Cat meowing early to go out

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/03/2024 08:24

The cat has recently started to wake up early and meow to be let out. How can I stop/change it?

She didn’t seem as bad as this last year when it got lighter.

Get up and let her out?
Get a catflap?
Leave a window open for her?
Any of these would be easier than trying to change her behaviour.
A photo of your cat might also help with opinions.

Get a sign that says no meowing before 9am at the weekends?

Maising · 16/03/2024 09:28

Mine are doing the same. One starts at 3am, then the other at 5am. The later one is 17, so I don't have the heart to throw them out together, but I'm exhausted. Cat flap not an option unfortunately.

I feel your pain.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 16/03/2024 09:34

Super soaker?

RandomMess · 16/03/2024 09:36

Ear plugs and ignore, they eventually learn.

Shinyandnew1 · 16/03/2024 09:39

If they are anything like mine, they’ll get louder and louder and then start scratching the carpet to get you to move.

Either just wake up or get a cat flap!

Readytoevolve · 16/03/2024 09:40

Leave a window open.
Or squirt with water until they learn!

I had this for months of broken sleep, the water spray solved it, with an open window!
Don’t judge me

I am getting up and letting her out! Cat flap no, I don’t want mice left lying around.

Ha! She’d hate me but I think it’s the only way. She might’ve done this last year but later. No not hungry.

The window might help actually…

I hate to say this - but they can bring mice in through windows too...

Yeah I know. But the window which is open she’d find impossible to get back in from so would just have to wait outside downstairs until I get up.

😂😂

Teaching cats to read… she probably could to be fair.

She’s a cat who I adopted (all above board) and she and her sister were locked out, all night sometimes, wonder if she remembers this? I used to have cat flaps but got rid of them.

We have a cat flap so ours goes out but then has to announce her re-entry every morning, sometime between 4 and 5am. In the 6 months she’s been here (adult rescue cat) she has elected to come back without waking me exactly three times.🙄

I would love to be able to trust her with a cat flap but she’s succeeded in bringing wood mice in from the garden through the back door, either when I’ve not noticed or when family visit/stay.

Not loving the idea of getting rid of wood mice in the house again.

Get a cat flap like this: https://uk.petsafe.net/products/manual-locking-cat-flaps

You can set it so the cat can get out, but can't get back in again.

Ooh this sounds perfect!

She will just have to wait outside but maybe she’ll make the connection that if she can’t get back in it’s better to wait til I’m up.

We have one of those cat flaps. They're ace.

minipie · 18/03/2024 19:05

Most cat flaps can be set to “out only” or “in only”

We shut our cat in the kitchen at night, with free access to cat flap. (Kitchen is large with lots of soft seating before anyone feels too sorry for her). We have had the odd mouse but at least they’re contained in the one room.

Seizethedog · 18/03/2024 19:18

Mine is the opposite. She has a cat flap with access from the kitchen . She chooses to go out at night but at 6 am will start screeching under our bedroom window to be fed. It drives me absolutely crazy. I can’t keep her in most of the time as she wants out just as we go to bed and I can’t get her to come back in. I often go down , lure her in and lock the cat flap . I don’t feed her until I get up. It’s an exhausting war.

catmomma67 · 18/03/2024 19:21

do you have a litter tray already? could you perhaps supply one for early morning toilet visits

WolfFoxHare · 18/03/2024 19:25

We have a cat flap so ours can go in and out whenever they please. One sleeps on the bed until it’s light then goes out. The other plays out most of the night but comes into our bedroom several times each night to let us know he’s come home - he yells until I acknowledge him with strokes. If he’s wet because it’s raining, he yells until I get up and dry him. I’m a well-trained human servant.

She has one ready to use. She has food/litter tray with access, she just sees the garden and daylight and wants to dash outside (for 30 mins/1 hour max) to make the most of it.
