Yes this is for my cat. His mouth has started to smell and according to the vet, he needs a dental clean and polish, and maybe two extractions 😬😪
all for the princely sum of just under £1,000…

has anyone had similar? This includes anaesthetic and all sorts of other bits. I feel so sad for him, he’s going to be miserable. Even going to the vet, he was so nervous I thought he was going to pass out. Oh and it’s apparently genetic and we haven’t done anything wrong…

We've paid around £300 for GA and scale and polish each time for our cats in the past (medium sized chain of vets, dental treatment not covered by insurance)

Our 10yo boy had serious ongoing problems with his mouth that a couple of deep cleans (with extractions both times at extra a cost) didn't fix and he recently had full dental extraction of 20+ remaining teeth to manage stomatitis. That was £851 and included an overnight stay and IV painkillers.

Please be aware that you don't have to agree to any pre-op blood tests - they're entirely optional.

I know they are but there's no way I would put an older cat through a general anaesthetic without them.

12 year old cat this year
No bloods, didn't see the point. (If she was that ill that she died she'd have had to have been put down anyway as in pain from toothache which is agony)

Drip £90. Recommended for older cats to support their kidneys

Canine tooth removed under general anaesthetic and stitches £600. (This was a tier B. They also have A £450 for scale and polish only, and C for multiple teeth £900).

Painkillers £30

Initial consultation £70.

Follow up consultations x2 free.

Nail clipping while unconscious free.

Mine is home after 3 extractions, final total £540. No idea how they work it out as with no extractions it was £517. She's doing great thankfully!

Bloody hell, that's outrageous!

My cat recently was neutered, microchipped, had NINE teeth out (he was a stray so hadn't been looked after at all), and we paid £395

Are you on any benefits? Have a look on the PDSA website and see if you'd qualify for cheaper treatment.

DCat (4) -also a British short hair - had eight teeth out in two visits in September and October this year after being diagnosed with chronic gingival stomatitis. She was fine after each procedure and now her mouth is much better.

We paid just over £1,400 over the two visits. It was capped by fixed cost treatments and by being pet club members. Plus, we’ve just got most of it back from the insurance - I think possibly because it’s not primarily a dental condition but more an auto immune one.

Thank you everyone who has replied… its so helpful! I have managed to find some local independents and in the process of getting estimates…

Three of my cats have had dentals in the past year (they are all around 6/7yo and this was their first dental). They all had extractions (two had two, one had four) and the cost was similar for each of them.

The estimate I got beforehand in every case was much higher than the reality. And in each case the insurance paid for it, minus the usual excess. I just checked the most recent one -

Estimate £970!! But actual cost was £562, and Agria paid £420 of that.

Changed18 · 06/11/2024 14:58

Also for us the estimates were higher than the reality since it depended how many teeth had to come out.
