Anyone's cat had this? Cheddar has had two doses and is so wobbly she can't walk. How long does it last?

A few hours.

My Mog has had it a couple of times before having surgery to have teeth out and when he broke his leg.

It's a relaxant, just gets them to chill out a bit.

Harry had one dose and we thought he'd had a stroke. He was walking round in circles and was quite distressed. We took him off it as it was so awful seeing him like it

I’ve no idea in cats but as an adult, it made me feel and act very drunk for quite a while after taking it. You do build a tolerance quite quickly though.

It makes my cat all wobbly and drunken for a few hours but she's only little. I'm giving her some tonight ahead of a blood test tomorrow morning. It's the only way they can take blood from her.

She's got a two week course, hopefully she'll get used to it! In children we build it up gradually over a couple of days. Now I can see why. I was very surprised when the vet said to give the full dose straight away!

She's already the most chilled out cat you could ever meet. She doesn't need to be any more relaxed. 🤣

The first time I had it as a human it felt as if my head was floating above my body. Not surprised your cat is a little out of it.

In humans, being that out of it would be a sign the dose is too big or that it just isn't going to suit you.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/04/2024 13:03

@AnnaMagnani yes. Her dose is 50mg. Which seems quite a lot for a tiny 3kg cat. When we give strapping teenagers 300mg

I had it once and didn't feel out of it. But I had the best nights sleep ever! I'll seee what she's like later and maybe reduce the dose.

I give grown adults 50mg!

Appreciate the doses aren't directly equivalent for cats to humans but some adults can't deal with 50mg.

But then I was amazed how big the dose of cat mirtazepine was, she turned into a hungry monster.

My cat is on 25mg twice daily, she weighs 5kg. She's been on it for a year, was very out of it at first but now just gets purry and happy. She also informs me if I forget to dose her, there's a particular wail she does only for medication.

50mg seems a biggish dose for a 3kg cat, how many times a day does she have it?

My elderly girl has 25mg gabapentin every day for arthritis.
My vet told me to split the tablet for a morning & evening dose as giving her the tablet in one go zonked her out.

I think there was more discomfort than she let on as she is definitely more active than before, more of a spring in her step.

My boy (who weighed about 8kg at the time) was put on 100mg (I think it was) twice a day for three days when he was very stressed as a result of being terrorised by a dog. It worked wonders to calm him down. He was so stressed before I gave it to him that he was hallucinating. The vet said they give high doses for short-term anxiety-related issues and smaller doses more long-term for pain.

She's still out of it 8 hours after this mornings dose. If she's still wobbly when she gets up. I think I'll halve the dose and see how she goes.

@MenopauseSucks I think she's been masking this for a while. But her second kitten hood has made it worse. Daft cat!

Vet's have advised halving the dose. I'll omit it completely tonight and see how she is overnigt. I'd rather give her metacam and feel
With any diarrhoea, If she gets it. As at least that goes in the litter tray.

Dcat seems completely impervious to it. I may need the horse pill version.

She's still in the basket where I put her last night. But she has changed position a couple of times. And responds to her name.

Is she a very old cat? I wonder if, like with older people, they don't metabolise some drugs so quickly so a small dose has a bugger, longer lasting effect? My 10yo 5kg boy had 50mg gabapentin for pain after teeth out and was relaxed but not spaced out

She's 12 or 13. And tiny.

She's been curled up in her usual position on my bed this morning. But has finally got up and walked to the sofa. Hopefully via the food bowl. It's the first time she's properly moved in 18 hours! I'm at work so having to watch her on the camera.
