Neighbour doesn’t want cats walking on her fence

My next door neighbour came round today and said that she’s getting annoyed that our two cats keep walking along the fence in her back garden. She said that it upsets her dog and makes it bark. She has a huge dog that barks at everything.

It took me a bit by surprise as I am not sure what she expects us to do. We still have litter trays that the cats come inside to use and we don’t intend to train that out of them, but that’s not her complaint anyway. She doesn’t want them on the fence or walking in her garden.

We left it as if she can think of anything to let us know but I’m just a bit confused. DP thinks this is the start of bother but I really want to avoid that if I can. Has anyone else had this?

Picture of the main offender, who I don’t think is too concerned…

Ask her if she can have a word with the dog about not over-reacting?

You could put up another fence on your side and then attach some of those roller things or a shelf at the top so your cat can’t get on her fence. Assuming it is her fence.

Or you could just ignore her.

SensibleSigma · 06/11/2024 20:24

It’s actually really annoying when cats taunt my dog. It is deliberate. They are arseholes- and they wave them at my dog regularly! 🤣

If I had a situation like this, I would attempt to cat proof- the angled mesh inside your own fence would do it and would keep your cats safe from all sorts as well.

Pibrea · 06/11/2024 20:25

Maybe you don’t want to have to hear her disgusting animal barking all the time. Can’t she keep it in?

OnTheBoardwalk · 06/11/2024 20:32

As other PP have said, tell her you'll have a chat with your cat and tell him to stop walking on the fence. If she can have a word with her barking dog to stop yapping then you'll all be happy

my nice next door neighbour doesn’t like cats or any pets. I told him to squirt my cats with water if they come in his garden, he’s done this I’m ok with that

my new cat absolutely adores him. Watches him on his window whilst he's washing up. I've heard him saying nice things to her but she'll still get a squirt if she goes near his flower beds

Vitriolinsanity · 06/11/2024 20:35

My neighbour put up a six foot fence in his garden to stop cats getting in.

It made our garden look like the Shawshank yard so I've put up fancy lights and climbers in our side.

The cats do not go in his garden, but they absolutely love sitting on top of the fence for hours looking into it. Also on top of his garage and shed.

There is literally NOTHING that mumsnetters wont argue about

I second other posters. Get some of those spikey red plastic strips. I doubt it will fully stop them though. It's not stopped mine

It doesn't. They just twine their bodies around them and ever so gently push them over.

Cat goads dogs. Tis what cartoons have been built on.

Yes there is!

Drop round a mask for her dog so he can't see them.

MammaRoly · 06/11/2024 20:52

I had a similar conversation with a neighbour years ago who knocked to complain that my cat Ed kept popping through her cat flap (not a euphemism!) to eat her cat's food. I said I would have a word with Ed 😳 but suggested she invest in a magnetic cat flap. Then she knocked to say my cat Ed would wait for her cat to activate the magnetic cat flap, then pop in and eat her cat's food and sleep on her bed. I struggled to keep a straight face. When Ed sauntered into our house carrying a cooked joint of pork in his jaws, I thought it would all kick off! Her For Sale sign went up shortly afterwards but I don't think it was anything to do with my angelic little fur baby!!!!

Sering as its her fence she needs to put cat proofing spin roll on it. They cant get over that. Its alled cat proof roller barrier.

Most people have 6 foot fences around their back gardens where I live. I thought that was pretty standard. They certainly don't stop the cats though.

girlofsandwich · 06/11/2024 23:20

Yes to the rollers! I have an indoors cat but may be in a house in the next year where it will be difficult to avoid an escape and these look really effective.

I do understand the neighbours point of view if the dog is barking, but where does it end, any cat can walk on the fence, my parent's house have regular visitors because the cats like the company in the garden. I'd try the rollers on that fence for the sake of an easier life.

Move next to me, tell him the cost of walking along my fence is coming in for a cuddle!! He's absolutely gorgeous.

they're cats, they do cat stuff 🤷🏻‍♀️ tell her to train her dog. She'd have to if she had visiting squirrels or birds...

Potentiallyplausible · 06/11/2024 18:50

Who dies the fence belong to?

It really doesn't matter, cats are allowed to roam.

StormingNorman · 06/11/2024 23:32

I don’t think she understands cats.

nomorehocuspocus · 06/11/2024 23:34

Any self-respecting cat would ignore the spiky fence from now on, and taunt the dog sit minding its own business on the top of the OP's shed roof instead.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/11/2024 19:37

Suggest to your neighbour that she sellotapes snails along the top of her fence as that will discourage your cat from ealking along it. (unless it is French, it's not is it?)

That's cruel

@Boiledbeetle oh they look good for lot of cats. My most recent boy 🐈 (now no longer with us 🥲) wouldn't have been put off by it though. He was a proper little Par cour boy, he'd have sprung off a side wall or something. The last cat on the advert🙄🤪🤪 perfectly good window ledge to jump onto then over the roller. Not much between it's cute ears!!

She just needs to bother her arse to train her dog!! Daft moo

Because she’s the one who wants cats, and they’re impacting her neighbours who presumably don’t.

Impacting the neighbour who wants a dog. Maybe the neighbour should put some trellis up if she can't control her dog's barking 😉

getthosetitsup · 07/11/2024 00:09

Tell her you've had a frank discussion with your cats and explained the situation. And they still don't give a shit.

Gettingbysomehow · 07/11/2024 00:17

I love my neighbours three cats they are very cute and they get on with my two cats.
But my black cat is a sod. She deliberately winds up the terrier on the othe side.
