before bed every day without fail or other set time.

Try something like BioKitty Clumping Cat Litter use to min amount on packet and after scooping top it up every day. Then once a week or more if possible make sure it get thoroughly tray cleaned - I tend to rotate round the three trays - hot water sun in summertime.

There are cheaper clumping litters but that one tends to last longer so tend to swap to it when away and cats will be clean once a day whatever happens. Haven't tried Cats Best yet though though also like Ever Clean.

Two cat have three trays - but two are on larger side.

Oddly tended to find the Beaphar plugs in more effective than feliway products.

I can’t speak for the OP or anyone else but we have them because we keep our cats in when it’s dark, for their safety and to reduce their impact on wildlife. They prefer to do their business outside but, understandably, they sometimes need to go to the loo whilst they’re indoors. Especially in the winter when they’re shut inside for about 15 hours!

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 15/12/2024 19:35

@LizzieBennetsSister i completely agree! I did not realise how completely spoiled we were with our previous cats who did not need any indoor litter trays. They just used to go outside with no issues! Unfortunately, because the cats we currently have weren’t litter trained at all (until we got them- their mum was clearly just going anywhere/everywhere around this poor man’s house) we had to train them to use the trays. I’m hoping once it’s a bit warmer I can focus more of my efforts on encouraging them to go outside more!

Ask them if there's a difference between you having a shit in the bathroom and the cat having a shit in the bathroom? 😃

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 15/12/2024 19:43

Thank you for this @trivialMorning - literally need a routine like this. I feel like I’ve been a bit of terrible cat owner now! Didn’t realise trays were such an art having previously had cats who used to go outdoors.

I’ve been scooping the trays regularly for the last couple of days and so far, so good. No accidents. The tray in the bathroom still hasn’t been used! Lots of feliway also seems to be helping as he does seem more chilled and has been getting lots of cuddles. Been feeding them more often too as I’ve been sprinkling the cystitis powder onto his food. Will see if the vet rings me tomorrow with any more information on the urine sample!

We used to use a baby bath many years ago! Don't think the covered ones were around at the time?

One cat used to pee really hard and as she peed, she raised her bum, and it went everywhere but the tray! The baby bath was the only thing with sides high enough for her!!

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 15/12/2024 19:45

Also had my mum round- who has the nose of an actual bloodhound- and she has reassured me that the house doesn’t smell of wee! 😅
