Hi

We are due to pick up our mixed breed kittens in the next 3 weeks, today the owner took them for a vet check and it turns out 2 are female and one is male. - a bit shell shocked to be honest

Easy mistake with being young but I just don't know what to expect with male kittens/cats and wondering whether to just take the 2 females?

We have always had females, upto the last year 2 elderly sisters and a younger sister, all got on well(not snuggly) but occasionally groomed each other and always greeted each other. I have never had male cat/kitten experience and just don't know what to expect with the dynamics, we plan to get them all neuteured as soon as feasible but my concerns for the male are spraying and also roaming far(my 3 pretty much stayed in the garden)

Please correct me if i have got the male thing wrong

I've had plenty of boy cats and they do wander a bit but they are just as lovely or as difficult as girls. They also don't spray if get them done young enough. I have two boys just now and they're the best natured cats yet.

bigbadbarry · 29/10/2024 19:57

They are just cats. Get him neutered as soon as your vet says you can - before he starts to spray, then he will never start. I have a male and a female cat at the moment and he never leaves the garden whereas she patrols an enormous territory.

K0OLA1D · 29/10/2024 19:59

Boy cats tend to be more lovable if I'm honest. Girls are a lot more independent, though they can roam slightly more, neutered or not.

(I've had 3 boys and 4 girls, currently got 2 boys and 3 girls!)

Not my experience having owned dozens of cats. (I grew up in a family that rescued them) They’re all individuals and their sex makes no difference ime.

From my experience they have been.

Not saying it's fact. I've owned 7 and had experience with others and boys tend to be more patient with kids and cuddly compared to the girls.

My boy cats have always been more cuddly and affectionate than the females.

I got them due to a similar mixup after only having had girls before but I quickly fell in love with him and now he's my shadow. Give it a try, he's probably lovely! Mine never roamed far - I could call their names and they'd pop up out of some hiding place instantly.

Up until last week I had 1 girl 2 boys (now one of each). The girl ruled the house and the boys did everything she said and worshiped her.

Of my two boys, one has never been in a fight, the other only ever one and that was because a strange cat threatened his sister and he stepped in to defend her and run the other cat off.

It's just the unknown for me, yes we would get him neutered asap

The only one which did was one i rescued at one who was semi feral. He used to fight and roam and does still fight and roam but not terribly. He is a bit scared of our new tiny kitten. He doesn't spray though. None have apart from a semi feral female I rescued.

My other boys were massive wimps though.

pipmay · 29/10/2024 20:07

I prefer boy cats ( obviously neutered) absolute cuddly babies every single one I have ever had .Not as independent as girls and rather lazy. My girl cats have been better hunters and more spiky . Never had spraying and my current boy barely leaves a the garden.
I prefer a single cat though as I like the deep bond you get with a single very relaxed cat.

I previously had a boy and girl. Girl was out killing whilst the boy was always flat on his back on the sofa. They were not very interested in each other past kittenhood.

Yes i have heard that about boy cats being more lovable, once neutered do they still get sexual urges with each other or pretty much not interested?

Not any of mine.

The one I rescued un-neutered fought and roams but I think that was due to him having his balls for so long. He's probably a dad as well!

No I’ve had girls and boys. Two (neutered) boys now, one loving and sooooo soft and scared of everything, the other is not scared of anything more standoffish but enjoys a cuddle too, he can be a bit of a scrapper. Neither go far from our garden and neighbouring gardens, and both have grown up together so had same environment (but not blood brothers). My last girl loved having mortal enemies! I’ve not found much difference with the sexes, they all have their own personalities regardless.

one of my cats was a massive hunter, even up to the age of 16 she was very active.

good to know that your male is laid back and never wanders far, think i might be caving

We got a make and female three years ago. Maybe Coons and their personalities are as advertised- make a big affectionate teddy bear, the female sweet but more self contained. We got them neutered at about six months. I've had mostly females before but can't see I've noticed much difference between the two sexed (all mogies) other than these ones.

I've had two neutered boy cats who have been the most soppy adoring on me cats I've ever met
Demanding tummy rubs, following me round like a little shadow

I'm on my third boy cat and can say they lovely lovely lovely creatures. Just get them neutered and you'll be fine. Actually the 2 girls I had were both much less affectionate than all the boys and wanted to be put and about most of the time. The boys all like a cuddle 🥰
