Just do it! (Of course, usual pet owners caveats being able to provide long term care and love, insurance and a safe home).

I’m posting this because only 4 weeks ago we had to say goodbye to our beautiful 20yrold lady who we’ve had since a stray kitten.

Perhaps we grieved in the months before her passing, she was diagnosed with a large tumour and was 20. Still, the grief when we said goodbye was immense.

We dithered with what to do with her left over pouches and bags of litter … looked at our local rescue a few days later and adopted two 7 mth old black kittens a week ago.

Oh the life they have brought to our house! Just recommending really in case anyone out there is dithering like we were (admittedly we didn’t dither for long!)

I lost my best boy in September and we recently adopted a young cat. I still miss my cat but the presence of another (naughty) cat has helped. He’s super affectionate and a real joy. I was told by everyone to wait but I’m glad I didn’t. I wanted to get one in the winter as then it was easier to keep him in to settle as well.

The ‘new’ ones are always naughty aren’t they? So adorable ❤️

The late Cheddar came home two weeks after Maia died and she really helped with the grief, as did Penelope when she finally came. I knew about her within hours of Magics death. And knowing there would be another heartbeat in the house was also a great help. It doesn't replace the one you've lost, just helps fill the hole.

Thankyou so much for this. I posted a few days ago about my beloved rspca rescue who died on Tuesday. People have told me not to get another cat, but I live on my own and I really want to love and be loved by another fluffy rescue.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 22/11/2024 23:05

I had this. My 10-year-old rescue Siamese sadly developed cancer tumours and I had to make the difficult decision to put him to sleep. Within weeks more Siamese rescues appeared. I accepted to adopt a beautiful lilac point baby 15 months old. I was then offered within days through one of the other specialist Siamese rescues a kitten. That was tricky. What did I do? Reject the 15 month old or go for a kitten? We adopted the 15 month old, and a few years on adopted a sister. They don't get on. At all. That's life!

We got the Mini House Panthers 5 years ago , not to fill a CatSpace but DH wanted cat/s again after a gap of about 13 years .
They were young adults not kittens and settled into life with us ( basically took over) and though we wanted a black cat in the pair , we were absolutely smitten by these two .
Even though they are gaslightly little swine who like to confuse us .

I adopted another 3 days after I lost my old boy, and my new one really was sent to me
They're so so similar

The day mine died I started looking at photos in the adoption pages and it took about 3 weeks before I was one that caught my eye. It’s a good way to start and I was prepared to wait until I saw the right one

@Igotjelly This is our beautiful old lady 💕💕💕

She was gorgeous.

I totally agree to taking the plunge. We lost our little Lightning in May last year and the house all wrong without a kitty. We adopted Nala in September and she has brought such joy and hilarity - she is a proper madam and shouts at us a lot for being bad slaves! 🤣 Lightning is the grey tabby and Nala, the black kitty.

They look lovely OP. We lost one of our dogs about two weeks ago. She was only 6 so it was extra shock and we have decided no more dogs after the one we have left goes. We also have a cat, but I feel more comfortable getting another cat when she passes than I do dogs. Less work

Obsessedwithlamps · 23/11/2024 17:20

We also lost our old boy to old age illness. I also think we had already grieved for him in a way as he had been ill for so long. We got 2 kittens within weeks. They are crazy and totally different to our old boy. I cannot live in a house without a cat/cats.

Thank you for this. Percy is still not home after 6 weeks. The lack of closure is killing me but we’ve agreed if we get to Spring with no good news we’ll look again. At the moment it feels hateful to consider loving a cat again but your thread is giving me hope that one day our hearts will be ready for it :)

OldTinHat · 23/11/2024 17:36

Not a cat, but I lost my rescue Ddog three and a half years ago. I swore I'd never have another.

Two months ago, I picked up another rescue, an old lady. I'd been dithering and, when she was home, I wondered why on earth I'd waited so long!

Oh Lightning is a proper beautiful tiger girl, it’s so bloody hard to lose them. I adore how Nala has just settled in, yes, here I am! Do as I please!

I hear you. I’m so sorry…they leave a huge hole in the family dynamic. Funnily enough (not funny but ykwim) we adopted a gorgeous rescue dog in 2019 imagining she would outlive our elderly cat. But life doesn’t work that way does it.

HaHa no way would I put any part of my body that I valued near FemaleCat without her giving me the heads up . She has to invite or demand .
That photo was when she was locked in DS room while DH opened the loft hatch , she was raging that something was going on that she was excluded from.

Her new ploy is an early morning attack on DD door , if she sleeps on DD bed she paws at her face ( with claws) so tends to get locked out .
Bad Move DD cats do not like a closed door .
4am this morning she was mewing really loud till DD got up and opened the door .

I don't know if it is typical but in a M/F pair either siblings or bonded , is it usually the female who is Alpha? Seems pretty par for the course on threads I;ve read.

Our cats have two trays , Female will sometimes use her brothers tray ( when they are both pristine) but likes to keep her own too , which he never uses .
