Weird cat rituals

Almost every night, at around 4am, Kitty wakes me up by pouncing on my foot.

Then she goes into the living room and eats a bit of kibble, I shut her in there to stop her waking me a second time and we both go back to sleep. At least I assume she goes back to sleep.

I have absolutely no idea what the reasoning behind this is. She gets no play or cuddles at that time of the morning and the kibble is out already.

Does anyone else’s cat do weird things for no apparent reason?

My Doris brings a mouse most mornings for which I am very grateful. However when I brush it onto a shovel I get bitten on the leg and chased. How dare I throw my present away.

TroysMammy · 16/10/2024 08:58

Troy used to come downstairs as soon as he heard the 10 o'clock news starting. He would meow it I asked him if it was time for bed. He would then escort me upstairs to the bathroom and would then would settle down on my pillow and I would fall asleep holding his paw. I remember that last night he was alive as we had done all the usual things but I also gave him a brush and then because of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy he was gone.

21.15 here and the screaming has commenced.........

Pudmyboy · 17/10/2024 21:18

My friend had a beautiful big fluffy grey-and-white girl who was vicious in the house to everyone, humans and cats alike. She used to sit near the back gate to swipe at any passing dog who dared to sniff under it (had a gap of a few inches above the pavement). Dogs were scared of her.
When she was outside on the street proper, you could not have met a more affectionate cat, to strangers and to people in her household, purring round your legs, allowing as much fuss as you wanted to give.....soon as she was back in the house, out came the claws.....

buffyfaithspike · 17/10/2024 21:25

Mine licks windows.
Also demands belly rubs by flopping dramatically on his back
He sleeps next to me but has to be right under the covers and wedged against me. If I don't lift up the duvet he digs at it until I do

Nothungrycat · 18/10/2024 09:53

One of mine likes to sleep on the bed, but will only get on the bed (which is in the middle of the room) by leaping onto the pillow I use and walking over the top of my head.

What happens if you ignore the meows?

No one knows. It’s never happened.

maybe they want to check you are alert so that they are safe to eat instead of being "on watch" and keeping you safe :) Mine watches me in the shower, wakes me up by batting my nose and then just one meow and she leaves me alone (checking I am available should a pouch need opening I suspect), sleeps on the bed when warm in the covers when cold and takes herself to bed if I don't go at the right time!

Maybe she does! I hadn’t thought of that.

She watches me in the shower too - I think our way of washing must look incredibly weird to cats.

I’ve just realised we have another one.

When Kitty has Dreamies, she always stands up to take them from my fingers. It’s very cute.

Today I held one out & she just looked at me. It took a moment to realise I was using my left hand for a change - moved it to the right one & she was straight up.

I had no idea that was a rule!

Iclyn · 23/10/2024 18:27

At around 9.50 pm she jumps up on the table whilst we are watching some tv and she stares at me until I go and get her a few dreamies .

In the morning after her breakfast she goes to our bed and gets on it but will keep getting off it and come and get one of us until we put the electric blanket on for an hour .

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 23/10/2024 18:31

I think Kitty would be in heaven if I bought an electric blanket.

Are electric blankets claw proof?

RumNotRun · 30/10/2024 07:59

Yes they appear to be. Mine has been kneaded by a couple of the wee beasties and still works fine.

Mistressofnone · 31/10/2024 21:33

😄 good - no frazzled whiskers

Mine will only jump up from the window side of the bed. They have to walk past and round the whole bed to get to that side 🤷🏻‍♀️

Remaker · 31/10/2024 22:08

My cats are indoor cats but still like to bring gifts. Often in the middle of the night I will hear a racket of howling then galloping paws followed by a little dink sound as a plastic clothes peg is dropped on the floor by my bed. In the morning there will be pegs outside the children’s bedroom doors as they sleep with them closed.

They are both good with using the litter tray however the covering up effort is very poor. One of them will scrape the wall or floor next to the litter tray as though that’s going to do something!

WhatsitWiggle · 31/10/2024 22:11

My cat has a few ...

Before exiting the house via the cat flap, she will go up to it, look out, then turn in a circle before pushing it open.

When coming into the living room to go upstairs, she will always walk in front of the sofa (walking behind the sofa is the shorter route). Same coming downstairs to go out of the living room.

If she comes into my room and I am awake (even if the light is off), she will not jump on the bed until I say "come up then". If I'm asleep, she just gets up. If she goes into my daughter's room, she jumps up regardless!

If we are going up or down the stairs, she'll wait until we've started and then barge past! She was a rescue and is scared of feet, so we think she was maybe kicked or stood on in her previous home.

stormsandsunshine · 31/10/2024 22:35

My cats are obsessed with the piano, which wouldn’t be weird except that if someone starts playing the piano they will rush from wherever they are in the house to get behind it and squeeze into the alcoves at the back. The sound gets amplified and it is very echoey back there and I can’t believe the noise doesn’t upset them. I can only assume they like the vibrations and find it like a giant purr.

We often go upstairs around 9.30pm and watch tv or read for an hour before we go to sleep. One of our cats has taken to miaowing loudly to tell us it's bedtime around 9pm every single night. They're locked downstairs at night as we'd get zero sleep and before anyone worries they're locked in the sitting room/dining room which is a good 25 square metres and has two sofas and a table and chairs 😹😹

Almost exactly the same here! Madam knows we go up about 9:30pm to read while she gets the downstairs to herself. If we're a bit later or at weekends, she plays hell until we go up - the clocks going back has been pretty challenging... 😆

We wonder how we've got into the position of a cat telling two humans when to go to bed...

BatFaceGiirll · 31/10/2024 23:05

Cats are crepuscular so they're most active at dawn and dusk so the 4am thing is normal waking for them

I shut mine downstairs (no hardship for her) to prevent her disturbing me at night as if she did, I'd end up wringing her furry little neck (half joking)

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/10/2024 23:07

One of our girls waits until our old boy is eating then closely sniffs all along his backbone. No idea why. Doesn’t do it at any other time.

user1471548941 · 01/11/2024 00:22

This is Ian.

Ian has a bedtime routine for me.
This includes shouting loudly if we're not upstairs by 11pm.

He then follows me to the toilet, tries to climb on my lap and inspects the toilet bowl. He stands with his paws on the seat to check I've flushed.

He then sits on the edge of the sink to watch my brush and wash my face before squawking loudly again at me to go to bed if I'm too slow.

He continues squawking frantically until I get in the bed and then climbs all over me to make sure I'm tucked in and gives me a kiss and cuddle. DH also gets a kiss and cuddle but for some reason doesn't require bathroom supervision.

He then jumps off the bed, has a drink and heads off to patrol the house for the night. He's very protective! He rocks up again around 4am, wakes DH for a cuddle and then sleeps on our feet until his brother arrives at 7am, who is responsible for waking the humans and ensuring they do their cat slave chores (breakfast...)

We used to think he wanted us to go to bed so he could cuddle in and then realised he was leaving every night! Then some foxes had a fight outside and he began growling and patrolling the house- I nearly cried when I realised he thought his job was to guard us and look after us!
