Cat has started weeing in house. Help!!!!

Had my rescue cat 6 years now. He's about 11 years old. Over the last few weeks he's started weeing in the living room and I have no idea why. He's an indoor cat. Has always used a tray absolutely fine. We moved 4 months ago and he's been fine using tray in new house. Haven't changed tray or litter or location of tray. Doesn't seem in pain or unwell. Eating and drinking as normal.
What do I do??? I don't want my house to stink of cat wee!! The only thing I can think of is there's a cat that comes in the garden and stares at him through the window. Could he be marking his territory??

Yes the cat staring at him will be causing him stress and unwanted house peeing is nearly always stress. Feliway diffuser, cystese capsules from amazing sprinkled in food and stop the cat looking through the window if it all possible. Even if you have to put cardboard on the window!

changedusernameforthis1 · 08/08/2024 23:12

It could be the other cat, but it could also be a uti. My cat had one and the only symptom was him peeing where he shouldn't. The vet said cats are great at masking pain and illness, so I'd get a check up booked just to make sure as it can cause kidney issues if left untreated.

StarDolphins · 08/08/2024 23:16

My cat did this when she had a urine inf but it could very easily be the other cat. My cat gets v stressed when our neighbours cat walks past. Simple solution urine solution kills the enzymes to stop any smell & I would get feliway plug in & shut the curtains.

Britishsummertime22 · 08/08/2024 23:20

I've booked a vet appointment and ordered some new pet remedy diffusers.
Don't really want to have the curtains closed all the time in the kitchen as it will make it so dark but I will if I have to.
I'm so pissed off if it is this other cat, it's such a bully and my cat has been crying when this cat just sits at the back door staring at him.

Get some puppy pads to put where the cat has been weeing (if he's picking the same spot), just to protect the carpets, get out there with the hose to get shot of the enemy cat!

CormorantStrikesBack · 09/08/2024 06:56

Get a water pistol and start squirting the other cat.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 09/08/2024 07:05

You don't need to close the curtains, just get some privacy film up so the light stills gets in but the cat can't see out - you can it from Amazon.

Britishsummertime22 · 09/08/2024 17:10

Workman came round today and I can smell the wee so he must have been able to too. It's so embarrassing. This is my first home and I feel like it's being ruined. I've got a water gun that I spray the other cat with but I've not seen him in weeks. He might be coming while I'm out at work all day.

I don't know if that'll help because its translucent so the cats will still be able to see each other.

It might make enough of a difference to work - if your cat is so stressed he's peeing everywhere it has to be worth a go, right?

Britishsummertime22 · 10/08/2024 08:22

I'm kind of hoping it's a UTI and he can be treated and it's stopped. I tried the simple solution stuff, doesn't seem to have done anything and he's been again in the same place. I'm worried now that his scent is there, there is nothing to stop him going there. I can't cope with having a house that stinks of cat wee.

OP posts:
sunsetsandboardwalks · 10/08/2024 09:01

Simple Solution is good at getting rid of the scent, but it won't stop the behaviour if it's caused by physical illness or stress.

You need to find out why he's peeing first - so once you've ruled out physical issues I'd look at stress and whether he's happy as an indoor cat.

I know you've had him a while but you could consider a catio or cat-proof fencing so he has some some space to explore (with the added benefit that other cats can't get to him).

Britishsummertime22 · 10/08/2024 09:06

I don't think simple solution has got rid of the scent. When I come down the stairs to the living room I'm greeted with the smell.
I literally feel so miserable.

Britishsummertime22 · 16/08/2024 19:57

So vet has treated him for a UTI and he is STILL weeing in the house. In the same place every time. I'm guessing now he recognises his own scent. What can I do to get him to stop?? I feel like I'm losing my mind. I can't live in a house that stinks of cat piss, I just can't do it.

VeryQuaintIrene · 16/08/2024 20:07

Nature's Miracle is an enzymatic cleaner that really does remove the smell to humans and to cats, in my experience

Britishsummertime22 · 16/08/2024 20:19

@VeryQuaintIrene okay I've ordered that. I honestly don't know what I'm going to do if he doesn't stop, I don't want to have to rehome him but I can't live like this.

Tin foil on the area he goes might break the habit. My boy cat has a tendency to wee on one end of the sofa unless there’s tin foil there. As long as the foil is there he goes in his tray.

KnackeredandWiser · 16/08/2024 20:47

We have this at the moment OP with our rescue boy. It seems to be a flea allergy we think. He suddenly starts scratching himself and then loses bladder control and pees/sprays everywhere. It looks like he's having a fit or a seizure although the vet says that isn't the case. He's been prescribed every flea treatment going but it seems to make no difference. It only ever happens during the summer months.

I would love to know if anyone has any advice.

Pashazade · 17/08/2024 07:36

Have you tried putting some dried food there, they tend not to pee where they eat. Also just cover the area with puppy pads, then at least you can throw them away.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 17/08/2024 07:49

No ones going to want him if he’s weeing in the house he’ll be stuck in a pen for ages/put to sleep.

If he’s had a uti they can get another really quickly so get him a vet appt again.
Take all dry food out of his diet.
Mix Cystease capsules into his breakfast. This stops the top layer of their bladder sloughing off under stress.
Clean the area with an enzyme cleaner. Bissell makes a spot carpet cleaner.

Did you get the window film for the back door? You can use white sticky back plastic too on doors

TenThousandSpoons · 17/08/2024 07:53

Can you put a litter tray in the spot he keeps using?

AquaFurball · 17/08/2024 08:09

Put litter trays in other areas of the house including where he has been peeing so he has somewhere he feels safe to go. Make sure he has boxes or igloo style beds in other rooms too so he has somewhere to hide.

If he doesn't have a UTI it's stress and you need to make sure he feels safe, 4 months in a new home and he's started peeing outside the litter tray is more likely something has upset him (other cat in garden) than UTI.

Privacy film will help because he can't make direct eye contact and that's how cats feel threatened not just seeing another cat.

Pet remedy spray used in a safe area for him away from windows where he can be calm will also help.

When using simple solution, make sure to use an old towel to soak up as much urine and dry the area first before applying it. It doesn't work if you are just putting in on top, you need to dry the area as thoroughly as possible first. If you are finding that isn't working, try Nature's Miracle, using it the same way.

Many years ago my male (outdoor) cat started peeing in house when bullied by local cat. I was advised to clean areas with diluted surgical spirit. The worse thing to do is get cross with the cat as this increases their stress. Hard I know! Took a few weeks but we got there, with patience.

Okay I can try that, does it damage the carpet? Thanks
