Neighbour doesn’t want cats walking on her fence

My next door neighbour came round today and said that she’s getting annoyed that our two cats keep walking along the fence in her back garden. She said that it upsets her dog and makes it bark. She has a huge dog that barks at everything.

It took me a bit by surprise as I am not sure what she expects us to do. We still have litter trays that the cats come inside to use and we don’t intend to train that out of them, but that’s not her complaint anyway. She doesn’t want them on the fence or walking in her garden.

We left it as if she can think of anything to let us know but I’m just a bit confused. DP thinks this is the start of bother but I really want to avoid that if I can. Has anyone else had this?

Picture of the main offender, who I don’t think is too concerned…

I'm sure if you explain the situation to the ball of fluffy cuteness that is the main offender, he will be very understanding of your neighbour's frustrastion and never taunt the big stupid barky dog again...

... said no cat ever.

Try attaching overhangs to your fence to stop them getting out of your garden

Cuppachuchu · 06/11/2024 18:42

Just tell her you've had a word with them and they've promised not to do it again. With a straight face.

TerryKirby · 06/11/2024 18:43

"The main offender" 😂name and shame @Mowyourlawn name and shame!!

There is only one sure fire way of getting cat not to walk on her fence - and that is to take the fence down.

Silly woman.

I actually said that to our neighbour once. She never mentioned it again, so it worked. Possibly because she thought I was bonkers.

Walking on the fence is pretty mortal acceptable car behaviour

Yeah, that's not a possibility really, is it.

Potentiallyplausible · 06/11/2024 18:50

Who dies the fence belong to?

I think it is - you can get spikes to put on top. They are designed not to hurt cats and are made out of plastic. They come in strips and you just nail the strips to the top of the fence.

😂Have you met many cats?

Bonbon21 · 06/11/2024 18:51

Tell her to invest in a water pistol.
Cats, apparently, can do no wrong.

Don’t the wheels damage the fence?

They aren't fully domesticated unlike dogs so aren't expected to be under the owners control.

Basically if you have a garden it is up to you to deter them from not using parts of it.

However if you also have foxes and squirrels as visitors as well, you may deter two of them but you can't deter all of them.

SometimesCalmPerson · 06/11/2024 18:53

You could put up another fence on your side and then attach some of those roller things or a shelf at the top so your cat can’t get on her fence. Assuming it is her fence.

Why should she?

She's fine with the cats going in and out.

None of the other neighbours have a problem. In fact i wouldn't be surprised if the guilty one has one or more people s/he visits.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 06/11/2024 18:54

Is it definitely her fence?

if so she can install some of the spiky strips to stop them from walking along it if she likes.

Yeah, our neighbour has put that on his fences. It does seem to keep the cats off but doesn’t bother the squirrels who like to go and eat his bulbs.

It also trapped a Sparrowhawk when it got its claw stuck underneath. We had to chuck a towel over it and carefully work it free. Thankfully it flew off and seemed unharmed.

Neighbour didn’t care, he thought it was funny. Mind you, he is a knob who has also put netting over his tv aerial to stop the blackbird from perching on top and singing in the evenings…

I hope she has a word with her dog and he's promised not to savage them if they stop taunting him. And I do hope the cat owner takes some responsibility for the safety of her pets.

Because she’s the one who wants cats, and they’re impacting her neighbours who presumably don’t.

My log-loving cat-hating neighbour put those spikes on her fence. They just tiptoe over them.

My neighbour has 2 cats. One of them thinks it lives in my house and also likes to jump scare me at the kitchen window while I'm washing up. Annoying fecker, but I missed it when he was kept inside for a couple of weeks for some reason.

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 06/11/2024 18:56

Doesn't she know your cats owns you not the other way around?

Just the thought of Tufty & Nutkin nibbling on his bulbs .... 😹!!
