How to get a cuddly cat who loves to sit on your lap

I know all cats have different temperaments but I would really love to get an easygoing cat who likes to sit beside me on the sofa, will sit on my lap and sleep etc,
Is there any way to find a cat /kitten like this? Would male or female be better,? tabby or ginger or what breed? Or does it even matter? I really love the British short hair breed

I had one boy from aged ten , from family, so a known quantity, utter lap cat. ,current big boy was a stray on an allotment and was always seeking cuddles. I met him, he jumped on my knee and that was that. Total soft lap cat, sleeps on my knee for hours, on my chest and under my chin. I often have to miss doing chores. Oh dear never mind. Lap cats should be available on prescription, my GP agrees. He came home with me agreed by CPS, as he was a community cat, in his new home two days before last Xmas. Both very happy together

I have posted this picture before on MN - so apologies for those who have seen it before.

Just saying be careful what you wish for. 🤣

So my advice is to get rescue moggies.

Buy a rag doll. They LOVE humans, snuggles and being carried about x

I’ve only had 3 cats, all ginger boys. They have all lap sat but have their funny quirks. One would lap sit only if there was a blanket between him and the human. In fact he would meow at the folded blanket which meant he wanted to sit on your lap so please unfold the blanket and put it on your lap/legs.

My current 2, one is very aloof but will lap sit in the evening. The other requires a cushion underneath him to lap/chest sit but he will otherwise always be near me on the back of the sofa.

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats that is hilarious. We always use the excuse "I've got the cat on me" to make others fetch tea etc but you really can't move without great disruption. Always make sure you've had a wee before you sit down!

We are the same - referred to as being 'incapussitated'

I have a 1 year old male and 5 year old female.

The girl is much more affectionate. She will sit on me but only on her terms. I didn't know it's usually the males otherwise I'd have got one first.

Hoping the male will settle once he's a little older.

"incapussitated". Love it!

I think you also need to be very patient. Our rescue didn't used to sit on lap but will do now two years after getting him.

Another vote for Siamese. I had both on my lap in the car whenever we travelled. Senior cat rather despised the lap at home , though, she preferred to be worn like a scarf. She had very good balance so didn’t seem to need to hang on with her claws.

in my experience, though, they do tend to prefer one person, although they can be persuaded to share their favours with guests( judicious promises of chicken).
