How to get a cuddly cat who loves to sit on your lap

I know all cats have different temperaments but I would really love to get an easygoing cat who likes to sit beside me on the sofa, will sit on my lap and sleep etc,
Is there any way to find a cat /kitten like this? Would male or female be better,? tabby or ginger or what breed? Or does it even matter? I really love the British short hair breed

All of my Persians have been super affectionate lap cats.

Ragdoll. They are effectively brain dead and will stay where they are put.

Aww Grin

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 27/10/2024 22:21

I think most male, moggies are fairly soppy ime especially once neutered.

spottedinthewilds · 27/10/2024 22:23

Just get a dog! Far more affectionate!
😂😂

Bubbles1001 · 27/10/2024 22:25

Agree with @PortiasBiscuit about Ragdolls. Mine is a ridiculous ball of cuddly fluff. They would sleep on you all day given half the chance!

stayathomer · 27/10/2024 22:28

our cat purrs and walks around your legs, loves being petted, but pick her up/ put her in your lap/ sit near here and she’s gone/ will scrab you!

smallchange · 27/10/2024 22:29

No guarantees I don't think, but I agree that getting an older cat with a known temperament is your best bet.

My girl was very aloof for most of the 15 years we had her. After a few years she'd sit beside you, but not on you.

In the last 2 or 3 years of her life she liked to lie sprawled out on me, but

  1. only me
  2. only in the late evening
  3. only if there was no-one else in the room.
Pepperama · 27/10/2024 22:29

Yep, affectionate male moggy cuddle monster here too, but only from about age 5 (he’s very old by now so many many years of loving zoom bombs and cuddles). When he was younger he was a passionate mouser, bird killer and got into regular fights with neighbourhood cats, foxes and even magpies. So just to say that you’d only know if you get a rescue cat who is past the kitten and rowdy teenager phases

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/10/2024 22:31

Get a ball of spitting, hissing rage.

Wait ten years until it's sneaking onto your bed whilst you're asleep, forgets itself and starts purring and fussing your hand.

Wait another six years.

Then you'll never have it off you for more than five minutes day and night for the next five or so.

Alternatively, take on something so small it needs teaching to go to the toilet and fits in the palm of a five year old's hand. Constantly touch paws, ears, tummy and body every single day. It'll be attached to you permanently.

I have a Birman boy and a BSH girl, they’re both lap cats. The Birman is particularly clingy and will sit by me 24/7 if possible. I think maybe being housecats helps as they are with people all the time, not off being independent. Though I’m sure there’s plenty of non house cats who are lap cats and vice versa.

AltitudeCheck · 27/10/2024 22:33

Partly their personality, partly how calm, patient and able to 'read' them you are, with cats it always has to be on their terms, and shy cats can take a long time to trust new people.

Mine are so much more affectionate when it's colder weather and they want a warm lap/ body to sleep on 😆 such fickle creatures.

NotMeNoNo · 27/10/2024 22:36

Burmese are often very affectionate, we used to have two who would jam themselves both onto my lap at the same time. Current cat is a rescue and hasn't sat in my lap for over 10 seconds in 8 years 😭.

buffyspikefaith · 27/10/2024 22:37

Black male cats always seem the most affectionate to me
My first one was glued to me 24/7
My current cat isn't a lap cat but he sits next to me with his paw on me, and sleeps under the duvet wedged against me

Both have loved belly rubs, kisses and there isn't a part of them I couldn't fuss
I accidentally poked him in the ear yesterday and he just blinked happily at me

Our male ragdoll craves company but does not sit on laps or like being hugged. He likes strokes on his terms only and although he often rubs against our legs, he frequently "rubs" a few cm away instead 🤣

We currently live in the tropics and are moving back to Europe next year. We're all hoping that he'll want to snuggle more when its winter...

Heffapotamus · 27/10/2024 22:42

Definitely a Burmese - they're not called Velcro cats for no reason!

Davros · 27/10/2024 22:47

Our part Bengal cat is the most cuddly you can imagine. She loves humans, even strangers, or I should say especially strangers. She always checks out any visitors and loves to be around people. I put this down to her being an indoor cat for her first two years so she became totally attached to her people. This was because DH and DD were scared she'd get lost or stolen. After two years I'd had enough of keeping the doors shut so out she went. Maybe two years is too long but possibly 6 months?

JamMakingWannaBe · 27/10/2024 22:53

Sit in a cold room with a heated throw over your knees. Cat on your lap in 5..4..3..

BibbityBobbityToo · 27/10/2024 22:54

My first rescue cat flirted, cuddled and purred the loudest compared to all the others in the cat home when we went to choose a cat. Flipping gorgeous big beastie he was. I scooped him up and he cuddled right in against my chest. Perfect, or so I thought.

Got him home and it took 9 bloody years before he ever wanted to sit on my knee and cuddle up. Little sod was clearly faking it just to get rehomed to live with us 😂.

You can never really tell, some breeds will be more likely than others and with Moggies, you'll never really know until they've moved in.

My male Ragdoll is like that, he's never sat on my knee or slept on the bed while we're in it.

He likes to occasionally squish in beside me on the sofa but generally spends most of life sleeping in whichever room we aren't in 🤣

QuiteAJourney · 27/10/2024 22:59

Another vote for Burmese - they love people! We have 2 and they very frequently sit on our laps (same with a previous pair of Burmese some years back)

3smallpups · 27/10/2024 23:15

Siamese
You can't get rid of them !
Mine is an active outdoor hunting cat but he knows what time we sit down in the evenings then he appears and either sits on a lap or if there are too many dogs in the way, in the middle.
Then he comes to bed and sleeps by the side of me all night, once I lie on my side to actually sleep, he then moves to make sure his body is fully extended along mine, can't say it's comfortable but you will feel loved 🤣 it's especially enjoyable if he pops out to the loo in the night and comes back to resume his position and is cold and damp.
During the day if he is asleep in the house and you sit down, he will get up so he can sit on or by you.
They just love physical contact.

northernsouldownsouth · 27/10/2024 23:26

I think female cats are more lap sitters than male cats

I think I prefer male cats for this reason ... and also I love their swagger

MadKittenWoman · 27/10/2024 23:49

Tom ragdoll. Got ours from RSPCA.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/10/2024 00:33

Our girl hopped up into my lap on her very first night here - she was a direct rehome from a family where she was stressed out with their toddler being boisterous and noisy. Forever a lap cat.

We very sadly had to say goodbye to her at age 10 earlier in the year, bastard cancer, and adopted a little ginger boy who had been a stray kitten found living in a shed. My DP said he was never going to be a lap cat, but six months in, possibly the weather changing, and live scenes. He’s taken time and patience but has gone from being a bit hissy and very wary, to a lovely cuddly boy.

Bottle raised kittens are usually very affectionate! But as PP said, look at an older cat and the rescue should be able to tell you about their personality.
