How much does your cat eat?

We recently got a rescue cat approx 11-12 months old. He is SO hungry all the time - we feed him 3 pouches of Felix doubly delicious as that’s what the foster lady had been doing. He devours these within literal seconds each time. He follows us around all the time tripping us up desperate for food. We did once early on give him an extra pouch and some more dry food but the next day he was sick which I put down to overeating?
is it Normal for cats to be that hungry / greedy?! And is the sick likely to be caused by over feeding or should I increase to 4 pouches a day?

Get the vet to check if he has hyperthyroidism.

My cat started off with suddenly being hungrey all the time but with weight loss and being sick.

Have you got insurance as if medication is required it is usually for life.

mycatsbestfriend · 23/09/2024 02:46

You could try him on a denser food for some meals, like appleaws, it is more expensive but I increased the cats dry food when I started them on it

caringcarer · 23/09/2024 05:42

I've got 2 cats. 1 large male half Maine Coon. He eats 1 1/2 pouches morning kibble snack at about 2pm and 1 1/2 pouches before I go to bed. My little female cat only eats 1/2 pouch morning plus kibble, kibble at 2pm and 1/2 pouch when I go to bed plus a bit more kibble. They both get 1/2 a chicken breast each on Sunday and sometimes if I roast a joint of beef or pork I cut them a good slice each. Tuna in springwater if they are off their food.

Bgfe · 23/09/2024 05:47

My large male cat is a few months older. From about 9 months when he was full grown he got 1/2 pouch of top quality wet plus 40g of top quality kibble - twice a day.

As PP said maybe try food with higher meat content. We use Meowing Heads and Scrumbles.

Wet is best for male cats but a bit of kibble helps with their teeth so we combine.

My female ragdoll eats 1 pouch a day with some biscuits. She has that split into 2 meals. She doesn't always eat the whole thing though. I got her when she was 4 and she's now 10 and has always eaten the same amount.

My dad's cat will only eat felix and goes through multiple pouches a day, yet is always hungry. She's 19. They once caught her opening the kitchen cupboard and chewing through a packet of cat food to help herself to what she wanted😂.

Galaxywhirl · 23/09/2024 06:32

The quality of food you are giving is low, Felix wouldn’t fill him up, not sure about the dry food you are feeding?

AnnaMagnani · 23/09/2024 06:43

I feed mine high quality food. They still rock up an hour before dinner time and one of them helpfully points out the food cupboard afterwards in hopes of a second helping.

Sickness can be caused by eating too fast. I use a slow feeder for one of mine for this reason.

susiedaisy1912 · 23/09/2024 06:44

My two eat the felix doubly delicious but the vet has told me it's not calorie dense so I need to top it up with good quality biscuits which I do. This seems to keep them satisfied.

Andtheworldwentwhite · 23/09/2024 07:05

My cat is 15. He has three pouches a day and I always put dried food down for him while I’m at work. But he doesn’t tend to touch that. He is a grazer food eater though and always has been. So he doesn’t ask for food all the time as there is normally some down on the floor all day.

Sunshineandrainbow · 23/09/2024 07:10

What dry food do you feed?
Make sure it's good quality. I use purizon from zooplus.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 07:14

Mine get a pouch of wet food each (split across two meals), two small handful of dry (another two meals), some dreamies when they come in for the night as well as some chicken or turkey off us at some point.

They supplement with whatever they catch outside.

AmberPanda · 23/09/2024 08:41

Ok thanks this is super helpful. I will look for some better quality food. I have been feeding Purina pro plan again just as that’s what he had in foster care so wanted to keep the same for first few weeks.

we give one handful of dry a day which he also gobbles straight down.

I’ll try better quality pouches and see if that helps. Thanks so much

We've had our 11 month rescue a couple of weeks. She was on 3 Whiskas in gravy pouches a day at her foster family. We're trying to wean her onto Untamed as it seems much more healthy and was recommended by friends. She currently has half Whiskas half untamed in the morning, the other half of those in the afternoon (never finishes all of it) and then a can of untamed at bedtime which is always gone by morning. I think we're just going to switch her next week to an untamed in the morning and one at bedtime. She was underweight when we got her but is noticeably less now. She has Purina One available at all times and gets through about a cup per day. Also has a couple of Webbox meat sticks.

