Is my vet taking the piss ? TW

I got a new kitten, now both my cats have worms. I treated them both but called the vet the next day because I'm worried about the little one, as she's been kind of exhausted and slow to move around since I brought her home. The receptionist said I should bring them both in, in case they need a stronger treatment. It's £100 just for a double consultation, and I don't know what treatment will cost on top of that. I'm tempted to just keep them home, treat again in 2 weeks and make sure the little one is getting lots of good food to get her strength up. What do you think

I just didn't expect someone to sell me a sick kitten, before I have a chance to get insurance

You didn't expect someone who posted a free advert and delivered the kitten to you and didn't allow you to see either of the parents or the conditions they were breeding in to sell you a sick kitten? You do realise people like you are exactly why this vile trade continues?

Yes

That’s good.

Are worms usually dangerous to cats ? The older one seems fine

I'm reading that it's uncommon, but I'm paranoid about it, I've just went through my bedroom cupboard and binned everything the cats can reach and I can't boil wash

Well that was completely pointless. Worms are transmitted via faeces, not via a cat sniffing an item in a cupboard. Also people cannot catch cat roundworms. Also roundworm eggs are not transmissible immediately - they need to mature for a couple of days. So unless there are 2 day old cat faeces lying around the house you have no need to worry.
Fleas is more likely but they are not harmful to people so no need to over react.

Wow, you really are getting flamed. Hope the kitten is okay and gets seen on Monday but think if it’s eating and drinking you’ll be fine to wait. Sorry you are getting such a hard time on here but MN can be a nasty place at times.

Not to adult cats unless they are elderly or carrying a particularly heavy burden. Adult cats are usually immune to worms

Did they both come from the same place?

All vets take the piss …. Don’t care what anyone else says - I haven’t met a vet that doesn’t think about the money first ..pet after.
I'll never have another pet once my little bundle of joy goes- I was ripped off by all vets …insurance costs … all a joke

I think you’re dishonest. No vet, being told on a Saturday that a 10 week old kitten was lethargic with a large tummy would advise you see them on Monday.

I agree...Any Vet worthy of the name would want to see a lethargic, pot bellied kitten ASAP.
The OOH {Out of hours for those who hate acronyms} charges for a Sunday consultation will be high compared to a Monday- but what price a kitten's life?

Yes, they can be if they're not treated. They can cause issues with dehydration, malnutrition and stomach upsets.

Except OP herself says the kitten is slow and lethargic, and has a worm infestation - that's an emergency even if it's eating and drinking.

Of all the times I’ve seen OP’s get “flamed”, this one is justified. The only nasty person is the one washing sheets at 90 degrees concerned they’ll get animal to human transmission of worms, instead of taking a very unwell kitten to an OOH vets because she doesn’t think it justifies the expense, after buying said kitten from an online advert and having it delivered to her house!

Maybe it's because they are passionate about unscrupulous breeding and stupid people who support it just because they want an instant pet without doing any research upsets them.

PrincessTeaSet · 02/06/2024 07:57

I would get yourself to pets at home today and get some panacur and some effective flea treatment. Ask for their advice and don't just get the cheapest. Weigh your kitten on your kitchen scales before you go.

As for vets fees yes they are obscene but it is not the fault of individual vets or staff who have no input into fees. You are paying for expertise not only whatever product you walk out with.

Before you need a vet any pet owner should research local vets and ask around, compare prices, opening hours etc, and choose one to register with. Don't wait until your pet is sick at the weekend to start phoning round. Lots of vets do a free check up for a new puppy or kitten - this is the ideal way to make sure they are covered for parasites.

Treating the kitten again today without vet advice could be fatal.

sharplettuce · 02/06/2024 08:10

I don't really know what you all mean either, I have never seen regulated kitten breeders unless they're pedigrees

I hate to pile on but the fact you even need to ask that question suggests you really should not be buying kittens from free adverts.

🤦‍♀️ all cats bloody moult unless you get a hairless one. It's part of having a fur coat.

It’s not nasty to point out that a lethargic animal with a swollen stomach needs veterinary treatment ASAP and that it’s utterly irresponsible not to find an emergency vet.

And that if you choose to get an animal, you can’t just say “bUt I dIdNt GeT iNsUrAnCe” and think it’s fine to leave them to it to avoid a vets consultation fee.

My dog was insured from the day we took him home. And as he was KC registered he also came with free insurance for the first few weeks. Because, you know, we found a reputable breeder who genuinely cares for her animals…

You don’t know what we mean when we say it wasn’t a good idea to buy a kitten from an online advert and have it delivered to your house?

It’s been explained in a multitude of ways. The fact is that you don’t care. It’s not that you don’t understand.

My Whippet ate a cat turd on a walk..it was lying in long grass, a tasty stool

She passed a live, thrashing Cat roundworm a few weeks later.
She is wormed routinely , but the vet said wormers only clear out the worms in the gut, if a viable egg is ingested a few days later, it's ''Game on''.

Poo eating is gross- She eats a well balanced diet, but can't seem to resist a cat turd.

Thankfully haven't seen a worm since in her poo.

Take the cat to the vet! Do not be so irresponsible!!

You should know that when you have a new arrival, you need to factor in vet bills. If you cannot afford it then why did you get another cat???

WitchyBits · 02/06/2024 08:15

I'm getting the impression you want to avoid huge expense while still saving the liens life. To weigh the kitten you need to put out in a pillow case and use a set of suitcase scales. Then go to a large chemist/pets at home and buy the PROPER wormer, not Johnson's.... go for panacur puppy and kitten paste and dispense it directly into the mouth. It's very very hard to over dose this stuff, it doesn't actually affect the cat as such, it prevents the worms from taking up nutrition, causing them to detach and die and pass through the poop. Panacur is what the vet will give you. Then if you do that today, you can get the cat booked in for its injections in a week when it's feeling better

Tahlullah · 02/06/2024 08:16

I don’t think you are being honest. There is no way that, if you told a vet that a 10 week old kitten was lethargic with a distended stomach that they would tell you to wait until Monday.

FFS if this is actually that you can’t afford it, please say what county you’re in as if you’re anywhere near me I’ll take the kitten to the vet for you!

Maybe because she's being either deliberately obtuse or she's in denial. This is justified, the kitten can't fight for itself to be seen, that's down to the OP who got a cat and now doesn't want to pay the extra costs of the vet visits.
