Anyone have more than one female cat?

So I have found myself in a position where I have unexpectedly got kittens. I don’t want to say too much as it could be outing but they were dumped at less than 1 week old. I thought I’d keep a boy/2 boys/ maybe a boy and a girl but I have fallen in love with 2 girls. Homes are already sorted for the others and they’re only a few weeks old at the minute. I am being warned against keeping two females as they will fight. In my opinion it is the temperament of the cats that decide whether they get along or not rather than their sex.

I was wondering if anyone had success stories of keeping two female cats? We are fully prepared for the cost of cats, insurance, vets bills, food and have a family member that would take one cat if things went wrong. We also have a large house so space for separate litter trays (have currently bought 4) and feeding areas for each.

thanks!

Of course they will be spayed ASAP

We have two girls from the same litter, they are 11 years old now. They fight a bit but just hissing and claws, nothing major at all, have never injured each other and its over in moments. They don't love each other though, merely tolerate each other's existence.

I have no advice but wanted to thank you for taking the kittens after they had such an horrendous start

baklavagoddess · 02/05/2024 09:53

I've got 3 girls, I wouldn't say they love eachother but they exist along eachother fine, 2 of the girls are very clingy and get jealous over my attention so I think a lot of it is down to personality

bigdecisionaboutwork · 02/05/2024 09:53

I've 2 rescue sisters, per the poster above they don't love each other, they just tolerate each other. Barbara hisses at Margo if Margo is outside and comes back smelling differently, (they're mostly house cats but Margo explores a bit in summer) however Feliway has calmed that right down.

It’s quite hard to resist these faces (although they were like furry sausages when they came to me so a different kind of cute)

I have 3 females aka the idiot sisters. They get on really well most of the time with the occasional scrap.

Mine are very cuddly cats and generally sleep curled up together 😊

RhubarbCurd · 02/05/2024 09:56

We have two sisters - one hisses and bobs at other but nothing major but it's very much tolerate not love.

Pudmyboy · 02/05/2024 09:58

Oh that's adorable!
There is nothing cuter than a tiny kitten!😻

SoEmbarrassed2024 · 02/05/2024 09:58

To be fair I have a boy/girl pair, and they occasionally fight too, as have the boy/boy pairs we've had in the past

After all who doesn't occasionally disagree with those they live with!

Potentialmadcatlady · 02/05/2024 09:59

I have quite a few cats… two lots of sisters ( rescued as feral kittens) they are v bonded to each and v close. I also have boy/girl mix- also v bonded then some other girls who came on their own. The Bonded girls never fight with each other but will annoy the other girls but in a ‘your annoying me go away’ style not a ‘I want to kill you’ style.
The trick is to have plenty of resources for them so they never feel they have to compete for them- extra litter trays, extra beds, extra food bowls etc
Enjoy!!

cuckyplunt · 02/05/2024 10:00

If you leave them to it they will sort out a relationship of some sort. They are unlikely to love each other but they will be able to share the same space.

FemaleCats · 02/05/2024 10:00

Thanks everyone! We’ll keep thinking, the boys have been very much in demand compared to the girls and we thought that worked well as my husband and I both picked a favourite and they were the girls. All homes are good homes with people known to me that are experienced cat owners. I have created a list for socialisation and habituation to get kittens used to everything I can so hopefully they will be lovely and well rounded.

Barbara and Margo are the best names ever! 😻

@Potentialmadcatlady Thank you! Yep we already have 4 litter trays that I’ve put around the place to make sure we have sensible places to put them. We have 5 bedrooms (would like one cat free for guests so 4), 2 reception rooms, kitchen, utility, garage attached to house and only my husband and I at the minute. So hopefully enough space to exist together

I have 2 sisters. They loved each other as kittens but it went off like a switch. They mostly ignore each other now.

Sounds like a kitty palace! I saved up and got a cazami cat wheel- best bit of kit ever esp for indoor cats.. mine is currently 8years old and going strong. All of my lot use it when they get the zoomies…Can highly recommend them

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 02/05/2024 10:07

I have two unrelated females, the first came as an adult and the second as a kitten a couple of years later. They're not best friends, but they live happily alongside each other. Some hissing and the occasional bop on the boop if they're stuck in the house on rainy days, but they like playing together in the garden.

We will definitely get one! Is there a specific site you recommend to order from? I’ve seen a few Facebook pages but I wasn’t sure how legit they were

We’re still undecided on letting them outside. We live 5/6 houses from the main (30mph) road on one side. The other side is fields for hundreds of meters. We only have a small yard. We were going to play it by ear and see how they go once spayed, if they seem distressed at all they can go outside but I’d be devastated if anything happened to them

We have 3 female cats ( sisters) and they get on well together.
A few scraps initially to work out the pecking order but nothing too violent. In fact we often couldn’t tell if they were playing or fighting and was usually entertaining to watch !
They’re more chilled now and sleep together all curled up.

As far as I know there is only one cazami supplier in UK.. I wouldn’t go for a cheaper version as they are too small and can affect their backs plus I have heard they can jump the tracks. All nine of my lot use my wheel ( and the ones no longer with us) and not once in eight years have I had any problems or accidents so it was well worth the money ( about £480 I think) She has a larger wheel now too so the likes of bengals etc.
Its quite funny because mine sits in top hall and you can hear the cats com if bombing up the stairs when the get the zoomies to jump on it! They say it is silent/ it isn’t- mines like a low rubble noise but not enough to waken you

Potentialmadcatlady · 02/05/2024 10:15

I cat proofed my small garden/yard. Did it myself with netting, wasn’t hard and keeps everyone safe so they get the best of both worlds. They have a little Wendy house in yard ( was the kids) that they like to sit in and watch the flies

potatowine · 02/05/2024 10:18

We have made an outdoor enclosure for them with climbing space and toys. They enjoy spending time there watching the birds, hunting flies and sunbathing.
We don’t allow them to roam free because we have lots of garden birds and nests and we’re also quite close to a road. So it’s partly for their own safety.
