Getting a sphynx kitten

Off to see a sphynx kitten next week with the hopes of bringing home when ready in a couple of weeks

What essentials do other sphynx owners recommend?

Unless it’s a rescue which sounds unlikely, reconsider for all the reasons @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats stated

I looked after one for a friend when they went travelling for 3 weeks. I was quite fond of the little idiot, but delighted to hand him back when they came home.

He was cute and affectionate. But soooo clingy. I couldn't wear anything white because he was filthy and stank like a sweaty mushroom. He liked to sleep wrapped round my head like Voldemort/a fleshy turban.

Bath time was necessary. But traumatic.

Dying at sweaty mushroom and fleshy turban 😂😂

Oh my word, if I ever wanted a sphynx cat this thread has put me off forever.
These comments have made my weekend…..

🤣🤣

@allisonsingalveston I’d reconsider on the basis of this thread. Lots of issues with hairless cats I hadn’t been aware of.

We have a rescue ragdoll, she sounds as clingy as a sphynx and it is really quite hard work! I wouldn’t do it again because we literally can’t leave her alone for any length of time!

YourWinter · 08/12/2024 20:54

The only advice I’d give is don’t get one. Don’t encourage the breeders of these extreme genetic mutilations. If you actually like cats, don’t get the latest instagram freak show.

I suggest you get very good pet insurance.

I 'd also suggest that you reconsider getting a Sphynx.
Let's not pretend. Sphynx cats have been bred deliberately to maintain a genetic abnormality to make them look 'cute' hideous with no regard for the actual animal's health. They have the shortest average lifespan of any domestic cat (6.7 years according to a recent UK study).

Also worth noting that the Netherlands has recognised that the breeding of these animals is animal cruelty and has taken steps to ban then.
Buying them from a breeder just encourages this production line of unhealthy 'designer' cats. If you are happy with that go ahead.

@allisonsingalveston Please read and re- read this post. Do you really think getting one is the humane choice?

MugPlate · 08/12/2024 21:04

Poor things, it's awful being cold all the time.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/12/2024 21:06

Like everything there's a rabbit hole for cats I was looking at the price of Sphynx and found the Elf Cat which is rare and has curled back ears .

Why . ...?

Thats a lot to get your head around 🤣.

Esgaroth · 08/12/2024 23:32

Oh my goodness, it can be mildly annoying to have cat hair on things sometimes but I don't think I could cope with an animal leaving grease stains everywhere 😫

Poor creatures.

Surely half the joy of a cat is how fluffy and cute they are?

Just found out some people in Russian tattoo their sphinxes. Social media was a bad idea.

Good God.

It's like those awful "munchkin" cats or Scottish Folds - should be illegal.

There’s an episode of ‘Friends’ in which Rachel acquires a sphynx cat called Mrs Whiskerson:

“Rachel's friends, however, are repulsed by the cat's visually unappealing look: Ross maintains that it is "inside out", Joey strongly dismisses its being a cat, Chandler says it's a "minion of the anti-Christ", Gunther is also unable to decide what creature Mrs. Whiskerson is and satirically asks Ross whether it is a snake.“

The Sphinx breed is actually banned in some countries because of the healthproblems that a lot of them experience. They need a lot of grooming and training, otherwise they suffer because of how they've been bred.

I wonder if we'll look back on breeds like this (as well as Persians, and dog breeds like pugs) and wonder why on earth we ever thought they were a good idea?

I know in some countries it's now illegal to breed pugs and Frenchies because they're considered so cruel.

Sibilantseamstress · 09/12/2024 10:06

What about a Rex? Short curly hair. My sister has one. Are they any better? A possible alternative?

How beautiful! 😻

Sibilantseamstress · 09/12/2024 10:24

Yeah, he’s really cute and sweet. A Devon Rex mixed with Siamese, I think. But I have no idea, if he would also be considered an unhealthy breed. I don’t think my sister is any sort of expert, she just fell in love.

But, if they are healthier, I wonder if they would be a good alternative. Also an off-beat choice, but a little less extreme.

mazylou · 09/12/2024 10:25

Rexes are gorgeous, we are big fans.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 09/12/2024 10:53

Or how about a moggy?
Or are they regarded as too dull and not 'instagram enough' to 'make a statement'?

Most cats can live up to 20 years why on earth you'd want one that will die by 6-7 years is beyond me.

😻😻 They look like they have some Maine Coone in them. One of my cats is half Maine Coone and looks all fluffy like yours.

As soon as I saw this thread, I could hear Joey in my head, "It's NOT a cat!!"

CleanShirt · 09/12/2024 11:05

Boy Cat is half sphynx (purebred unfixed mum who wandered into a bad neighbourhood!). He got all the bad sphynx traits - clingy, loud, always burrowing for warmth (despite all his ginger fur). I have to clean his eyes and his ears for him because he's so rubbish at it. I love him with all my heart but I would 100% avoid the breed in future!
