Does anyone have an implement to open the living room door to let the cat out without getting off the sofa?

As it says, our cat comes in and out 20 times a night and I have to get up to let them out.
Does anyone have a tool to enable me to open the door without leaving my sofa?
I don't want to have another cat flap.
TIA

If only there had been such a thing over the 15 or so years I spent being woken up multiple times a night to let my cats in through the sliding door in my bedroom.

Why not get a cat flap I hear you ask. There was one, but they then had to walk through the living room and hall to get to my bedroom - far too much effort for them.

My first cat started doing it, all the subsequent cats watched and thought it was what was done, so all four of them did it at various stages during the night.

We have the perfect solution. We don't shut the living room door. Low tech, low maintenance, low price.

I have door stops to keep doors open a bit, for this exact reason. Not great if there was to be a house fire though!

Toddlerteaplease · 04/05/2024 05:38

@JoanOgden that made me laugh. I had boundaries. Cheddar did not 😂

OpusGiemuJavlo · 04/05/2024 05:54

Why is the door shut?

And why on earth don't you want to use a cat flap when this is the obvious solution for when you want a door shut to everything except a cat

We only shut internal doors if we don't want the cat to go through them. Otherwise they are at least ajar at all times. Our cat has never in her life experienced a human getting up off the sofa or getting out of bed to open a door for her. A human might occasionally open an exterior door for her if she asks and they are passing anyway (the microchip-activated catflap doesn't always work). She doesn't make a fuss at shut doors presumably because she's never formed the idea that her human servants would open up doors regularly on demand.

Well I really didn't want my external sliding door open all night just to let my cats in and out.

Any internal doors which are shut would be to keep the heat in the room during winter.

Not all of us have the perfect cat as you seem to have!!!

Another cat who’s tall enough to open it for you even if you don’t want him to.

That won't work, a cat doesn't have an opposable thumb - you need a monkey.

Glittertwins · 04/05/2024 07:08

One of old cats used to able to open sliding doors, obviously didn't bother to close them. We just leave doors nominally ajar as they just either barge their way in or stretch up with their legs and lean/push into it.

sashh · 04/05/2024 07:15

It doesn't have to be a traditional cat flap, I've seen one that was basically a corner of the door so you could close it if you didn't want it permanently open.

Mine can open the door herself, she never closes it though.

Your cat sounds lacking between the ears. It's normal cat behaviour to want to access everywhere, so they scratch at doors until they're opened.

I beg to differ. Our old family cat, a Maine coon called Jack, was a bastard for opening doors 😂 I’d be in bed and he’d just let himself in. A monkey would work too though!

I simply don't shut any internal doors any more (apart from the bathroom when it's in use, I do have some boundaries).

I only have a lap cat if I'm on the toilet 😂 I can't set your boundaries or I don't get cuddles 😂

AnImaginaryCat · 04/05/2024 07:37

You could install automatic doors with a sensitive pressure mat. Or maybe a standard pressure mat and feed them lots of treats to create a chubster. (Win win situation!)

Even then, if they are a dick, they might wait just off the mat for you to get up and trigger the doors open. With them being a cat, the risk of that is quite high.

Pudmyboy · 04/05/2024 08:03

A friend had internal doors with multiple panes of glass in, and removed one at the base for cat access, bit like this

So door could be shut and cat had easy access, genius!

I read threads like this, in the same way that child free people must read posts by parents.
Aghast that you let these beings run your live, amazed that you ever chose to have them, and relieved and smug I escaped all this.

Here's the ideal combination.

Oh but it is so worth it, anyone with a cat will understand, those without won't and sadly will never have the bliss of loving a cat, even when they are being arseholes

SallyWD · 04/05/2024 08:47

We just leave the doors open a crack. Why do they have to be fully closed?

Onthegrid · 04/05/2024 08:53

My lounge is OK, once we are all in and on the sofa with a blanket, none of us wants to leave, my office on the other hand needs something but cat flaps won't be the solution. They have a flap to the outside and will use it but I have to listen to it click at least 10 times before they come in and if I am around then they expect to use the big flaps (AKA a human door)
I close the office door to keep the heat in (the only room I heat during the day) and also so I can concentrate, I wouldn't mind my 2 'assistants' being in the room if they settled down for a long nap, however, they don't. They rearrange things on the shelves, try to photocopy themselves or ask to be let out (usually 5 minutes after they come in). Or if they are outside the room they barge/scratch the door and cry. The only peace I get is if the sun is out and the bedroom door is open so they can sleep on my pillow!
I think I need to change the door to automatic like at the shops with a button.

She's not at all lacking between the ears. Totally the opposite. She just knows we would never open the sitting room door for her if she asks. If the door is shut we don't want her to be the other side of it. So if she wants to leave the room the last thing she'd do is draw attention to herself. She will find somewhere unexpected to lie in wait near the door, and when a human opens the door for their own purposes she will streak through like silent lightning, dash upstairs and get herself somewhere inaccessible so we can't drag her back downstairs till she's good and ready.

I’m considering cutting holes out the bottoms of my internal doors.

Mayflower282 · 04/05/2024 09:44

Just think about all the exercise you are getting 🙃

My ex did this on the door of our front room. The aperture was shaped just like a Tom and Jerry mousehole (but cat-sized).

My dad used to have a piece of string tied to the door knob, so he could pull it to open........and the extra long card board tube from the christmas foil so he could lean across and close it again.

A bit Heath Robinson, but those cats quickly worked out who their favourite human was when he retired!

I love this idea. Total genius. Did he invent any other useful stuff?

KatPurrson · 04/05/2024 10:01

A shut door is an affront to the Gods.
