Cat has started weeing in house. Help!!!!

Had my rescue cat 6 years now. He's about 11 years old. Over the last few weeks he's started weeing in the living room and I have no idea why. He's an indoor cat. Has always used a tray absolutely fine. We moved 4 months ago and he's been fine using tray in new house. Haven't changed tray or litter or location of tray. Doesn't seem in pain or unwell. Eating and drinking as normal.
What do I do??? I don't want my house to stink of cat wee!! The only thing I can think of is there's a cat that comes in the garden and stares at him through the window. Could he be marking his territory??

Okay I can try that, does it damage the carpet? Thanks

It was a few years back, but as I recall, no.

As someone has suggested get puppy pads. Amazon sells them in packs of 100. i have a cat that often has diarrhea (and has been checked by the vet countless times) and likes to poop outside the litter box in one certain spot. I‘d go insane without those puppy pads.

Replace the carpet with lino. Restrict cat to a couple of rooms. Move cat to an outdoor run.

I will be slaughtered for this but I couldn't live with it and would have the cat rehomed or euthanised if an outdoor run wasn't feasible.

It could be the other cat, but it could also be a uti. My cat had one and the only symptom was him peeing where he shouldn't. The vet said cats are great at masking pain and illness, so I'd get a check up booked just to make sure as it can cause kidney issues if left untreated.

Did he eventually stop weeing in the house? He's had the treatment for a UTI and is still weeing in house.

Get a water pistol and start squirting the other cat.

I've been doing that. Haven't seen him in a while but I don't know if he hangs around while I'm at work.

Have you tried putting some dried food there, they tend not to pee where they eat. Also just cover the area with puppy pads, then at least you can throw them away.

Yeah, put dried food down. He just wees next to it.

Yeah, I just don't want puppy pads all over the house.

I don't think he would be able to be rehomed as someone has said, no one will want a cat that wees in the house. I may have to have him PTS as I can't live like this. It's making me feel so down.

They can get one uti after the other if they’re stressed. You need to get him vet checked & give him Cystease in his wet food.

Ive had a Bengal with stress induced uti and it’s a manageable condition.

He's found a threat (other cat), I thought that getting my boy neutered, he wouldn't be able to spray. Nope, he's been actively spraying in the garden and then the house, even on me! (He sprayed up my back in the middle of a thunderstorm). Just don’t take neutering to mean that they'll never spray. Mine was done at 5 months and he turns 16 this year!

Newuser75 · 19/08/2024 03:43

I'd try washing area with biological washing powder solution then dabbing on surgical spirit. Once dry either put tin foil down to break habit or a litter tray in that spot.
Make sure he has plenty of places to hide, cardboard boxes, high up places etc. also plenty of play, chase games.
I'd also consider letting him outside, ideally in a safe area as he has never been out before.

Close the curtain when you're not home and when you are, use a water pistol on the visitor to persuade it to move. It will get the message eventually.
Stress caused by another cat will do this - definitely did with ours. No idea why a neighbours cat suddenly started coming into our back gardens when they were a good few houses away with no linked access at all but he did. Fortunately they were in the process of moving house so the problem was resolved fairly quickly albeit expensively after our vet bills.

Britishsummertime22 · 19/08/2024 06:12

I'm not going to have him pts it's just really getting me down that I can't work out why he's stressed and doing this. I was just at the end of my tether cleaning up cat piss when I'm already having a really difficult time.

Funny how no one had a go at you for this suggestion but they have at me.

How long has puss been on treatment for the uti? What did the vet suggest?
Someone suggested peppermint essence on cat pee and it worked for us.
It is revolting and makes your house feel disgusting.

aodirjjd · 19/08/2024 06:34

I’d put a litter tray in house.you could put it in place he’s already weeing and then slowly move it somewhere better. If he’s going to wee in house I’d rather it was somewhere cleanable!

BiscuityBoyle · 19/08/2024 07:44

Is there any way you can make an outdoor run for him or give him some outdoor time?

Runninghappy · 19/08/2024 08:03

Bicarbonate of soda and vinegar remove the smell.

I leave the back door open sometimes and he has wandered out twice but normally stands at the doorway and decides not to go out.
