Hi

We are due to pick up our mixed breed kittens in the next 3 weeks, today the owner took them for a vet check and it turns out 2 are female and one is male. - a bit shell shocked to be honest

Easy mistake with being young but I just don't know what to expect with male kittens/cats and wondering whether to just take the 2 females?

We have always had females, upto the last year 2 elderly sisters and a younger sister, all got on well(not snuggly) but occasionally groomed each other and always greeted each other. I have never had male cat/kitten experience and just don't know what to expect with the dynamics, we plan to get them all neuteured as soon as feasible but my concerns for the male are spraying and also roaming far(my 3 pretty much stayed in the garden)

Please correct me if i have got the male thing wrong

No I’ve had girls and boys. Two (neutered) boys now, one loving and sooooo soft and scared of everything, the other is not scared of anything more standoffish but enjoys a cuddle too, he can be a bit of a scrapper. Neither go far from our garden and neighbouring gardens, and both have grown up together so had same environment (but not blood brothers). My last girl loved having mortal enemies! I’ve not found much difference with the sexes, they all have their own personalities regardless.

Oi, he’s mine! Give him back Grin

My boy is a total cuddle monster. He was done late as a stray, no problem at all. I have been incapussatated for the last hour. Bliss

I've got three boys and one girl. The boys are so lovely, good natured, friendly. Only one roams at night but he's back every morning for breakfast and sleeps at home all day. None of them spray.

Our male and female mixed pair. I don't think there is much of a difference between boys and girls. Get all the kitties

Such cuties!!! I’m in agreement, get all the kitties. We really want a third but don’t want to upset our boys as they are so settled, happy and easy (as easy as cats can be anyway!) I’d love to have started with three though.

They really are my beautiful babies. Got them as rescue at 15 weeks. Now 6 months old.

Also to add - my boy cats don’t spray at all, we don’t even have a litter tray as they go in the garden.

IceCreamCookies · 29/10/2024 20:50

My male ragdoll was neutered by the breeder asap and we never had any issues with spraying or smell, it's when they aren't neutered you tend to get those issues or neutered too late.
He has a very sweet temperament.. Very calm and loves being pet but I think all cats are individuals.
He was very accepting of our other kittens, though it did take a week for him to stop being nervous around them. Once that was out of the way he was very playful with our male and female kitten.

coffeesaveslives · 29/10/2024 20:56

We've had four boys and two girls over the years - I also work with cats and honestly, once they're neutered, there's very little noticeable difference in behaviour. It's all down to personality.

We currently have three boys - one is a real lap cat, one will only accept affection on his terms otherwise you'll get smacked, and one is young and too fidgety for too many cuddles yet Grin

One got into a scrap with a rat recently and one returned not long ago with a minor neck wound but otherwise we've not had any issues. They don't wander far and come back when they're called.

noclouds · 29/10/2024 21:02

I had took home two boy cats and when they went for their check up at the vets we found out we had a boy and a girl.

The boy is much friendlier than the girl who rarely comes near us. Didn't have any issues with spraying, but we neutered as soon as we could. The girl cat loves being outside, whereas the boy is usually curled up on the sofa

I prefer boy cats ( obviously neutered) absolute cuddly babies every single one I have ever had .Not as independent as girls and rather lazy. My girl cats have been better hunters and more spiky . Never had spraying and my current boy barely leaves a the garden.
I prefer a single cat though as I like the deep bond you get with a single very relaxed cat.

I previously had a boy and girl. Girl was out killing whilst the boy was always flat on his back on the sofa. They were not very interested in each other past kittenhood.

I have a girl and a boy and this is my experience. He's a snuggly lazy greedy lap cat and she's a skittish hunter who is out all day.

I've only ever had boys before this girl and they've all been very affectionate homely cats.. the girl was a bit of a shock.

DP had girl cats growing up and he says the girls personality is what he is more used to when it comes to his experience with cats.

OverthinkingOlive · 29/10/2024 21:08

Take all three OP please don't give up on him 🩷🩷🩵

PyreneanAubrie · 29/10/2024 21:24

I've had cats all my life and I much prefer boys. More affectionate, more laid-back, more character, more loyal but also quieter (as in, less vocal) and far less stroppy than girls. I don't know about the wandering because my boys have all been big couch potatoes that just loaf around for hours on end; the girls were more independent and inclined to wander. Boy cats are amazing, honestly. If he's neutered there'll be no issues with spraying. I've had 10 boys in total over the last 50 years (we're a multi cat household) , never had any issues with spraying, fighting or wandering.

ZippyDoodle · 29/10/2024 22:34

Our cat was six when we got him and the rescue said he liked to roam. He loves going out but is never far away. I think he wasn't very happy where he lived previously.

I've had four male cats and none of them have sprayed. Two very affectionate and two less so but they all have their own personalities.

Lots of rescues are inundated at the moment so please take him. I'm sure he'll be fine.

DanaBarrett · 29/10/2024 22:45

I’ve had cats all my life and have absolutely no preference as to sex. We currently have two girls and two boys. One of the girls is mam to both the boys and came as a bonded pair with the other girl.
In my experience, it’s not like other species, they’re very much their own personalities. We joke that the boys share a brain cell (they’re very uncat like as they were born here and have never been separated) but I’ve had aloof girls and super affectionate boys and vice versa.
Before that we had a girl who literally evicted the boy when DD1 was born!
You won’t regret a boy, ever.
