Anyone have more than one female cat?

So I have found myself in a position where I have unexpectedly got kittens. I don’t want to say too much as it could be outing but they were dumped at less than 1 week old. I thought I’d keep a boy/2 boys/ maybe a boy and a girl but I have fallen in love with 2 girls. Homes are already sorted for the others and they’re only a few weeks old at the minute. I am being warned against keeping two females as they will fight. In my opinion it is the temperament of the cats that decide whether they get along or not rather than their sex.

I was wondering if anyone had success stories of keeping two female cats? We are fully prepared for the cost of cats, insurance, vets bills, food and have a family member that would take one cat if things went wrong. We also have a large house so space for separate litter trays (have currently bought 4) and feeding areas for each.

thanks!

I have almost 2 year old sisters Nancy and Jess. We had them when they were 12 weeks old. They always slept together, cuddled together, groomed each other. Only ever "fought" when they were play fighting.

Then when they were around just under 18 months old we introduced 11 week old Alan. They spent the first couple of weeks hiding from him and slowly warmed to him. But since Alan arrived Nancy and Jess don't seem to be as close as they were. I don't know if it's because of Alan or if it's because they're that little bit older now.

I've had 2 females - adopted at different times and they got along okay - but the first two weeks were a lot of effort to get them to agree to it

I've got 2 unrelated ladies, one is about 7 now, the other 4-ish (would have to double check the jab records, it's only been 2 years, but seems like forever). The older treated the younger like a kitten for a while and still has a 'clip round the earhole' mentality. They have the odd ruck, but nothing mad. They sometimes sleep together, sometimes don't. Unless one of them goes in for trench warfare in the living room, they'll be fine.

Thanks for taking care of all of these babies. I wish you joy with your fluffsters.

Yes, our girls adore each other. Siblings, we think, they’re 2 1/2 now and inseparable. They get on well with the two boys we already had, too. Just the very occasional spat.

I have 2 female cats. They have the same mum but are from different litters. They do fight but it's never serious but also love a good snuggle together when they think nobody is watching. They also stand up for each other against other cats that are looking for a fight. One is quite a huffy girl and the other quite wilful but we love them to bits.

We had 3 unrelated females when I was growing up, I remember them tolerating each other occasionally sleeping together. We then adopted 2 sisters and they seemed to get on okay (although the remaining older cat spent a lot of time outside in huff at the newcomers she wasn't happy about it).

My mum has a bonded pair of female cats who were from the same litter. They don't seem to fight at all

I have rescue sisters and as kittens they slept curled together, now they are usually separate but often in the same room, they are friendly to each other but both hiss at any other cat. There is usually 1 event per week when the larger one chases the other and pins her down, that's it.

Thanks everyone for the lovely stories! They’re staying and if any issues we have a family member who would take one if needs be. We would of course try split territories (one based upstairs, one based downstairs for example) first

2 sisters, same litter. Were very close as kittens, but these days if one has got the prime spot first (which changes all the time) the other has to find a different room to be in. They have the odd spat and occasionally are very loving to each other. Typical teenagers really.

CornedBeef451 · 05/05/2024 09:41

I have 3 girls and 1 boy. None of them particularly like each other and there are some spats but nothing major.

Cat politics seem to be very complicated but the biggest female is definitely in charge. (Also the only one who will bite me for fun so the other cats are definitely right to treat her with respect, she once attacked a fox!)

Freeasabird76 · 05/05/2024 09:47

I have a mother cat and 2 female kittens, well they are 2 now,the kittens ignore each other, and the mother ignores one,but grooms other and playfights.

Chocolatebrownieyum · 05/05/2024 09:56

Having had two female sibling cats I honestly think you're always better off just having one cat. Cats are not social animals and rarely enjoy sharing their territory. Ours basically tolerated and ignored each other with the ocassional fight. If I were to get another I would get just one so it can have its own space.

I have a boy and two girls. One girl is 8 and the other is 2. There is no fighting, but also no snuggling up together. Shame!
There is, however, a kind of passive ‘who is top queen’ thing going on, so the older one gets treats first, eats the ‘baby’s’ food and sleeps in the baby’s spot when a new one has been chosen.
It’s fascinating and amusing to watch, and I’m relieved there are no fisticuffs.

We have 2 sisters since kittens now nearly age 5.

They get on fine, they will sleep next to each other fairly regularly. Biggest issue is one is greedy and will eat the other’s food so that one has a microchip food bowl but she’ll still manage to force herself into it on occasion. I do think they’re happier having each other though.
