When to euthanise? (Kidney disease)

My old cat (18) was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease a few months ago.

He’s on a renal diet and probiotics but the vet didn’t recommend any medication.

He’s lost lots of weight (used to be 5.5kg now around 3kg).

typical kidney disease symptoms including the weight loss, drinks loads etc.
His behaivoir has definitely changed, won’t sleep in his bed. A loss of some mobility etc.

However,he still sometimes likes a stroke/company and he purrs.

I know I have to make the decision to put him to sleep but I don’t know when the right time is,will it be obvious? Obviously I don’t want him to suffer. He is still happy ish. Don’t want to PTS to soon either.

I think a lot people expect their vets to raise it but in my experience they don’t.

we took our painfully thin cat to vet with lump expecting her to be put to sleep but vet said try painkillers first to see if they got her appetite back. Two/ three weeks later we rushed her even thinner struggling to breath because she had fluid on her lungs. It was horrific for both of us. I feel so guilty when I look at pictures of her now. We said she was doing ok and not suffering “yet” but pictures show a different story. She should have been euthanised at the first appt.

@aodirjjd oh that’s so sad. But again,we do what we think (or the vet thinks) is best at the time.

My boy is losing lots of weight and I don’t want a traumatic end for him. He isn’t going to get better. I could leave it for another month I guess but will be worrying about his deterioration.
I’ll see what the vet thinks as well.

Oh love it's awful isn't it? We had to let our beautiful DBoycat go with cancer and we were besides ourselves. It took me ages to reconcile it. But like your DCat he wasn't going to get better and he was crying with pain.

I look at it as the last act of love. X