I have a neutered 3 year old female, she is smaller than average sized. She'll eat 2 pouches/tins and some extra kibble if she is hungry.
She does pester us for food a lot though, I don't think she's actually hungry just a bit greedy (at her last vet check up vet said she was a healthy weight but to be careful she doesn't get any fatter!)
Assuming your cat is wormed regularly he's probably just a bit of a greedy guts. 3 pouches a day sounds about right

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/09/2024 10:18

We do four small meals here most days (unless there is no-one here to give his Lordship lunch, then he gets it all at breakfast) with two x 50g pouches of Sheba in gravy and Royal Canin biscuits over the course of the day. He won't always eat all the wet food. He gets half one of those chewy sticks most days, sometimes a "chicken yoghurt" and always a couple of Dreamies after his evening brushing.

The Sheba isn't the best but when he came from foster care he was on Whiskas which was rank so we tried various wet options. He really does prefer dry food and rejected most of it with disgust. The freezer full of Katkin was a particular low. He does drink though so I am less fussed - our previous cat would only ever drink from filthy puddles despite having access to fresh water in various locations at all times.

AEP123 · 23/09/2024 10:21

I feel my 6 month old cat a pouch of James Wellbeloved wet food in the morning, with a big scoop of dry food in another bowl.

Then he’ll have another pouch of wet in the evening, and another scoop of dry.

… occasionally he’ll treat himself by opening the kitchen cabinet by himself, climbing in and tearing his way through the bag and helping himself to all he likes 🥲🥲🥲

QuestionableMouse · 23/09/2024 10:21

Three cats. They get a pouch of Felix morning and evening and have access to dry food at all times.

ohthejoys21 · 23/09/2024 10:23

I've heard this before with cats on Felix. It's low meat content and not good for your cat. Try slowly mixing in a complete wet food with high meat content, and gradually ween off the Felix.

Roxbury · 23/09/2024 10:30

Ours have a pouch of whiskas each (specifically poultry in jelly - but God forbid if you get the 7+ that they won't touch the fussy buggers) in the morning and tea time plus free access to dry food to graze on throughout the day. One prefers biscuits and will eat more of those while the other finishes whatever wet food is left. They generally go through one bowl of biscuits a day between the two of them.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 23/09/2024 10:31

I have 2 cats, one is very much like yours and he will eat at least 3 pouches a day, plus leftovers from the other cat. Given the opportunity he would eat more, so I supplement the wet food with good quality dry biscuits. Some cats are just greedy, but it is worthwhile also ruling out worms or any medical conditions first.

JaceLancs · 23/09/2024 11:39

3-4 sachets a day
High quality biscuits on hand at all times
Finn is a very active young cat and burns it off - he’s slightly on the slender side according to the vet
He gets at least one lot of treats plus loves to lick food packaging (not a fan of cooked people food)

Galaxywhirl · 23/09/2024 06:32

The quality of food you are giving is low, Felix wouldn’t fill him up, not sure about the dry food you are feeding?

This is the problem he needs higher quality cat food. I feed my female main coon 1, 200 gram tin per day plus a handful of biscuits. I use animonda carny from zooplus it has a really high meat content unlike a lot of sachets.

Julianne65 · 23/09/2024 13:03

Our cat is like this and also with Felix Doubley Delicious. Maybe it really is THAT delicious. She's been checked over and is fine. We were feeding her 3 sachets and the vet said it was too much and we went down to 2 a day. She would eat it all day long if we let her. She cleans her bowl and sometimes tries to pick up the remaining scraps with her paw.

Julianne65 · 23/09/2024 13:05

Also, we tried better quality food. Untamed, she liked it for 2 weeks then when we took out a subscription she wouldn't touch it. Won't touch Canagan or Blink either.

KnittedCardi · 23/09/2024 13:29

Arthur has had anything up to six pouches a day, plus I keep his biscuit bowl topped up and available all day. He also supplements with a daily mouse, and will often get off cuts from raw chicken and the odd prawns. He eats less in the summer, more in the winter.

So the answer is, it depends.....

I feed pretty much on demand, as he is happy and healthy, and an outdoor active cat.
