Quote for dental work!

Yes this is for my cat. His mouth has started to smell and according to the vet, he needs a dental clean and polish, and maybe two extractions 😬😪
all for the princely sum of just under £1,000…

has anyone had similar? This includes anaesthetic and all sorts of other bits. I feel so sad for him, he’s going to be miserable. Even going to the vet, he was so nervous I thought he was going to pass out. Oh and it’s apparently genetic and we haven’t done anything wrong…

Well take a look at the costs of having that little lot done on a human by a private dentist in the UK, then add on the anaesthetic and attendant aftercare costs, and you're getting quite a good deal from the vet...

Toddlerteaplease · 05/11/2024 06:45

Bloody hell. My cat had a two stage dental, with x rays, 6 teeth out and that cost £900.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/11/2024 06:46

A simple scale at polish at a different vet about 18 months ago cost about £250 I think.

Stripytee · 05/11/2024 07:00

Thanks, maybe I should get another quote… its all Medivet around here

That's a huge amount of money imo - a dental around here for a cat is approximately £250.

£1000 for a teeth clean and two extractions is incredibly expensive. There's just no way it needs to cost that much

We're actually taking ours for this today. Same thing, genetic issues with gums. She's a British shorthair and I think they're prone to it. We've have 4 BSH and one other had the same thing. We've been quoted "around £500" but that's with no teeth out. I hope she doesn't need any out for her sake but if she does then it goes up in cost per tooth apparently. That's our local vet that they're all registered with. I'll update later when we pick her up and have been the final amount Hmm

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 05/11/2024 08:56

How old is he? Harry's dental was more expensive as he got older due to the necessary additional blood tests and monitoring.

Stripytee · 05/11/2024 09:03

Thanks for all your replies - extremely helpful. He’s only 3 so I am worried this could just be the start of it all ..

Please be aware that you don't have to agree to any pre-op blood tests - they're entirely optional.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/11/2024 11:29

I wouldn't be having bloods for a healthy 3 year old. But I did have fluids.

Beamur · 05/11/2024 11:31

My vet offers fixed price dental (up to a point) as part of a monthly fee for vaccinations and check ups.

Beamur · 05/11/2024 11:32

If a young cat needs dental work I would want the blood tests as this can be an indicator of kidney issues

He's lovely ❤️

Our girl settled at the vet. Pre treatment quote on admission was £502. Not having bloods but opted for laser to help recovery apparently...£15 so a bargain 😂😂

KnittedCardi · 05/11/2024 11:42

The chains tend to go ott on treatment and therefore price. Find a good local independent. Arthur, who is 10, had some tartare build up, and sore gums, the chain vet quoted several hundred pounds, the local vet had a look, and picked the tartar off with his fingernails! Job done. Unbelievable really, and very, very, concerning.

gano · 05/11/2024 11:46

That's a lot. I use an expensive vet, and when I adopted mine it cost £1150 for most of her teeth to be removed. This wasn't long ago either, only last year. I'd shop around.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 05/11/2024 12:09

That's some quote! My cat somehow broke an upper canine - took her to the vet who admitted her straight away for emergency removal. They removed the offending tooth, and the one next to it as it was loose. Scale and Polish included and we had change out of 250 quid.

Fontainebleau007 · 05/11/2024 12:13

My cat had a dental 2 years ago. 2 teeth removed and scale and polish. Wasn't more than £150.
That price seems excessive.

TicTac80 · 05/11/2024 12:35

I've just taken three of my cats for their yearly boosters and check ups. One of them does have gingivitis - which I had been trying to manage at home (interesting with a cat that won't let you brush his teeth or apply the gel to his gums!!). Vet has suggested a dental appt for him. It starts at £280 for basic GA and scale/polish, but can go up in price (they said £600-900) depending on what condition his teeth are in/what work needs doing when he's under. I've booked him in for it. Luckily I have a vet plan thing where they knock 10% of dental work!

SkankingWombat · 05/11/2024 13:11

We were quoted a base price of £600 about 18 months ago for our then-12yo DCat (going up if it turned out extractions were also required). It would have been the first she'd had and it wasn't due to a smell or an indication of pain, but because of her age there were 'bound to be problems' and at a minimum they'd desperately need a good clean. We said we'd think about it as it seemed a lot of money for a 'just in case'.

6 months later she developed a skin problem that required a number of tests and treatment, some of which required sedation. The vet, upon collection, said whilst DCat was under she had a good look round her mouth. Her teeth were in great condition, none rotten, and just a couple of plaque build ups, which she'd quickly flicked off... No extra charge made for it. I don't understand their pricing, as the sedation visit (including bloods and taking and analysing skin scrapings) was less than the quote to check her teeth, but I'm bloody glad we didn't just book her in for a dental when it was recommended!

Bettergetthebunker · 05/11/2024 13:13

Last month, two teeth out, scale, polish, bloods due to age. £1200

ExquisiteIyDesigned · 05/11/2024 13:16

We've just been quoted £600-£800 (depending on the extent of the work) for two extractions and scale/polish the rest for a 12yo cat in otherwise very good health. Independent practice.
